I think that this is justifiable concept, which takes on account year of release. Therefore you would not complain about SMB1 being inferior to SMB3.

Sure SMB3 has more elements to enhance gameplay, but SMB1 was 3 years before SMB3. In 3 years, R&D teams manage to make huge progress with that hardware, though.

On the other hand SMB1 was technically a blast back then.
