I think the people who struggled getting that trophy didn't really diversify their party, so they were probably people who didn't go far with or max out Mishima and Hifumi, social links that make it easier/rewards you to do so. Because Mishima gives full exp to backup members, people who didn't get that probably just kept to a core of 3-4 characters plus MC. And for Hifumi, even I had characters I used less than others, but being able to put them in immediately for when they would be useful was probably a big part in why I got it early.

And like you said, actually using Akechi. I don't know why anyone wouldn't use Akechi in the Casino. He's incredibly strong when you get him and has the type strength for like half the shadows in the dungeon. Do people hate pancakes that much?

It's actually pretty easy to deduce that. Goro knows what Shido is like so him acting slightly OOC during the election campaign after they have a congratz meetup bounds to have some sort of reasons. It's almost as obvious as Shido's desperate counter measure to PT taking his treasure. I called it right at the exact moment beating him in the Metaverse.

Shido is objectively worse than Akechi. He was the string puller, calling all of his hits that Akechi undertook. Not to mention all of his underground ties and affiliations that only served to help him get rid of more people in his way.
There's no doubting what Akechi did was unforgivable because of his ulterior motives. The team agrees with that, but the reason they were sympathetic was because of all of the shit that happened to him and they can level with that.

That being said, I still think his death was needed since it was the best way for him to atone for his crimes.

The real funny part? Shido couldn't even have done any of it had Akechi actually not fucking approached him about being his personal assassin! Everything that happens from that point on, from Wakaba Isshiki's death to all of the mental shutdown/psychotic breakdown incidences are entirely Akechi's doing, and he shows absolutely no remorse over any of it. Any sadness he does show near the end of the game is because he's been caught out and defeated, lamenting that he's not as special as people think he is.

There's a big, big difference in having a sympathetic backstory and actually being a sympathetic character. Akechi has the former, but definitely not the latter.
