these devs are extremely aggressively viral marketing

https://boards.fireden.net/v/thread/376425132

they're even sperging out on twitter and pretending that the retard who spent 5 hours making 2000 character posts about why his game isn't shit and why he isnt a shill wasn't a dev and was just "someone trying to make them look bad"

the game is third rate shovelware, you can pirate the gog version if you really want but it's not even worth the download.

>I think the dev is legitimately mentally ill

This honestly wouldn't shock me. The game started off as a "homage" to games from 1996 then they started their ad campaign which was wildly inaccurate so there was some backpedaling claiming it was satire then once everyone pointed out it was not really similar at all to games from 1996 they just completely abandoned to claim. Now they are trying to separate the ad campaign from the actual games content. That in combination with the obvious as fuck viral marketing on /v/, it wouldn't shock me at all if he was mentally ill. One of the marketers was actually losing his shit on /v/ the other day rabidly defending the game far beyond what I've seen any autist fanboy do on here. The whole thing is just crazy.
>>
>>376475041
have you tried it?
Feel free to right now and get back to me, it should only take about 10 minutes

the other half of it ofc is that a different movement model changes the balance of a game: if you make jumps that are hard but doable and then give the player 5% more jump impulse you completely fuck up those jumps

they aren't elements of games that genuinely resemble rogue but they are elements of games that are habitually referred to as "roguelike" like binding of isaac, enter the gungeon, neurovoider, spelunky, flinthook, rogue legacy, darkest dungeon, immortal redneck, ziggurat, etc.

This is my situation so far too, although I played about an hour and a half.
The combat feels weightless, the sound design is rather weak besides the OST, and I'm already bored of fighting the same melee enemies over and over.
Don't know whether to refund it or not.
>>
>>376471931
The top steam review says the guns and physics are unsatisfying, the level design is procedural (automatically shit), and the monster AI boils down to "run directly at player".

That combined with the fact that Quake has better graphics pretty much kills it. Had a fun teaser trailer though.

But none of those games are roguelikes. They are called that for marketing reasons but most are also accompanied with tags like roguelite or roguelikelike. They are a completely different genre and usually an excuse for no talents to not have to design interesting levels. The only people who refer to them as roguelikes are the developers who try to trick buyers with lehardcore reputation of roguelikes and newfags who never heard of a roguelike until BoI came out.

All the things you listed were the exact opposite of what make a roguelike, like persistant progression.

yes, i know, but you are being pedantic about the term when it doesn't really matter. strafe calls itself a roguelike (or roguelite), and in the modern context that means that it is similar to games like isaac and gungeon, not that it is similar to games like rogue. this is stupid, i agree with you, but it's true.

the consensus seems to be that strafe fails as an old-fashioned fps. the question i'm asking is: does it succeed as a roguelike, in either the accurate sense or the modern, inaccurate sense? because so far it seems like it doesn't have many of the features that people like about those games

>the modern context

No, the modern context is roguelite. That tag exists for a reason. It's not like true roguelikes disappeared from the market, games like Caves of Qud, Pokemon Mystery Dugeon, Mystery Dungeon in general, are sold for real monies.

By using the word roguelike you're just helping marketers trick people into buying their games. The fact that Strife uses the term Roguelike and not Roguelite should tell you about the integrity of the developer.

Seriously though who are the chimps reviewing this game on steam? Half of them use aspects of the 90s games it uses to explain why the game isn't 90s enough. Others say it isn't 90s enough and then list its 90s elements as negatives. Most of the remaining gave it a bad review because of the roguellike nature even though the game is literally tagged as roguelike.

Indeed, and it was basically the first of its kind. It was an ok game for what it did. But all these so called "old school" shooters like Strafe keeping calling themselves similar to Doom and Quake but in reality are just aping Serious Sam and are becoming a problem. It's obvious to me now that they all lack level designers and proper AI developers so they fall into this pit of mindless enemy hordes in arenas rather than carefully crafted labyrinthine levels with smartly places enemies. In other words, these people like the Strafe dev never played Doom or Quake and shouldn't be making games they don't have an understanding of.

Seriously I don't know why all this hate, this game IS NOT BAD ! its a good game, I had a lot of fun as I shoot my way trought a horde of monster that exploded in a blood rain, a lot cons that people give is just because they didnt play enough or they didn't take one sec to learn what the item is about, just to inform you guys the small item that came from the crate are stats upgrade, they give you more accuracy, fire rate, mag capacity and damage, If you can survive longer there is actualy a shop where you can buy plenty of nice thing, I didnt see them all yet but there is a good bunch of it. The wepon are nice too the gunplay is realy responsive, the level generation is better then I expected didn't they could do so much possibilities. I'm not saying that the game is perfect no but so far I didn't have any major issue that could ruin my experience. I think that people are just used to play those codat 120$ for the same crap every year. Honestly for 20$ its defenatly worth the try, it a new and fresh concept created by a small studio that worked hard to bring there ideas and they did a great job. I've seen bigger devs that thrown much worse release then that, no one can lie about that. Thumb up for Pixel Titan !

I won't refund since I only paid about $8.50 out of pocket for it (had ~$12 in my Steam wallet from selling cards and some CS skins), but the game definitely needs work. IGN's review is accurate for the most part. Needs a lot of tweaking and polish. The lack of ammo and health really does make it feel unfair because after a few levels you're usually running pretty low on one or both. The randomized levels aren't great, but functional. The sound effects need a lot of work. Guns aren't as satisfying as they should be. Could become good if they actually try to improve it though. Which I doubt since the dev was too busy shilling here all day and getting mad at people for not liking it.

Better/more weapon customization, more items, allowing more than 1 main and 1 looted "special" weapon, or at least give a choice to not pick it up. Number of health/armor pickups are retarded slow.

Some spawns are inside a pit of non-aggro'd enemies and they all wake up as soon as you spawn.

I still like it, it's pretty fun.

Weapon accuracy is all over the place, enemies take 9000 bullets to the chest but are killed instantly upon being shot in the leg.

I'm bad at games so I think this game is pretty fucking hard. I think the game is OK honestly. The enemy AIR is pretty shitty, they do track you through walls and just constantly run at you, and they make little to no sound when running up on you so you can't tell they are coming. The game play is pretty much kite and shoot which wouldn't be so bad if the game was a little more forgiving. The soundtrack is badass IMO. The murder house is way more fun then the main game because it feels like a horde mode and the shitty AI works well enough there.

>completely based on nostalgia, no unique enemies or mechanics
>shooting somehow feels floaty; most guns suck or are unbalanced besides the shotgun and assault rifle
>fucking fall damage in a retro fps, and I'm talking REALISTIC fall damage. It's infuriating
>can be beaten in hours with no incentive to replay

and then just throw in every other problem with rogue likes that make them unlikable. I was really hoping the procedural generation would add replay ability, not take away from it. And the shooting is just meh. It's fun, that's it. Not nearly worth $20

lol the map is full of closed off narrow areas forcing you to take damage

The joys of procedural generation. Some runs I had near infinite ammo, some I had to spend half the level swinging my gun around like a fucking retard.
>>
>>376496929
Ammo is plentiful enough however, just check monster closets and more often than not there will be ammo there (and you get so much per pickup, it's really easy to get x99 before area 3)

Yeah upgrades being random is dumb because you get them too infrequently unlike other roguelites.

You can still kite enemies easily so it's not really forced damage.

True

Opinion

Enemy varience is low as shit, only interesting enemy is the sniper in the third area that tries to predict your movement and runs away from you but it's exclusive to that area and everything else is just bland.
>>
Thanks to enemies having literally zero sound this makes the first few levels harder than the later ones because melee enemies can sneak up on you out of nowhere unless you stop to back yourself into a corner for five minutes after thinking you cleared a room.
>>
>>376498228
Ammo for the primary weapon is plentiful, but not for any other guns. Why not make it like Nuclear Throne where every weapon use ammo from a limited set? (Bullets, shells, explosives, energy)
>>
>>376498692
Yeah it's really weird you aren't allowed to get ammo for them (especially when you grab the same gun twice you just got it twice in your inventory instead of adding it's ammo to the other one)
>>
>>376498614
This and projectiles are pretty easy to dodge. Getting killed from behind by some melee enemies you can't here coming that came out of some stupid monstercloset three rooms back well after you left it to begin with is just bad design.

Strafe is shit fo sho, and its procedural levels are a flaw, but I don't think procedural level generation is an inherent flaw, it's just implemented poorly. An fps needs interesting level design, like quake or doom, and the levels in this game are basically different variations of the same rooms and hallways. The secret to procedural level design is to make interlocking pieces that fit and complement each other, that can work together to make a mini puzzle, like spelunky. All these roguelikes like spelunky, rogue legacy, risk of rain, worked because even though there was a lot of rng, the levels were still varied and interesting. In strafe its just bland.

>Giving a smaller amount still doesn't mean it isn't a dumb thing to do.
Perhaps, but not a grave one. Money has different value to different people, you know. And in these case, the gravity of your mistake is really best measured by the amount of discomfort or regret it causes you.
So if you throw away what usually amounts to pocket change on an off chance that something might be good, but without ever regretting or missing that money, I don't think that is a particularly dumb mistake.

What is dumb is to invest into a kickstarter without being mentally ready to be dissapointed, and then getting all crazy with resentment and dissapointment. If you are not already OK with the fact that your investment might not pay off, you should be never funding anything like a kickstarter.

>I genuinely like the starting weapons, even if they feel weak as shit

>the shop gives you an incentive to save your scrap, but you also have the option to spend it on ammo/armor if you absolutely need to which
>finding permanent upgrades in boxes is pretty nice, I really appreciate that they added one that reduces random spread

things strafe did wrong:
>BB guns are more satisfying to shoot than this shit
>the movement is stiff and awkward, like if you're holding W in midair and then let go of W, you just stop completely in midair with no momentum conservation
>enemies literally just walk at you
>the design philosophy for enemy placement is quantity over quality, which is bad for fps level design, but who am i kidding everything is procedural anyway
>some enemies are kind of dumb, like those vent things that shoot homing rockets and drop permanent acid on the floor that burns you if you walk over it

>>376513451
Not so. Many games involve using cover, slowing down to aim down sights, shit like sliding and melee

CoD and the conventions it spawned may not be to your liking but they're still part of the genre. The fact is that games like Serious Sam and Strafe, that DO involve strafing and backpedaling, have been pretty scarce for years. I'm happy to see anything new come out along these lines

>>376513919
I hadn't heard of those, which means they're PC games. Wish I had a better machine for that sort of thing.

I used to have a lot of fun with Cube and Sauerbraten, but I don't remember if those levels were randomized or if there were just a lot of custom ones. Either way Strafe reminds me a lot of those, insofar as the enemies are bumrushing dumbfucks, but that's also sort of a genre thing

I found the Devil Dagger. You even use it same way as the game.
>>

I noticed that one dev on pretty much every major thread. Kinda wish they'd spend more time fixing the game than doing damage control.

Or maybe he's just the PR guy.
>>
>>376514867
those kind of ideas always sound good on paper but don't work out so well in practice
anyway they shouldn't be trying to argue with people on forums even if it must be frustrating to read
>>
>>376514890
Does is actually have ammo and do damage?
>>
>>376514890
Oh fuck. Does it need ammo?
>>
>>376513671
immortal redneck is even more shit, enemies not responding to getting shot and lackluster level design with retarded verticallity is even worse then this literal turd.
>>
>>376515239
>enemies not responding to getting shot
they stutter and get knocked back, it's only the visual element that's lacking
>>
>>376514867
The problem is that the first two enemies don't get replaced once the player knows how the game works, they are still the most common enemy even in the last area of the game. (and honestly only the area 3 unique enemies are any good interms of design. The Area 2 and 4 monsters are fucking garbage.)
>>
>>376514867
>all these enemies are actually super simple guys

Yeah but you throw a shitton of them at you, which isn't a good way to teach players.

Hell even Serious Sam does this better. First time you encounter a new enemy it's usually just one or two of them (not counting secrets)
>>
>>376514867
Yeah that faggot was writing essays here too, freaking out whenever he got called out as a shill. he's been bumping this shitty fucking thread all night as well

A lot of what he post is defending mechanics from other mechanics they made themselves. Like how reload is important because players shouldn't be scrambling for a new gun. But we would only do that because all the other guns can't hold extra ammo.

He's not even a programmer from what I've read.
>>
>>376515150
>>376515151
It's more like a power up that lasts for a minute. And yes it works just like the original game. Hold fire for rapid dagger shots (even has the creepy sounds from DD itself) and tap fire for a shotgun burst. Cleaved through enemies easy while I had it. Even pixelizes the screen like DD.

it's ogre sonny jims

RIP shills
>>
>>376515365
And sound.
I'm just disillusioned with all these roguelite fps popping up, they all fail on one level or another. The enemies are always bland, level design is mediocre, the difficulty goes from retarded EZ for first 3 levels, then suddenly the hammer slams down etc.
>>
>>376480940
Get out Sonny Jim.
>>
>>376515573
Also forgot to mention. To find secrets do things like shooting the astronaut bodies and blowing up tech panels near the ceiling. They'll open up areas with hidden caches of health, ammo, and even shields.

Found it near the start of 1-2. Dont know if it was me picking up the silver token at the start of 1-2 or blowing up the panels in 1-1.
>>
>>376515531
I doubt they even had a single programmer working on that game.
>>
>>376515716
I once shot a rocket at a wall with nothing on it and it opened up a secret. Really wish they did the Duke Nukem wall crack thing
>>
>>376515531
>Is it unlike 96? Yes, it definately is

THEN DON'T MARKET YOUR GAME AS A 90s SHOOTHER YOU FUCKERS

There's fucking nothing 90s about this except the marketing.

wow it looks awful

Not sure why I fond this so funny
>>
>>376514867
>Hitstun makes enemies trivial
Yes, you dipshit, it does if the enemy Ai is so moronically simple that it just charges at you in a straight line.
Who would've thought that a game that relies on COMBAT has to have sophisticated Ai to make the combat actually enjoyable.
It's like they stopped working on the Ai 3 months in and then just awkwardly designed the entire game around the busted enemy behaviour.

The fact that this guy writes a 5 paragraph post defending his clearly flawed design is ridiculous, to say the least.
>>
>>376516686
It doesn't even need to be sophisticated, look at Doom. Apart from the Revenant, all the enemies in that game are pretty basic yet people are still playing it 20 years later.

that has to be the single worst game design choice I have read about in a so-called retro fps
>>

>nailgun from Doom
>this is from the people who made Serious Sam

Idiot
>>
the people that made the game may not understand what made the old games good but neither does this retard who just fires of a list of the most superficial shit
also his footage doesn't show anything past the first zone...
>>
>tfw preordered it from a third party site so can't even refund it.

I'm just going to pretend I paid double price for Vanquish instead.
>>
>>376494631
every level has 1 one (1) food machine
stage variety is honestly fine since there are far more critical issues
the one gun is fine because even the machine gun is enough to sprint to lvl 3 or kill hordes

the biggest thing i hate is how you can fucking rocket jump but since you have no health pickups and enemies chunk you so much so even your own backsplash with anything explosive makes them shit

that and the grenade launcher having the worst aoe of any fucking game
>>
I didn't even play this game and I still feel let down...
>>
>>376522032
Health's a lot easier if you shoot the panels near the ceilings to open up secret small rooms. Like 50 health or shields in those.
>>
>>376522353
oh shit really i wish i had known that earlier. i hate that i never know whats happening in this game, like i find secrests all the time but have no idea what i did
