How does one make a fair item-drop system?

Make it pseudo-random.
>>
>>376505715
What constitutes as "unfair" item drop system?
>>
>>376505715
I like FFXII's chain system.it would be pretty cool if fighting the same monster in a row in MH gave you better odds of the rare stuff
>>
xenoblade chronicles x destroy an appendage to get a certain part.

Everyone gets their own item drops instead of a single drop the party has to share.

I don't know why there are games that don't do this, except perhaps to inflate hours that players invest in a game by requiring them to run content a million times before they actually get the item they want.
>>
>>376505921
MH drops aren't that bad.
>from three to six carves depending on the monster
>break rewards
>quest rewards
>subquest rewards
Even the elusive 2-3% chance carves are actually 15%+ all things considered.
>>
>>376505768
all random numbers on a computer are pseudo-random

Make literally a billion drops that are all equally badass

When the gamers can seize control of the drop rates.
>>
>>376506118
He means "Dota 2 pseudo random".
With every failed drop, chance on the next attempt is slightly bumped, until a successful drop. To smooth up the short term chance and make it more in line with the nominal percentage.
>>
>>376505715
No such thing.

Item drops are meant to keep you playing and nothing else. It's just a matter of balancing the least amount of reward possible so you have to keep playing to get it with the least necessary to not discourage you.
>>
>>376506118
Not in a way that developers can shape the outcomes though.

It's funny that people like this don't realize they would be the first to be gassed if they got their "glorious" communism.

>>
>>376506068

Why not just make it so if someone on your friends list has it, it automatically goes into your inventory so you don't have to do the content at all.

Fucking retard.
>>
>>376508016
>defending infinite padding
And people are surprised why MMO's are fucking dead.
>>
>>376508484
Low drop rates isn't what killed MMOs. It's that theyre queue simulators where the only content worth doing is the current highest tier dungeon/raid. There's no world content anymore. They'd be better off if they just dropped the world entirely.
>>
>>376508484
MMOs have way more flaws than just "low drop rates" because the audience has changed. MMOs are designed to be timesinks because they originally made money the longer they kept you playing.

The problem comes from faggots probably like yourself who would play MMOs like they're single player games, people who see gear another player has and thinks they deserve it with little to no effort, and directing you around like Crazy Taxi so you don't get lost.

>I want to queue up by myself, run this single dungeon one time, and have everyone ELSE use their classes perfectly because I don't want to learn mine
>I have a life, how can you expect me to actually PLAY the GAME?

Blame the people who wanted rewards with 0 effort, instead of challenge it's repetition.
>>
>>376506310
This is the best possible system.
>>
>>376505921
>>376505768
That's nice but what about boss drops?
>>
>>376510397
What about them? If you can fight the boss repeatedly then use the same system, if you can only fight the boss once you make all their stuff a guaranteed drop. There's nothing to think about.
>>
>>376510656
Kinda defeats the point. What about overkill system, or maybe having to use/avoid specific attacks?
For example if the boss is a mage holding a spellbook you might want to burn or slash it to prevent some of his spells but then you won't be able to loot it.
>>
>>376505715
Monster Hunter series does a pretty good job for the most part.

everyone gets their out loot that is equally useful to anyone else as it is used to craft your equipment and no [biggus dickus sword +7] drops and goes to the dumbass who joined for one game, he has to actually make his own shit.

only shit thing is the charm system as it's near impossible to get ideal charms without spending HUNDREDS of hours and even then you might still not have the exact charm you want.
>>
More important question is how justified is the necessity to repeat same processes in order to advance in a game? I know it depends on what kind of a game it is but I guess in this case we're talking about (MMO)RPGs with some loot being rarer than the other.
>>
>>376513351
as much as it's still fun to do i suppose, if it starts feeling like a job the designer has failed.
>>
>>376512982
This pretty much. It always made the run feel useful and worst case scenario you still got to make other weapons / Armor just for the hell of it.

Much better than
>Roll 3 times
>Pass roll on a literally useless item
Now you wasted 30 minutes of your day doing something that's no longer fun.
>>
>>376513637
That is too vague and subjective.
>>
>>376513637
Depends on what fun means. In an old RO server there was a (female?) who would really sit there and farm these for us when we were offline:

http://ratemyserver.net/quest_db.php?type=10000&qid=10029

I could barely do this once, and she actually farmed 3 of these masks and said it was "fun". What constitutes as fun to some people must be borderline masochism.
>>
>>376514086
I've just decided to make that mask yesterday. Today I see a post about this very mask. Coincidence?
>>
>>376514305
Easiest mask to make that nobody else might use, so it's kind of babby's first special snowflake mask.
>>
>>376505848
Item has a 0.000001% chance to drop from a mob that has a 1% chance to appear
>>
>>376511268
So a conditional drop system? That works, Etrian Odyssey has that for the rare drops.
>>
>>376506156
>>376506174
kek
>>
Make them guaranteed

If you kill a skeleton, you get his fucking bones

If you kill a mammoth, you get its fucking tusks and fur, they dont just fucking disappear

If you dont kill the mammoth you dont get the fucking tusks

drop rates are stupid video game bullshit that should have died out a long time ago, its not the fucking lottery
