Uhh, no. You have no shadow of an idea what you're talking about. Workstation GPUs blow the fuck out of gaming GPUs.
>>
So what do we do now when AMD is truly finished?
>>
>>376528223
Convince others to buy AMD and hope that's enough to keep them afloat. It's been working so far. The 290x is probably the only product they've put out since ATi sold out that has actually been competitive, but that's mostly because they dumped tons of money into optimizing their driver (omega) which has had notoriously high CPU overhead.
>>
>815mm^2

Jesus Christ that's colossal. This thing is going to cost a retarded amount of money.
>>
i bought a titan black 5 years ago and it still serves me well.
>>
>>376526014
How is 1080 a meme?
>>
This is a $18000 server GPU. It will never be available to consumers. Stop shilling this to gamers.
>>
>>376526462
Oh yeah, so explain Microsoft monopoly on operational systems then. If you want to use a plethora of software, including the vast majority of games, you need Windows.

US anti trust laws are a joke.
>>
>>376529471
Glad I've never bought a Titan. Buying high end has always been a massive waste of money with how quickly new GPU gens jump in performance.
>>
>>376529585
it'll be available in consumer grade form in a couple years
>>
>>376526849
So that they can make games that will use it
>>
>>376529764

>>
>>376529958
no. This is purely designed for deep learning server workloads. It's shit for gaming.
>>
>>376529585
No shit Sherlock.
The point is that since they have a GV100 ready it won't be long till GV104 and GV102.
Consumer Pascal was launched 2 months after the $18000 server GPU.
>>
>>376527038
The whole reason why AMD exists is because Intel let them exist back in the day because of their technology exchange agreement. AMD wouldn't have been able to compete with Intel
and IBM with their own architecture and Intel needed a competitor to evade anti-trust laws. They regretted it later in 90s, but now it's pretty clear who is the better one out of Fairchild Semiconductor kids.
>>
>>376526086
this
>>
>>376530036
you still are obliged to use Windows if you want to use a lot of software, there's no competition if you want to play games and not use Windows

Actually they can just fine, the vast majority of PC vidya players don't even bother with $400 cards let alone Nvidia's $550+ monsters. Nor in the modern stagnating console driven market do they even really have a need to, most don't even have multiple 1080p/1200p/1600p displays let alone 4k+. If you're running on a 1080p screen then even at higher refresh a $300-400 card will easily max it out.

If AMD can consistently match/beat Nvidias x070 series and be cheaper, they don't need to care about not beating x080 or x080 Ti or Titan and can still make a ton of money at it.

Too bad their hardware division has been doing some bizarre mistakes for a while now. The ACX cooler in the 970/980 series ran noticeably hotter than any other custom cooler out there and actually had a fake heatpipe (seriously), the 1070/1080 series had self-combusting VRMs due to EVGA deciding to save a few cents by not using anything to cool them down and forcing them to offer a free thermal pad kit to existing owners, and their motherboard efforts have been largely unattractive compared to the existing competition.

GPUs take around four years to go from proposal to product. You have to guess from the start where the competitors products will end up. They clearly guessed low with Polaris 10, they probably expected Nvidia not to eat the early yield cost and make a 250mm2 range die, not a 300mm2 range die. The sheer jump in clock speeds Nvidia got was also probably not expected.

And that early yield cost did cost Nvidia badly, they didn't make profit off early GP104's and GP106's.

Honestly anyone could see how that was going to go. Nvidia archs are very driver reliant, code has to be made just so to work properly on their weird ass MIMD architecture. Nvidia employs teams of people to rewrite games shaders to work properly. After Maxwell came out they stopped rewriting shaders for Kepler, and performance plummeted on any new release. The general drivers also switched focus. Even now Kepler owners usually get the best performance from mid-2014 drivers.
>>
>>376530036
And all that happened to them was a slap on the wrist.

They're so emboldened right now by the Trump administration that they're releasing a version of Windows (which is almost certain to become the most popular distro among OEMs) which forces the Windows Store, Edge, and Bing and charges the user $50 if they want to run anything better.

In brighter news for AMD patches just landed in the Linux kernel which enable support for the new Ryzen+Vega SOC hardware which could indicate those will arrive sooner than anticipated, possibly June (4.12) or August (4.13) instead of the holiday season.
Vega is also due out very soon since the patches for it have been in for a while waiting for the next kernel release.

Like this isn't happening already. Intel and Nvidia already price their products like they have no competition.

Nvidia's stock closed increased by $18.35 per share in the last day. They closed at $121.29 per share. AMD closed at $10.79 per share. Think about that long and hard. Nvidia's stock went up by $18.35 just in the last day alone. That's the amount it increases by. AMD's stock is only valued at $10.79. AMD's stock is almost half of the $18.35 amount gained by Nvidia in a day.
