Grinding with a sense of progression helps me coming back to a game like that.

It works in some, but not all.

See Risk of Rain, unlocking more characters and more artifacts (Which have a chance of dropping during regular gameplay) is nice, considering the game itself is short.

It's a different game every time.

I spent a lot of hours on Isaac, just because I never knew just what I would wind up with next game. On the other hand, that can also be a bad thing, as the majority of items were trash and the game is literally designed around unavoidable damage.

if you're not 100% sure you can kill something: don't engage it.
always fight 1v1 if you can, this means making clever use of LoS, fighting in hallways, digging tunnels with wands so only one enemy can see you at a time

train your weapon stat until you're killing shit nicely
then swap to stats that make you not die
you want dodging even when you're a heavy armor dude
fighting is best leveled when you're at a high level as it gives more hp if you're high level but a couple of levels early on don't hurt at all
once you've got a few levels in armor/dodge go back to your weapon skills and get it to minimum delay

Should I use ID scrolls on other scrolls or on potions? I usually prioritise identifying scrolls until I find a teleport scroll and then do potions until I find healing potions

as long as you're below 5-7~ it's worth swapping to a different weapon skill if you found an INCREDIBLE weapon. crosstraining factors in too, if you find a rad weapon that your at a decent level with thanks to crosstraining than that might be worth swapping over to as well, but as a new player you often won't be able to make sounds decisions in this regard

id scrolls are best used on potions (i could be wrong about this but it's worked out for me so far)
sometimes it's worth buying harmful potions in stores because it'll instantly ID them

the thing about switching your combo constantly is that while it keeps the game fresh and interesting, you don't learn much.
you don't learn the extent of how strong your combo is at certain thresholds, you don't learn what exactly you can and cannot take on
i mean shit you can do whatever you want, and if you're not keeping things fun for yourself it's not worth playing in the first place, but if you're aiming to make progress then you're better off picking an easy combo and sticking with it for a good amount of time
