It's good.

The levels are the exact right length. The worlds all feed distinct and fun. The movement feels very solid, with almost no overtravel or floaty shit. The gayer jokes, like the Troupple Dance and shit, are very sparse and don't get in your face.

And the music is 10/10.

Glad I'm not the only one that doesn't really care for Risk of Rain, it's tedious to play at higher difficulties because everything has a bajillion hp and if you use the artifacts to mess with their health it messes the balance up something fierce.

Generally good level design. Not perfect but they actually understand for the most part what made old platformers good, not just hard for the sake of it.

It also uses all it's mechanics well, none of it feels like just a gimmick and the new things it adds to the mega man formula are all done well.

Shovel Knight takes inspiration from multiple older games instead of trying to be "the new x" or "the spiritual succesor to y". It takes a Megaman x Ninja Gaiden x Duck Tales with SMB3's structure, Megaman's bosses, Zelda 2's cities and charming, funny dialogue that doesn't rely on pop culture or memes to work.

It also breaks the limitation of NES games but without feeling too alien or without making it look like garbage like >>376535095, it's like it's designed to look like a NES game through rose-tinted glasses

Level design and tight gameplay also help. Great boss battles and a death system that isn't "3 deaths means game over" makes it challenging but not frustrating

Found this to be really important. A lot of these indie types are too eager to tell these poignant stories with big ideas and big themes, marred by also wanting to be absurdist goofball romps. Basically every faggot cartoonist that gets described as "CalArts" regardless of whether they studied at CalArts. Shovel Knight never goes too far in either direction, it's silly, but earnest, sweet, and most importantly, simple. Feels weird to praise a game like Shovel Knight for its storytelling.
