This. The haremshit was good in FC/SC/3rd because Joshua definitely ends up with Estelle and it added to the character relationships. But why the fuck does Lloyd have a harem? Why does Rean have a harem? What exactly does it add to the story or the characters' relationships with each other, other than "Then some girl confessed to Rean". It's so tacked on and appeals to the lowest common denominator.

Cold Steel is about a bunch of kids in High School. The main character is a black haired boy. That's about as much as I can say about him. You have your typical classmates and teachers and etc. etc.

There are political plot points going on in the background (and sometimes foreground) of both games. Most would agree Sky handles this better.

Thank God I never came into Trails threads before playing FC last year. I went into having absolutely no idea what was going to happen and was fucking blown away. The moment I completed my 50 hour run through of FC I IMMEDIATELY bought SC and started playing it right then and there. Part of the 90% here. I fully played through FC twice, and SC once. Currently working my way through 3rd because I'm the type of moron who forces themselves to see things they start through to the end. The gameplay, even for their time (2004/5?), is shockingly poor. Especially for a company with a long history of making rpgs.

I decided to test my moonrune knowledge, and so I've been playing Zero no Kiseki since I've beat The 3rd.

I saw folks try and argue that playing Crossbell before Liberl would be a-ok.

Those people obviously have not played any of the Crossbell duology.

CS1+2 have sold about a million combined (worldwide) so I don't think one or even both of the ports will do that well.

The way I see it, the ARCUS substitutes arts variation in exchange for better combat ability (being able to do chain crafts) and usage of specific arts or abilities. I wouldn't think this is so bad if it didn't mess with character customization so much.

The argument could be made that since you can now put on multiple of the same type of quarts (multiple status ailments, multiple same stat increases), that adds a layer of depth to where you have to learn both proper stat and arts allocation, but imo it makes the game more metagamey than it has any need to be.

I think a decent middle ground could be made where some quartz give specific arts but no/low elemental value and have stat quartz that give elemental value so you can have multiple arts.

That's a screenshot from a conversation between Arios and Renne. During the conversation, he namedrops that she's an enforcer, that Estelle and Joshua came to Crossbell to look for her, and ask if she intends to keep running from them forever. Cassius Bright is also namedropped.

Elsewhere it's dropped that Estelle and Joshua - who recently came to Crossbell - had helped with the "Liberl Disaster" that occurred the year prior. Everyone in the SSS are aware of what had happened.

Earlier than that, you run into Renne's father. There are hints about what had happened with his family in the past, such as how even though they're successful now they don't feel blessed.

This all happens early on in the game, That's a lot of spoilers. Which ones did Erebonia have towards Sky? I'd say it's fine to play Erebonia before Crossbell, or even Erebonia before Liberl, but you really need to play Liberl before Crossbell.

Eh I like Fie and Jusis. I do however have small hope Falcom, will turn it around Gaius and Rean since there is frame work to make some good stuff if they stop messing around. The others will sadly take a good deal of work, the fact that Victor is more interesting then his own daughter is telling, and that's probably Cold Steel 1+2s biggest problem. It's the secondary characters that are interesting, not class VII except for a small few.

The amount of spoilers that Crossbell has is much higher than the spoilers that Erebonia has.

To put it another way, Erebonia is "the other side" to the Crossbell events, whereas Crossbell is "the continuation" of the Liberl events. Cold Steel III is looking to be the conclusion to both Crossbell AND Erebonia's arcs, so it would be wise for someone to get Crossbell translated sooner rather than later.

How have you guys been building Ries? I've been building her as a straight physical attacker since my party for the final boss will already have two arts users. Infinity Sparrows has been really helpful in the abyss for AoE damage.

Also curious if anyone has tried building Kevin as a physical attacker, his new crafts in the 3rd seem like it could work pretty well.

I love Sky, but I wouldn't recommend it to everyone. You have to enjoy reading and enjoy lore to enjoy the game. 90% of the fun from the Trails series is running around and taking in the characters and lore of the world. Music is great and the graphics are well done for basically being sprites (in Sky/Zero/Ao). But the actual gameplay is nothing special. It's not awful, but it's just standard JRPG fare. Cold Steel 1/2 are more modern gameplay-wise, but they're also generally considered the worst by fans since they sacrifice a lot writing quality to be more anime-like.

I always tell friends that Sky/Zero/Ao are kind of like the Golden Sun series and that Cold Steel is like a watered down Persona. So maybe you can use those for comparison.

This is while I'll continue to be a fan of the series even with Cold Steel's degrading quality. There just aren't many options for people who love the kind of continuity, lore, and treatment of characters. It's kind of sad seeing as how the late 90's/early 2000's were filled with RPG's in this style, but here we are.

What sucks is that even though Sky built up the Kiseki fanbase based off of its believable worldbuilding and focused characters, Cold Steel is still the one that sells better. This means Falcom will make the future games more like Cold Steel instead of like Sky. Seems like people are okay with convoluted plotlines and shallow characters as long as they get their waifu simulator and high school settings.

Since you already mentioned you're down for the whole brunt of reading about to go on, there's honestly not much to give tips on about in Sky since FC is piss easy.

The most I can say to watch out for is hidden quests that don't show up on the usual quest bulletin boards and other smaller decision making choices that affect rewards later on in the game. There's a lot to miss so talking to a lot of the NPCs are a given. Reading up on which orbments add up to give what spells is also something worth looking into

Just keep in mind, because the focus of the series is lore, it'll probably take a while for you to be interested. Sky FC is notorious for starting slow, and a lot of new players get bored early on. But there's a reason for the slow beginning: it sets up the world, and it lets you start falling in love with the characters. That way, when the exciting stuff happens, you actually feel invested rather than "oh generic RPG protagonist number 8 is trying to save generic kingdom number 5 again".

Talk to all the NPC's in the game (it's actually worth it in this game), and play it in short bursts over a period of time if you get burnt out from reading a lot. Also if you're a completionist and don't like to replay games, you'll need a guide most likely.

Yeah, I really do hope the writing doesn't deteriorate too much further. If I had played Cold Steel first, I definitely would not have played Sky as it would have seemed like one of the other countless anime-style RPG's out there. But the Sky games had such solid writing and lore, that I'm willing to keep on slogging through the games in hopes of it turning around. Really hope Cold Steel 3 doesn't disappoint, but round 2 of high school is already worrying me (maybe by some grace of god they'll just establish Alisa as canon love interest, so we can skip another round of harem hijinks).

And I agree that out of class VII (excluding Rean), Jusis seemed to be the only one with any real characterization. Everyone else just seems so shallow.

Rean, as well as a few others like Laura and Gaius, are at the point where they need some direction or some renewed conviction. Rean hopefully becomes more entertaining and insightful with his life and lessons he will inevitably learn from his students.

The way it was put it in one of the previous threads was that Trails in the Sky takes some anime-tropes but generally only incorporate them when they make sense in the setting or flesh out the tropes to be more that one-dimensional. Not all of them, mind you, but most. Aside from the anime graphics, the games could pass off as a simple adventure RPG that were common back in the day, and it could be enjoyed by a more mainstream audience as well.

Cold Steel on the other hand just seems to force anime-tropes into the game even when they're out of place or not well fleshed out. They're just sort of there awkwardly to appeal to the anime-loving demographic, and you end up with a weaker story/characters as a result.

I can't really argue about the Gameplay being more important Story thing. It's kind of a preference thing, but since games are intended to be played, I would say most people would value gameplay instead. But I will say that I think Cold Steel's "other stuff" is more than just "slightly less good". It's a pretty sizable drop in quality.

CS's OST kicks the shit out of Sky's, so that's one non-gameplay related plus. Visits to each region/town are at the very least somewhat better than Sky's, if only because CS doesn't have shit camera angles. There are more likeable characters than Sky's cast had, whether this is due to bloat or not though I couldn't say, just that I can probably count the number of Sky characters I didn't dislike with one hand.

Falcom decided to keep going on the Sen line instead of going elsewhere...which is actually not that bad since there's no way out of not telling what is up with Crossbell after the occupation.

He's working for a military most of the continent disagrees with, and it's already been revealed that one of the main characters of Sen 3 is a straight-up Crossbell spy, so I have a hunch that he won't be reprising his full protag role and will only act as a mentor figure for a while and then go full Arios near the end

I hope Sen 3 keep these types of twists to a minimum... you kind of notice how the game's pattern of interest is revealing character's true identity. This started to become more prominent in Ao with Wazy and OMG IM ONE OF THE STRONGEST FROM THE CHURCH

And then they went nuts with this on Sen 1 and 2, with C being Crow, Jusis' brother and even all the other characters...

Remember on Zero when the identity of the Silver was revealed in the earliest chapters? That was because the game barely relied on twists on most of its characters, just here and there.

I hope Sen 3 doesn't pull that off that much, but they probably will...(I'm looking at Millium for example, and the rest of the cast)

Sen 3 will end up with 3, if not 3 and a half stars on Amazon, with a large majority of complains mostly focusing on how the story is nowhere near an end.
