From what I've seen, legends went through dev hell.

Fable 2 had larger areas than the glorified corridors of the first game, it dropping armor in favor of fashion was an understandable decision, guns were fun even if they were OP, melee weapon variety got notably worse and though the magic system did an interesting thing with spells, removing mana didn't help, the dog was for holding your hand so you could find treasure and was pointless since when it died you got the "yellow brick road" to treasure instead, the yellow trail, the dog, and the fact that you couldn't die and so you couldn't lose was the dumbest thing that they did, co-op was tacked on and not what people were expecting when it came out, as far as people thinking it was going to be good, I think most people had learned their lesson by now with Fable 1 since that was considered a disappointment. Also I think it was the first game to have a trail for you to follow as opposed to a waypoint, but feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

The problem is the game doesn't go far enough with it. If you could at least kill Reaver and the other Heroes at the end of the game, it would have been fine. If you could kill Reaver and then have an actual end boss fight, that would be best and actually thought provoking. If they really wanted to be deconstructive, then the heroes should have been killable at any time so you could have the option of killing them all and preventing the game from happening or at least ending a lot sooner since the big bad couldn't do anything.

Wouldn't it be cool if you could just find one of the heroes, kill them, and then spend the rest of the game doing side quests, trading property, and basically taking full advantage of the life sim elements? But they didn't because 'muh story'

Wrong. Certain armor gave you bonuses like the assassin outfit increasing your stealth and thieving. It was pretty shallow altogether, but the solution wasn't to make it even more shallow. Especially since you didn't even get any decent looking clothing in Fable 2 until after the first Spire incident.

Except for being some capable warrior or wizard they give us the tools and knowlagde to develop weapons.

On graduation the principal told us that we shouldnt use our knowlagde for weapon development, but he couldnt stop us.
