The enemy design is boring and unfrightening, the combat lacks punch, and the story is shallow in both execution and premise. I don't think it's the sci-fi setting in itself but rather that this game has a very bland one.

If you compare it to Dead Space, SS or Bioshock they had great atmosphere, felt lived in and gritty. This just looks like a brand new car. Hell, even compare it to the old Prey or the latest Doom, other sci-fi games have so much more personality than this.

While I might be inclined to agree about the execution being a bit poor - what makes you say that the premise is shallow? Personally I find the theme of human empathy and the predatory lack thereof an interesting and deep thread throughout the games story. Supposed "boss" Nightmare is much easier to kill than technopath or telepath - that kinda sucks.
Game has multiple endings that take in consideration how you treated living humans in the game, or how much alien stuff you put inside yourself.
Exploration gives you more story, more items to play with.

eh, i admit it helped pave way in that aspect. But going back to it now, it is somewhat limiting and not as free form as people make it out to be. It is more like thief in how its structured desu (not as a flowing experience, more just go to a mission and then enter it in one of several ways etc). The way prey is structured I think is much more engaging for multiple playthroughs with how you can use different tools that you find at different areas etc first/ challenging yourself to finish without using certain things (eg goo gun), reminiscent of metroid.

Finished it yesterday, enjoyed it a lot. Only two main issues I have are that the music cues are kinda bugged/obnoxious (one mimic walking around a floor above you that at this stage in the game poses zero threat to you? Better have the same scary stinger badly loop for the entire time you're in this room!) and that, if you build your character and equipment right, you can go from vulnerable to laughably overpowered roughly halfway through the game.

By about hour 12 I had the maxed out version of bullet time that let me not only move at normal speed but also use no stamina and gain I think a 160% damage bonus throughout its duration. That shit lasts 15 seconds. Combine it with the Security skill I also maxed out which I think gave me an additional 160% damage on traditional weapons, and the upgrades I put into the shotgun, and there wasn't a single enemy that could even scratch me (including the Nightmare that's supposed to be this nigh unstoppable creature that's exclusively hunting you through the station). To add insult to injury I also had the abilities that let me either convert a robotic enemy to my side for 90 seconds, and/or a biological enemy for 60 seconds. The cooldown for both is only about 10 seconds so you can just sit in a corner and spam that shit and watch entire rooms turn on each other. An upgrade chip also let me regen psy power in coral so yeah, it was infinite.

I want you to imagine the guy on the cover casually walking around the space station when a horde of dark phantom aliens come around the corner in an ambush. From a spectators perspective that guy would go from casual stroll mode to whipping a wrench out of fucking nowhere and then somehow walking at 1000x normal animation speed while flinging his wrench around faster than you can blink and all the phantoms are suddenly a fine paste.
