It's an argument that makes sense.
As a series goes on, it establishes a set of rules within itself and a quality standard it should adhere to.

Games that for all intents just use the visual themes and settings of a game series without the mechanics of it can be good games, but they won't be what you come to expect from the series.

Like, not sure if this is a good example, but I will use it, say I like megaman a lot, and I have the itch to play some megaman. Megaman soccer is probably not the game I would be looking to play, even if I do happen to like soccer and find the game is a good version of soccer (from what I recall though, megaman soccer was trash)

They dropped the world map and made it at that time probably the most linear FF and basically dropped the number of towns and cities to ~10 before to 2~3 and stuck with it ever since in some cases the didnt even change the culture of different towns in later FF -__-
Dont get me wrong of all modern FF games i like 10 the most (yes even more than bad solo mmorpg FF12) But at that time they lost something and never ever got it back and instead doubled down this was also the point where SE started with the sequels.
