This is a dumb meme. RE4 castle section was the ground zero of the downfall. RE5 just took what followed up to eleven.
Here's the funny thing. RE4 chapters 1&2 = actual survival horror, very atmospheric. RE4 ch3 = way more action-oriented, some horror, still atmospheric. RE4 ch4 = same atmosphere as 3 but otherwise pure action. RE4 ch5 = military shooter with zombies. Kind of funny how that follows how the series' main entries went, isn't it?

I agree with you. I was actually a little disappointed the game didn't end when you left the house. The first time I've been disappointed at MORE gameplay. I still enjoyed the whole experience though.

RE5 was still eerie as shit with its third world setting and has a nice fun factor with a nice variety of upgradable weapons. It's nice if you wanted a little more of what RE4 is.
RE6 was a mess with its 4 story campaign that felt like a chore to finish, which you're limited to a certain set of weapons that you can't upgrade because of the shit skill system. The story itself felt like it belonged in a spin off game or one of those CG RE movies. The visuals are somehow of a downgrade compared to RE5, and the non tank controls feel bad, which actually feel good in REmake HD if you prefer it.

I would love to play RE5 again but I don't think I'm ever going to touch RE6 ever again.

Pretty much everything entailing the "cinematic AAA" nature of the game like the stupid camera panning, forced walking sections, QTEs up the ass, all that noise. Mechanically, the combat base is great but I didn't like most of the enemy types. J'avo are cool in a pure action context and I did like the weird motherfuckers that split in half but otherwise I think RE6's enemies were pretty dull, zombies in particular being painfully contrived in their presence as dealing with them just isn't satisfying at all. It's like beating up resilient ragdolls. This extends to most of the bosses as well - Ustanak stands out to me as fine but the rest were kind of tedious experiences, ESPECIALLY Simmons. But RE6 does come through with some brilliant moments like escaping the facility in China or finding tokens in the mansion as Jake, the snake setpiece with Chris or any section where you had to find McGuffins in winding passages while running away from the previously mentioned motherfuckers that split in half. And again, once you get a feel for how combat flows it's great in concept, I just wish it were applied to an all-around better game, not to mention explained better - RE6 does NOT play like a typical RE and it's painful to apply the same tactics one would in RE4/5. The game doesn't really do much to mitigate that, you're just expected to figure out that shooting everything isn't the answer this time.

Honestly the only thing I think 5 did well was the extras.

Re6 was a major disappoint in all fronts for me but most of all that. Re5 unlockables and extras felt like a natural progression and extension.
Re7 is alright it was pretty spooky. But enemy design really left be bored to tears. Honestly I would have enjoyed it more if the molded were just zombified humans instead. It might not be original but it would have been worth nostalgia points at least. The whole fetish for black goop spaghetti monsters that the RE team has really needs to die.

I will never understand how people say this. His was the worst BECAUSE it tried so hard to mix classic RE stylings in and failed spectacularly in the process. Ada's is successfully the closest to classic RE - the action focus is toned down a bit in hers and it actually has a few decent RE-esque puzzles. Still a far cry from the real thing but it did it better than Leon's which was billed as such. And Jake/Chris's at least somewhat succeed as straight action experiences. They aren't horror but they aren't bogged down by being BAD horror either.

I think I know what you're talking about and yeah, those are the best enemies in RE6. I can see being disillusioned with Chris's if you want an old RE experience but in my opinion RE6 is not old RE, it largely fails when it does try to be old RE, and Chris's ends up being the best by proxy of most closely adhering to what RE6 clearly wants to be, which is very much not old RE. Jake's and Ada's still have some of that compromise in focus, though I don't think they suffer as badly as Leon's and occasionally actually pull off the trick, if only occasionally. Still, RE6 is just a mess as a whole. Damn thing doesn't know what it wants to be so it tries to be everything.

I don't know why they would. RE7 didn't meet sales projections but it didn't flop either. It's been a modest success and probably a core representative of Capcom's 2017. I don't know why they'd pull the plug on support, especially when all the other DLC happened. Now, pulling back on it being free? That's a possibility. But outright cancelling it? I'm not quite that cynical.

I'm really tired of people who defend RE5 "b-because it's just like RE4!" because they don't see past the surface of the mechanics.

Yeah, it controls similarly, but that's where it ends. The enemies aren't balanced the way RE4's was (guns and flying parasites everywhere are really imbalanced).
The stage design has far less thought up into it, so the improvised tactics aren't nearly as rewarding.
Forced co-op is terrible as well. Ashley at least always did exactly as she was told, and if you're good enough she would never get hit. All damage taken in RE4 is the fault of the player, while the AI partner is a grade-A retard who needs constant babysitting.
The shift to action was just a little too high in comparison. Weakening the knife to near-useless, and the overabundance of ammo kills the game. There's no more strategic shots to conserve ammo. Why shoot the head+kick, or funnel a group into a small hallway for a shotgun blast when you can just mow everyone down with assault rifles?

RE7 is a better game than RE5. Hell, the Revelations games are better.
