She pretty much kicked the protagonist out of the series and made everything about herself and her new team. To make it even worse, her team has some of the worst designs in the whole cast.

Japan is obsessed with her, she wins every popularity poll, writers have had to change canon to make her actions the most important, and the one game released without her in it bombed.

Mario has a fuck ton of characters and nobody complains about that. The reason is simply because said characters don't interfere with the core gameplay, and I think that's really where Sonic went wrong in that respect. The other problem was how the characters were executed. Even characters like Shadow can be written well if given to the right person. Sonic Team is clearly not that person.

But to pinpoint where it started to go wrong, let's review: Tails was a dumb but ultimately harmless sidekick that got some cool gameplay in Sonic 3. Knuckles was a misunderstood antagonist who turned out to be an okay guy. You later got to play as him with some slightly altered level routes and his own little side story. Amy was a simple damsel in distress, and Metal Sonic was a cool doppelganger. The Chaotix were part of their own thing, and never impacted the overall series until Heroes where they were sadly butchered. (Charmy especially. Jesus christ.)

I think the point where it really went downhill in terms of superfluous characters was Big the Cat. He absolutely had no reason to exist. He didn't impact the plot of the game, he didn't even look like he belonged in a Sonic game, and yet, there he was, being shoved down your throat anyway. Gamma was actually legit and deserved to be a in a better game. Then you have characters like Shadow, who COULD have been interesting if given to the right creative team, but then you have Rouge. Rouge served absolutely no purpose beyond being a million young boy's sexual awakening.

From there, it's a mixed bag, but ultimately the majority of new characters were just introduced for the sake of adding something new. Which is also indicative of Sonic Team's "throw everything at the wall and see what sticks" approach to game design that's still prevalent to this day.

tl;dr the answer is Big the Cat.
