Play Baldur's Gate 1 and then 2 and it's expansion. It has better story, characters, writing, gameplay is more fun.
Pillars is just words after words and fedora tier writing.

If you never played a RTwP game before start with PoE first.
Baldur's Gate 1 is boring as fuck you can skip it.
Baldur's Gate 2 is great but you want to read a bit about what happen in the first game.

truth is, its simply a mediocre rpg with terrible gameplay and a story and world that doesn't quite make up for it, it's honestly among the worst games Bioware ever created.

It isn't, except maybe the first 4-5 levels when you have very few skils and a small party and a few encounters in the expansions on path of the damned difficulty. I've seen people play on normal and basically steamroll anything using the party with the AI activated and clicking a skill or two per combat.

I guess it's difficult if you're used to throwing cloudkills into the fog of war in BG2. PoE has less exploits and crazy OP classes/kits.

As someone who played BG1 and 2 for the first time just a few months ago -
Pillars of Eternity. Characters are better written, story's more interesting. BG1 and 2 characters are either nonexistent cutouts in BG1 or stereotypes like BG2.
