The matter of the fact is that it's a well documented occurrence. There was a bug on release that virgil would just walk back and forth not attacking. Plenty of map breaking. Plenty of broken bosses.

That's the exact opposite of what the graybox/grayscale is for. If you're making a work of art (regardless of what it is) and you make a grayscale and it isn't good, you don't just hope that it will be good once you add the color to it, you fix the grayscale first and then add the fine details afterwards. The entire point of a grayscale (in art) or a graybox (in game development) is to make sure that whatever you're working on is good before you go through the effort of adding all the color and fine detail in, since that's what takes the most effort.

When something as shitty as DmC comes out, if gives you a new perspective on the things you took for granted in DMC4. Sure, Nero isn't perfect, and falls short on being as great as Dante, Vergil, or the girls, but as a playable character he's great, and srikes a good balance between being accessible without handing the game's entire mechanics in a silver plater for newcomers, and having enough depth to go cuhrazy at the hands of dedicated players.

That's easily the strongest part of his design, for my money.

I played through dmc4 at the same time as my roommate. I love action games, he doesn't. I used Exceed, he didn't. We both had fun. He didn't miss exceed because it isn't a necessary mechanic to succeed, I loved it because it gave his otherwise basic inputs a unique complexity.

It always blew my mind that every sword strike had unique timings for Exceed and Max Act. I wish Capcom put that kind of effort in nowadays.

Or make the buster a command grab, turn Circle/B into a hand to hand button, sorta like how Trish plays with both hands to hand. Sword and Guns, and give him commands like:

Yes, what you describe is what I originally hoped for. He has this rad claw and you can't even slash with it.

He's still a decent character, but it seems like a missed opportunity to just have neutral and forward.

The whip from Bayonetta did a great job of pulling enemies and attacking normally, for example. Obviously that has hindsight going for it.
