Sales are incredibly low, given their mass advertising by paying youtubers and streamers for positive coverage this is quite a surprise.

The game has sold 150k units worldwide on steam, this is a very low number. Even Dishonored 2, which was considered a failure sold 650k units.

http://steamspy.com/app/480490

Mario cart 8 outsold prey on with all platform sales combined (ps4, xbox 1, and pc).

Will Bethesda revise their review policies do you think after this financial failure?

>>376492031
>wait the time the creator says to

Would be funny. In any case there are other sources of the poor sales. Apparently the game sold worse than Prey in 2006.

>>376492326
There was a lot of shit surrounding this game that caused it to flop that wasn't the type of game it was. The marketing was awful, both in amount and in the content of them, and people (especially on PC) were already burned with Dishonored 2's launch problems. Shame it had to happen to this game since it seems to be good but oh well.
>>
>No demo on PC, despite having demos on consoles
>Arkane's reputation for making a solid PC port shat the bed hard with Shithonored 2

Of course it's selling like shit on PC.

That all being said, I've heard the game actually runs well and is pretty alright. It's definitely something I'm looking forward to trying out once CPY cracks it.

>>
>>376492653
>My dude, clearly there has been a problem with the marketing.

I think that depends on the idea of "modern marketing" because nothing short of AAA major campaigns can apparently get to people these days if your game is even in the general vicinity of that level. What I mean by that is, your indies can carve out some space but the moment your game has serious budget behind it it needs crazy marketing to compete or it will flop. Prey really way a literal WHO compared to the push Bethesda had for Fallout 4, for example.
>>
>>376492653
Come on man, you know that's bullshit. Regular youtubers talking about it, I went to 2 different walmarts and a target and all 3 had big posters and Prey shit everywhere. Gamestop near my house same thing, big poster right on the door for Prey. This game received a lot of marketing, like most AAA titles, I don't know if it sold well or not but the marketing was the same as always, don't try to make excuses.

To be honest, I bought it off cdkeys instead of steam directly due to how cheap it was. Hell, it was going for $30-35 bucks for the last few months now.

I do feel bad, but I wonder if maybe Bethesda holding back review copies hurt it in the long run. Doom did well, but it was also a beloved franchise a lot of people were waiting on. Prey was not.

Wanna know what the real problem was? They never had a specific audience for this game, or at least they didn't specify what the fuck the game was about. The trailers were way too ambiguous and never presented the game for what it was, they just assumed people would be hooked enough to buy it and find out later but it wasn't enough.

They didn't shill it well enough to be honest. There was almost no marketing for it for a weird reason. It's like they wanted it to bomb.
>>
I didn't even know this game was out until this topic. In fact I have heard so little about it outside the pretty cool looking first trailer that came out for it back in...E3 I think I am not sure. Will check out though if it's anything like Deus Ex or System Shock 2.
>>
>>376491950
This will probably do much better in long tail sales. Also, I know I'm personally not getting it until some time has passed or GOTY version comes out because fuck Bethesda and their DLC policy.

Still mad about this with Dishonored. It's also the reason why I haven't bought the sequel yet.
>>
>>376493037
No shit. Nintendo fan buy games even for console they don't own. The switch version of BotW sold more than the switch herself.

Actually, a lot of people gave a fuck about Prey before it was released. It was up there in the same vein as Duke Nukem Forever, seemingly always in development hell.

Only the game was actually pretty good when it came out. Not like amazing, but certainly better than whatever was shat out with DNF.

The real reason why people were upset though is because Prey 2 actually looked interesting, but Bethesda decided to can it because "it didn't meet their standards of quality." This statement going out when Bethesda was publishing games like WET and Rogue Warrior.

This game would've probably gone over fine with everyone if Arkane weren't just lazy fucks and decided to give the game a unique name, instead of just picking from a list of Bethesda owned IPs.

Not really. Biggest thing about Prey was the use of level geometry with portals before Portal that barely anyone took notice of because people know jack shit about tech. Also, it had an Indian protagonist.
>>
>>376493474
I'm pretty sure Bethesda is the reason for the name, not Arkane.

I don't entirely agree with the logic the other poster is using but I can see why tons of people playing it due to piracy would help let people know what the game is. And not knowing what the game is, or even knowing it exists, seems to have been a really big problem with this game.

Not him, but almost all of those games were announced during E3 2016 to be released in 2017. Whether you know them or not is irrelevant. They were big enough to have a show in E3.

>>376493978
Keep saying that, but all anyone sees is a hand holding a weapon, and that's what people see. The last FPS I played was Skyrim (if you can call it an FPS). Before that was CoD MW2. Before that was FEAR. Before that was Resistance: FoM. I honestly don't know the last FPS game that any of my friends played that wasn't CoD or Battlefield.

The market will correct itself because big budget games like Prey won't sell well, and they will begin diversifying into other genres.

Good, Bethesda's scummy tactics of killing Prey 2 just in order to accuire Human Head should not pay off and any self respecting person should see this, you cannot bitch about games not being faithful to their advertisements (Prey 2 surprisingly didn't look much different from it's CGI trailer, this is especially unique given the times we live in where false advertising is rampant), you cannot bitch about games being dumbed down, not taking enough risks, not changing enough from sequel to sequel and then support the killing of Prey 2 by buying Prey2017.

Immersive sim was coined either by Looking Glass (who made System Shock and Thief) or by people to describe those games. It's been around since at least the late 90s if not earlier.
>>
You know this is it, right? This is it for Machine Games and Arkane?

Here's the thing: Dishonored 2 did -okay- but still underperformed based on Bethesda's stnadard. It's a great game, but money talks. Now we have Prey, a game that's great but is a total failure in sales. That's two titles in a row from Arkane that couldn't have been cheap to make, both of which are great and highlight what Arkane do best. Yet both are commercial slumps. Failures, even.

Watch Wolfenstein: The New Colossus fail too. Despite the critical and commercial success of both The New Order and The Old Blood, this one will fail commercially. It'll be a great game, just watch. It'll be what fans of The New Order want. And it'll fail.

And with that Bethesda will pull the plug on these kinds of games from Arkane and Machine Games for good. Enjoy them while they last.
>>
>>376494294
You can find a list but a couple came out just in the second half of last year alone:
August 2016 - Deus Ex Mankind Divided
Sept 2016 - Bioshock collection
Nov 2016 - Dishonored 2

I don't think it's the type of genre that most people want to play that frequently, and besides like some anon said above, it's just an FPS to the general public ( and one that people have no idea what it is and why they would want to buy it)

It does have a lot of controls but yes, I don't understand why people can't even bother customizing controls to be comfortable. Some of those (like turning and looking up and down) aren't even necessary and are done with the mouse with the mouselook mod. If you remove those you can get it to more or less standard FPS controls with a few extra keys.

It doesn't take 3 hours to rebind keys. And this entire conversation is pointless anyway since a modern game with the amount of mechanics that SS has wouldn't be using its exact key layout since its default is outdated, along with a lot of other games that even came after it like Thief and Deus Ex.

I'm not even the guy you initially replied to.

>>376495791
I highly doubt that demos are as effective anymore. In fact they are more likely to reduce sales because you can't bamboozle people to buy the game blindly with them. Then again, refund achieves the same effect and people who can't buy the game to refund it later wouldn't buy it in the first place according to logic.
