but Andre's smith of skills aren't even particularly exceptional. In DaS he can't even smith high-end stuff; you have to go to the giant in anor london for that. No one else refers to him as a great smith, and he doesn't seem to be famous. To me he just seems like a stereotypical Western village smith

I think I remember reading something that basically said that the fire just gets rekindled over and over again. Once the fire is linked, people can die, and everything reverts back but different things happen. So Ornstein is alive in Dark Souls 3 up until he leaves to Archdragon Peak. Gwyndolin is alive up until Aldrich eats him. But then again this whole thing is convoluted and I didn't pay too much attention the the lore or linking the fire. Or fan service, which is probably just the best explaination.
