Not about Samus or anything, more about female protagonist in general, it's not true their femininity is irrelevant unless you want to sex 'em up or have them as female power fantasy, for lack of a better word

Take the horror genre for example, a lot of iconic horror protagonists (not necessarily in gaming) benefit from their female status because it helps the audience connect with their struggles. Take Heather from SH, her emotional outbursts fit perfectly and you empathize with her, whereas James and Harry obtain that empathy more through having a set and understandable goal (find my daughter, find my wife)

Or take Alien and it's plethora of sex innuendos, making the xeno subtly more scary when he's facing Lambert and Ripley with it's hinted male dominance

Despite what the current narratives would say, society is extremely gynocentric, men and women alike easily empathize more with other women, be it for sex drive or simple instinctual species preservation

Heather definitely had some good characteristics that let you believe she was a teenager, but her anger expressed itself more in a masculine way, an anger that can lead to resolve, revenge, violence, pain, all the good and bad that comes with it.

Because that isn't the character that Other M showed. Samus in her early days was apparently a reckless shit head, meanwhile her later years she becomes someone that just follows orders and doesn't think, letting everyone walk over her. Fusion showed that she has strong convictions about what she believes in, that she was always willing to do the right thing and fuck anything that tells her otherwise, especially the GF.

Sakamoto couldn't even keep anything consistent, Samus or Adam. He had the chance to craft a cohesive universe, even hired a manga artist to tell Samus' history and then decided to ignore it for the most part. I can never take him seriously when he says that he wants Samus to be motherly, but can't even have her show a fraction of the emotion that Super and Fusion did, let alone Prime. Instead we got Melodrama bullshit with no real weight to it and a completely emotionally stunted individual, which isn't what the previous games lead us to believe.

I wish I could put into words everything I know about Other M and Samus' character and whatnot. To make a quick summary without trying to support any of these claims or make any attempt to convince you, Other M was necessary, creating a story which explored the conflict between her nature as a woman and her circumstances as a fighter was the natural and best route to take, and the reason Metroid is now a dead franchise which will never, ever be revived is because Other M ingraciously ploughed through these delicate subjects instead of treating them with the care they requires. Metroid is dead because there is no viable path forward for Metroid which doesn't involve fleshing out Samus' character and there is no way to flesh out Samus' character without fans throwing an Other M tantrum. And by the time people forget about Other M, people will have also forgotten about Metroid, so there is no longer a brand to cash in on anyway.

About the crying thing. The issue isn't that Zelda cried so much as it was that it was about the first thing they showed her doing. From a trailer standpoint, it was likely there to immediately endear her to the fanbase. Waifubait works and Nintendo damn well knows how to utilize it. But it could also create the impression that she's weak since first impressions make a big impact for many.

If she hadn't been shown crying in her first appearance and it was just something that you saw in-game, I doubt people would have made as big a deal out of it.

They had no significant improvements that they could make to the gameplay and we know how Nintendo hates to just rehash the same game over and over again with only little changes. It's sad that one game, where Zelda barely gets any kind of focus, but just mostly infers things can make her a pretty likable character, versus the game which is suppose to give Samus character, can't even do it because she barely talks, gives horrendous monologues and tries to be as impartial to her surroundings as possible.
