The physics based engine is cool but unfortunately kicking usually the only way you get to interact with it. There are some really cool parts though like breaking floorboards under enemies' feet and some of the magic.

lmao it's so fucked, espcially near the endgame when you're in the necromancer lair and beyond, where you cannot engage enemies like normal since they'll one shot you and you have to play really indirectly and abuse anything that puts enemies in a ragdoll state. It makes the game pretty interesting, but it's overall a worse experience-- stick to normal or hard.

I think a Dark Messiah made today would have more of those awesome physics set-pieces such as the robe bridges, floorboards, that cliff-side house that collapses, and shelf supports you can break to make crates fall. But as is I think the game explores it pretty decently. You have your power attacks, your kicks, and there are plenty of objects to toss around in the levels. Now only two spells really deal with knockback: Telekinesis (importantly the adrenaline form), and Ice, so that's a missed opportunity but I feel there's still enough going on in the player's toolset and the level design to make the game a chiefly physics based brawler with plenty of room for experimentation and fun combat encounters.
