In general I think it's funny how the JP Metroid games and 'murrican Metroid games seem to have different interpretations of Samus' characters.

See, Samus in Sakamoto/R&D1's games wasn't nessicarily a silent protagonist in the same way characters like Link and Gordon Freeman are, she just had literally no one to talk to Metroid/Zero Mission, Metroid II, and Super Metroid. In Fusion and Other M, where she's surrounded by people to speak to, she, well, speaks. Even in ZM and SM, she has a few monologues which gives some insight to her character.

In Tanabe/Retro's Metroid Prime games, however, Samus basically is Link, a blank stand in for the player, remaining completely silent even when there's other characters that talk to her like in Metroid Prime 3. As far as I know, the only dialogue Samus has in any Metroid game with Tanabe at the helm is at the end of Federation Force, where Samus isn't even the main player character anyway.
