Shadow Dragon was also 9 years ago. 8-4 did a good job with Nier back in 2010, but then they did a shit job with Drakengard 3 in 2014, and Automata is full of questionable translations.
The old 8-4 that made competent localisations without needlessly rewriting everything is dead and gone. There's no reason to hold up one of their now massively outdated works as proof that they're not going to fuck this up like they did Awakening.

Echoes is fine. Unless you were expecting them to completely rehaul the game or something, which was a dumb thought to begin with, it's a faithful remake of Gaiden with a good amount of new mechanics and Quality of Life updates that make the game more bearable to play, and a bunch of lore and world building to flesh out the setting.
Whether or not you liked Gaiden to begin with is on you, and that will definitely affect how to perceive Echoes since it's more or less the same but they did the game justice with the remake. Of course if you didn't like Gaiden to begin with then yeah you probably won't like Echoes but it's a fine remake regardless.

yes pvp was broken as fuck in fates but thats why they should have learned from it so that they can improve on it instead of taking it out completely.
