Gen 1 had good story and good design, but many bugs. Gen 1 was great all thigns considering. It wasn't a competitive, balanced, or complex game. First and foremost it was about inventing a new genre of gameplay to let people experience being a Pokemon trainer. It accomplished that really well and was truly remarkable for its time with a little of everything that makes a game great.

Many of the later generations lost that magic. I'd even say Gen 2 lost it, and Gen 3 brought a little of it back, although it felt a bit empty at time. Over time the design of the game failed and it was no longer an immersive experience of being in the Pokemon world. The characters became boring, the story became pointless, the world design was hugely flawed, the Pokemon designs were too outlandish, the overall tone of the game changed to be more childish when it didn't need to be since it was already hitting a sweet spot of a children's game that appealed to adults with its sprinkle of adult themes such as gambling and crime.

To say that Gen 1 was bad because it had bugs or because of the special stat is asinine.

The problem is t hey are not evolving the game at all despite all this time. From the beginning people want to see Pokemon in the world doing things they can do like in the anime. They slowly rolled out showing us stuff like Machamp moving boxes and stuff but people wanted more. Sun and Moon was their big chance to really do that. Instead we got the same ol same ol in new paint.

This is something romhacks and RPGmaker Pokemon games get right. You can interact with Pokemon in the world. Hell for as cringy as Pokemon Zeta was it was almost 10/10 in this department.

X&Y definitely.
Platinum was great, but after beating it I kinda felt like I was growing out of the series. Then Black and White came out and blew me away, didn't really care for B2 and W2, which I know will get me crucified on /v/. X&Y just felt like a complete disappointment. The story was short, the mega evolutions felt pointless, and there was no post game whatsoever. ORAS was just the nail in the coffin for me.

The funny thing is I spent an entire summer breeding several boxes of perfect pokemon on X version and I never even used them.

Diamond and Pearl. My copy came with some kind of bug or something where each save took a single minute, and every "Saving lots of data..." took 3 and a half minutes.
