I'll never understand why PoR gets such high acclaim. I know most of the SotN clones recycle material from previous games, but PoR's assets are around 70% reused from DoS unchanged. It's also not very well designed on the whole. I'd honestly place it below HoD in some respects, at least running through HoD with Maxim was fucking high-speed fun.

PoR has the best OST of the metroidvanias to me aside from maybe SotN and I like the characters and customization, and it ties with OoE for best final boss of the entire series because they both break the Dracula mold in exciting ways

I marathoned the entire series from NES all the way up last summer for the 30th anniversary and HoD was easily the biggest slog of the whole bunch even though I enjoyed it, the game becomes really REALLY cool when you incorporate speedrunning shit but playing it normally is a total drag

The final boss is okay, I guess. The bosses for most of the rest of the game kind of suck though, outside of Astarte's gimmick. I mean, they're not HoD bosses level shitty, but they are pretty uninteresting on the whole.
And no, I'm not saying HoD is good, the layered castle mechanic is beyond awful. But there is some fun to be had from Maxim mode, although I suppose the same can somewhat be said for Richter/Maria mode in HoD. I'd put both games at the very bottom of the list though, no amount of good extra modes can make up for the core game being shoddy.

Actually I found the dual character system a bit of a chore for the most part. Just having one character who can use good weapons and spells is just better in every way. Also, while the soul farming bullshit is done away with, mastering subweapons for Wind's quests arguably trumps it as the worst grind feature in the entire fucking series. Fuck that bullshit.
If there's one thing HoD did right, it's streamlining the collection bullshit to just the pointless furniture that doesn't affect core gameplay.

God, I remember Pre LoS CV threads. they were great. There used to be this trip-friend I talked to back then (I think his name was OSM) and I remember. the threads leading up to LoS were optimistic. but some Anons noticed LoS looked nothing like a CV games. we saw -one- screen shot that looked like it fit the CV bill. but the game comes out and the threads fell to hell. full of shit posting and none stop fighting. The trip friend mentioned that we had all sat around having good times talking about CV but there was nothing left to talk about and we all went our seprat ways thinking the series was dead for good.

I had everything in the Xbox360 version but the save corrupted somehow and I lost it all.
Had most of the items in the PS3 version too but I didn't care for that one as much due to it being much more janky on the PS3 compared to the 360.

Game really should have came out for the Wii U, would have been perfect with the tablet in two player mode.

PoR has a fantastic amount of content. While the castle itself is smaller, the areas are plentiful, and there is even that extra secret area full of old bosses and tough enemies. Combine this with stuff like seven playable characters, quests, and an online shop, and you had a pretty big game. The skill system also fixed the shitty "grind the same soul" aspect that was present in DoS.
