The majority that have played past the first section end up liking the game.

Then again, you're on /v/ where most are either shitposting, basing their opinion off youtube vids or quit the game for dumb reasons. I remember some anon here quit the game because he couldn't handle fighting the mimics.

What's the appeal?

It's like System Shock except the level design is even more open. Many ways to navigate and proceed through the game like in good old Deus Ex. I can't say the combat will appeal to everyone but I love it. You have to make the most of a limited set of weapons.

This. I liked RE7 but the more I play Prey, the worse RE7 seems to be in comparison.

Some use immersive sim to describe games like Deus Ex, System Shock or Dishonored

It creates a sense of urgency, if a game has a side quest with some great imminent danger, but you can just linger with no consequence, it feels dumb as fuck. Many games are guilty of this, like Witcher 3

I'm confused. I thought the new game was Prey 2?

but they didnt.

It started out as a new IP (which it kinda is) while another team worked on Dis2. They just used the name probably because it sounded cool, plus Bethesda made them use it.

System Shock isn't like Deus Ex at all despite how it was made by the same people, DX is a RPG/FPS hybrid, while SS1 was a shooter that was quite a space dungeon crawler, but there's no stat progression in SS like you do in DX, and no choices in getting upgrades for you characters (augs), it's rather a you get modules and you're getting stronger all the time, no need to specialize. System Shock 2 that was made by Irrational who had no involvement in SS1 was more similar due to its stats and flirting with the RPG genre.

Did you really play those games?

More complex games means there would be more to have to render in the game. In Prey you can drag any item you want wherever - you're encouraged to make stacks and then recycle them with a grenade. If you did that with an in game mirror you would absolutely annhilate the frame rate

The answer is different depending on the game (older games like >>376510854 actually have a second room with a clone character also bound to your controls)

>>376504671
Whats sorta killing it for me is that everything feels the same throughout.

No zone really makes you go wow, it's just another part of the space station with virtually no difference in one place to another. In those areas all you do is pick up the same kind of items and fight the same kind of enemies.

They give you pretty much every weapon you'll use in the first half an hour, meaning things get old fucking quick. The gunplay was satisfying at first but quickly dies off after you've killed your hundredth mimic.

Mimics are retarded, halfway into the game they don't hide any more. You see them run past THEN turn into an object.

I really want to love this game, I do. But it's just boring.
>>
>>376512705

You don't know shit about shaders.
A shader is a collection of material that reflect light back to the engine to render.
Every object in the room has a shader.
A shader is not a light source or an encompassing rendering thing like you think it is.

Mirror double the amount of things you have to process and render.

There is a reason why you never see mirror house in game because it create infinite reflection that put infinite strain on the engine

All old game with mirror are done with gimmick work around and not actual real life physic.

Yes they're applied to objects.
You don't even have to render everything if you don't want to, you could only render 1/4th of pixels and approximate the rest and you'd still have a functioning mirror.
There's no excuse today for a game to run or look like shit especially a AAA game.
All these shit excuses are just that excuses. They don't put mirrors in because they think they can get away without optimization or being actually creative.

It's almost like graphics being "good" or "bad" is something that morons say to express their basic opinions and aren't useful when talking objectively about technical abilities.

It's almost like there is a give and take between things like the quality of models/textures/bumpmaps/shadows/particles as a result of memory and cycle management being a zero-sum game.

You can climb all kinds of things in this game, why wouldn't you be able to climb that window? It ain't nitpicking, it's developers not thinking this through.

It's probably hard to implement a good climbing system that allows you to get over those spots with broken windows but hey fucking Half-Life allowed you to do that.

Yes, but it doesn't make sense given how "climby" the game is, and back in 1998 there was this game that allowed you to break windows and crouch jump inside rooms, it's a possibility they missed, it would have been better if they allowed you to also enter that way, after completely breaking the window.

I mean isn't the game about doing things in all different ways? Well you missed an obvious way to get inside that room.

You can do an entire stealth run, and there are multiple stealth boosting abilities like reduced sound while moving to the point where you cant be detected basically as long as your crouch, plus the mimicry ability

There are going to be people who accuse OP, me, and anyone else who says good things about the game of being shills. But what he’s saying is true. Prey seriously is a throwback to the SS2 days. I feel like I’m playing a modern version of something from the PC golden age (SS2, Thief 2, Deus Ex) I’m just constantly impressed by it.
>>

>more complicated than BioShock
>more simple than System Shock.

This is simply impossible anon. Both System Shocks had objectively less complexity than BioShock 1.

System Shock 1
>variety of ammo to use against enemies of different types
>no passive upgrades
>no weapon upgrades
>no research
>no crafting

Any customization in SS1 was done through inventory management and turning powers on/off.

System Shock 2
>variety of ammo to use against enemies of different types
>16 OS Upgrades (unlockable passives), 10 implants (equipable passives). Total of 26.
>2 upgrades to each weapon, but all of them are just generic gun stat changes (more damage, less recoil, larger magazine, etc)
>research done through putting chemicals in a machine and watching a loading bar. Just gives damage bonuses and allows you to use 3 late-game, very niche items.
>no crafting

BioShock
>variety of ammo to use against enemies of different types
>58 gene tonics (passive upgrades). 31 unique ones if you eliminate upgrades to existing ones.
>2 upgrades to each weapon, some of which change functionality (immunity to your own grenades, changing pump action to semi-auto, ability to recover crossbow bolts)
>research done through Dead-Rising style camera minigame. Unlocks changes to enemy mechanics, like their grenades failing, or the ability to predict their teleports.
>can craft special ammo, gene tonics, and consumables

I love SS1 and SS2. But to say that BioShock is simplified is just silly. The only thing it lacks is inventory management.
>>

It was damage control but he did play through it a second time.

I actually loved the game, and I am very glad I bought it.
I played through with only human abilities, unlocked them all, upgraded all weapons, found all emails, transcribes and people (which you dont need to actually find all 100% of these things, about 90% is ok). I want to play it again, but playing a game like that back to back, well it loses it's impact if you can remember every room and where the enemies are.
I'm playing HZD now, then GR2, then I will be going back to PREY for the only alien mod playthrough.

One issue with the game is that at late game the difficulty drop is too high, it's virtually god mode. I manage to use combat focus, sneak attack a nightmare with a shotgun, gloo it and 2 more shotgun blasts and it's dead. the hardest enemy in the game Killed in 10secs.

Might have to try nightmare no needles run eventually

the endings are different depending on what you chose and what mods you installed, so I cant say what happened but in my ending, I was empathetic.
There is also a optional sidequest in the bridge to blow up a ship that may have typhon on it, I didn't blow it up as I was going for a no kill playthrough. But if I did maybe the ending might be different
Because, my assumption is As alex says in the end, these are morgans memories. so possibly, what you did is what happens to morgan

What i want to know is that after opening alexes bunker, morgans last transcribe to himself says that he has hid a different nullwave that will kill the typhon on a data tower by the scary chair. the nullwave alex gives you is to incapacitate them, So where is his fabrication plans for the kill nullwave, and october, the operator he was talking to in the transcribe

Because I was talking about RPG mechanics like passive upgrades and crafting. Psionics are active gameplay mechanics like guns or platforming. If we start throwing in stuff like that, then even Call of Duty becomes "complex" because of the variety of guns.

I would have included Plasmids in BioShock if we were talking about those too. Not like System Shock 2 has an advantage there either.
Particularly since Psionics weren't a very fun way to play the game

>>376521342
>SS1 has passive character upgrades called modules you faggot
No, it didn't. Modules were from SS2. SS1 had upgrades you could turn on and off at the expense of power. Which I said in my original post.
As I said above, if we're including number of guns as a sign of "complex" game mechanics, then CoD would be more complex than all. And Borderlands would be the the most complex game of all time.

>Oh yeah, taking a picture 3 times or so making you do +10% damage to the enemy, what a deep mechanic.
You complain that I simplify SS, but say this?
Did you even play BioShock? That's not how it worked. You'd need way more than 3 photos, and the photos were rated on level of action, number of enemies, and composition.
You got new gene tonics, looting possibilities, and sabotage to those enemy types. And the damage bonus was substantial. Way more than 10%. You could even take it further with tonics.

in alexes bunker. you need that last transcribe and the 6 in his apartment, plus the vids for the dear future self achievement.
I thought the scary chair would be the nueromod chair near the sim lab, but you cant get back there once the apex typhon attacks.
But also, on top of the data tower by that chair is a briefcase with a disrupter gun, neuromods and a note, which I had already picked up. I also remember reading an email to alex about someone finding it there and alex saying to leave it. so possibly alexes nullwave, is the nullwave, that he took from the briefcase. idk gonna have to wait until my next playthrough to get it again

idk, when I got to december, january killed him instantly. maybe if you killed january first, you can get to speak to december. But you can follow decembers quest and leave via alexes escape pod, it just goes to an end game screen like if you died. more of an easter egg.
I didnt try leave via the pod when the apex typhon attacked though, but when you get near it, january says dont be a pussy, finish the job.

No, I think Raiden means that he is familiar with MGS1 events because he played those through via simulation. Raiden can't have played the tanker part because nobody actually knows what happened on the tanker.
>>
>>376525041
But why does he say different things about having simulation training depending on whether player played through tanker or now?

not that it was hard just that i stopped having to be sneaky or heal myself at all.

Yeah, I just listened to the audio log, I had it but had it mixed with the one you get from Alex's body and forgot to listen to it. And yeah, the item he left on top of the shelf are the ones found by the spy Alex sent, he probably went there by himself and stole the nullwave thing.

well thats good, because I spent an hour at the end of the game trying to go to every area that i could access. I couldn't get outside either, despite the cargo bay being the only airlock open, i could not get to it at all.
January says that scanning the apex typhon would bring you suffering. So I was assuming if you got outside and was able to scan it, it may have given you a secret power.
You can scan the tendrils though, they dont give you anything.

>>376525141
Ah okay, you are right, I completely forgot about how it went so I had to google.
Of course I have no definite proof, but I still think we didn't do the VR version, because according to the official story it was Snake's fault that the tanker sank, so I doubt the VR version would be left as it was because it clearly showed it was sunk by the Ray.

no that is the thing, you cant, they don't limit the mats you can collect and recycle, but to make nueromods, you need the plans, which you cant get to for a while, and you need the aliens to loot, which are not much until later in the game.
Also you cant get the recycler plans for quite a while too so you cant start effectively jew hoarding the other mats for ages because you dont have the recyclers.

the sinking of the tanker was planed by the patriots, specifically to create the oil spill so they could then create big shell for arsenal gear and GW,, but actually for the SSS.
Snake turning up on the tanker was completely random, it was not part of the plan at all.
same with him on the big shell.
iirc, raiden does say he did the tanker in a training sim, VR, but the tanker section is not a simulation all.

>>376526365
yeah I remember where they are, i cant remember if you can get into fabrication so soon, but still, its the exotic mats and other mats you need the recycler for that limits you being super OP so early on.

Try playing System Shock 1 again. You get shit like better shields, different levels of environmental protection and the mini-jetpacks that give you extra mobility and movement upgrades in SS1, those are pretty much unlockable passive extra abilities/equipment that you get and you left out for some reason.

Also SS2 had gear and a research system that you carefully omitted. Where's the comparison between game geatures of SS1/2 and Bioshock and Deus Ex, that's would be helpful now.

Actually I think it looks like a nice game. Seriously interested in playing it. However, $ 60...

We've just become older. Higher standards because higher responsibilities. I may be a bit sceptical towards it but that's already much better than what I feel towards other games.

You simply don't see us complaining about other games enough because they're sooo beneath us they might as well not exist. So you think we're being unreasonably critical towards this while we're actually carefully optimistic ... in our own ways.

Right now I can almost asure that I will have played this game sometime in my life. [/blog]

Not that person but it really does look and feel like system shock 2. If it were called System Shock 3 I probably wouldn't question anything besides the plot being stand alone. From a gameplay standpoint everything is intact without being watered down like it was in Bioshock.

Bioshock 2 is one of my favorite games of all time, but it may be harder to return to since Prey just does the whole Shock thing better.

I really like the game. It feels like I am nearing the end, with Alex wanting me to check some shit on his computer, so I am currently doing all open sidequests.

Also, that damn cook was really spooky with all the strange shit he was saying on the intercom, and then he just dies even if you disarm the recycler charge wtf

Now this is shitposting
>>
It just looks so fucking BORING.
I'm usually into this kind of game but everything about it looks so generic, the weapon designs, the boring uninspired aliens, the layout and art style of the station, if you showed me any one screenshot from the game it would take me a few moments to figure out what it was from.
It has no identity of its own, no mechanics that set it apart from anything else, it's like they rendered down all the popular elements from other games and then turned it into a big grey blob of amorphous boringness.
>>
>>376544558
What is shitposting in what I said?
Really, I'm mad about how AAA video games are all about OPEN WORLD and doing stupid stuff for "FUN"

That's what really kills it for me too, the weapons are lackluster and the enemies have no variety. This game could have been special, but it just misses the mark.

Actually when I first walked in, I had the suit chip that makes you immune to recycler charges equipped, so the only thing he managed to do was blow himself up while I just stood there and looked stupid.
On another note, the mimics seems to have some trouble with realizing what gravity is...

>non-Shocklike story that is based on trying to teach aliens empathy
>neuromods feel more like bioshock plasmids than ss2 cybernetic module upgrades/ss1 hardware
>hacking minigame feels like a time waster compared to the ss1 puzzles

i don't know man, i just don't see it. the whole thing seems more like a console shooter that was ported to PC to me, and as much as i want it to be a system shock successor, it just doesn't do it for me.

Wrong. Try actually playing the game

>You can go whatever you want in every section of the station, not matter your progression

Wrong. 1/3 of the decks are available at the beginning.

Also open world means diluted content and not crafted which is not the case of prey.

That's more than double what you're claiming and that's not even all of them.

I had 4 turrets there, and enough cargo to block sight between the humans and the ayyylmaos. I also stacked 3 more of the flat cargo thingies on top of the big cargo thing in the middle of the pic, then opened the door, quickly jumped onto one of the cargo things and use leverage to throw the flat cargos onto the aliums, it was over very fast.

i played the demo, and a bit of the release version on a friend's pc who owns it, don't give me that "you have to beat the entire game twice to formulate an opinion on it, you haven't played it" rhetoric

Stop copy-pasting /v/ bullshit, and the story has nothing to do with that, all you've managed to do is spoiling yourself the ending, which has nothing to do with the story told in 99.9% of the game.

Open World denotes Skyrim, Rockstar Games, Assassin's Creed, Breath of the Wild etc. A giant explorable game map where you can fuck off where ever you want to an explore.

Open Level Design is Arkane's Prey, Thief, Dishonored, and Hitman. You're given objectives that can be solved multiple ways and it's up to the player's choice how they want to tackle them.

Learn the difference.
