How common are YLOD or other issues with these PS3's?
>>
>>376439997
It seems the really old 4 USB port PS2 emulation fats are dying off. My 80GB 2 port USB model still works fine.
>>
>>376439997
If it's not dead already, you basically need to repaste the PS3 if you don't want it to die.
>>
I hear it's really hard to get one set up online with the store and everything.
>>
>>376440190
That wouldn't be an issue, it would be an offline console for me.
>>376440157
That sucks, and the two ports have no PS2 support?
>>
first two year of use should be extremely rare

but damage accumulates over time and and cracks start forming in the shitty solder, frequent power on/off where it heats and cool often can make it worse

optical drive also fairly prone to failure, PSU as well in rarer cases
>>
>>376440273
the 2 port models do not play PS2 games
>>
>>376440190
? It's a regular ps3. How is it any different from normal?
>>
>>376440282
So basically it's eventually doomed to fuck up
>>
>>376439997
Why doesn't that tank have any treads?
>>
>>376440562
well, depends on how much you use it -- if you just use it for those few games now and then, it'll probably stay fine

early 360 had a tendency to break out of nowhere whichi s what cause the outrage

PS3 didn't break for the average normie

That aside, if you want the toughest PS3, get a non-super slim
>>
>>376440708
well, super is fine too, but there's this cheap feel about it where it's obvious they tried to cut costs
>>
I watch Talledega Nights 24/7 and my PS3 hasn't broke yet.
>>
>>376440165
I tried to repaste it, but the motherboard was damaged for don't do it before.
>>
My ps3's bluray laser died which was a pain in the ass to replace. I had to go through 3 laser/laser+tray replacements that before finally getting a working one.
>>
>>376442739
mine been dead for years too, but I switched to 100% digital around 2009 and didn't bother fixing

only got a few games I can't play anymore, not that I ever planned to go back to anyway

My gangsta af fatty ps1/2 backwards compat 80gig crapped out on me two years ago. Ruined my week. I kept it as clean as possible but my cats being addicted to chilling behind my battlestation must have taken it toll. I still have it. Planning on fixing it when im not a retard about electronics anymore. Ive heard all slims ever made have literally not ylod'd yet
>>
>>376439997
Ive had the same super slim ps3 for about 5 years and it just does not read discs anymore. got the blu ray laser thing replaced once but it stopped working about a year after. I have a couple of my favorite games downloaded onto the hard drive and they work fine. i will never buy disc copies of games again. i know people with the older versions of ps3's and while there lasers lasted longer than my super slim the laser's do eventually break and stop working, with the rest of the system working as good as new. I honestly have never seen a PS3 get a yellow light of death, or heard of a ps3 crapping out all together, but the majority of ps3's that are pushing 5-6 years have there lasers break and stop working. download all your games from the PS store and you will be fine.
>>
I still have mine. Its worked perfectly fine for years since release up until a year or so ago when it would just randomly shutdown.

Took it into a local repairs shop and got it working fine again for cheap.
>>
>>376439997
very, very rare like in the 0. area. unless you are a full retart and wrap it in a wet blanket.
>>
>>376439997
My OG 20 gig YLOD'd after 3 years of near constant use.
>>
>>376439997
I used mine for 10 years and then it got one. Bricked with Revengeance inside of it on a replay of the game. The PS3 was a day one-r too.
>>
>>376439997
It's dead, Jim. Get a slim
>>
OG 60GB here. Still kicking since day one. It's gotten quite a bit of use but it was never my primary console. Had to reformat it just once.
>>
>>376439997
YLOD happened to my father's launch 60GB PS3 in 2011, we sent it in for repairs to Sony and got back the same model (still BC with any PS2 game) with a brand spankin' new motherboard.

It receives daily use from my family and has lasted longer so far, so whatever Sony does to repair/replace the old motherboards works better than whatever cooling solution was in the original launch PS3's.
>>
My first PS3, the backwards compatible one, died about 3 years after I got it

I like to believe it was done on purpose so Sony could start selling PS2 games on the store
>>
>>376443337
You would wonder what was the failure rate for unit in those clusters.

I mean they are so close together and basically spewing hot air all around each other.
>>
>>376444424
my 80GB MGS4 bundle PS3 "half-software ps2 BC" died around 3 years after I got it too

rather than fixing, I just got a slim, and so far I've used it like 100 times longer than I did my fat ps3 and everything is fine
>>
>>376443718
>Ive heard all slims ever made have literally not ylod'd yet
What? Slims YLOD too, just not as often.
>>
>>376444550
the gpu isn't doing any work, so it'll run a lot cooler overall

also, room is probably cooled
>>
>>376439997
I know someone with one but they rarely use it so that's probably why it still works.
>>
>>376444068
I should add that by "near constant use" I mean that pretty much whenever I wasn't playing games or watching something I was running Folding@home, so the cpu pretty much never got to rest.
>>
>>376439997
Ive had mine since launch and it is still kickin it. I worry about an impending YLOD though, its been very loud and hot lately. Ive never opened it up to clean the dust or apply thermal paste, so I will probably do this soon. I worry that taking it apart will result in some stressing of the motherboard, cracking the brittle solders though. If I am opening it up anyway, should I just do a preventive reflow? is any of it worth the risk of damage?
>>
>>376444735
Oh yeah, I've heard RSX was the main culprit for YLOD.
>>
>>376444184
Slim has problems too with the cheap plastic constantly expanding and making loud cracking noises because of the heat.
>>
I have one that'll boot up fine, but the fan keeps accelerating non stop from the moment I hit the menu

Eventually it's even louder than a vacuum on full strenght and that's when I turn it off, I hear it's because of dust and lack of thermal paste right?
>>
Do Wiis also die like PS3s or Xbox360s?
>>
>>376445020
The optical drives do.
But then you can softmod it.
>>
>>376442951
>>376443020
It seems manageable, there are better teardown/repaste/assembly videos, and you wont be reflowing the mother board like this shows.

My launch fat is still working, released almost 11 years ago.

Other than putting in a 500GB HDD it is still functional, played persona 5 on it and the store works as well.

If you can fidn one cheap for like 100 burger bucks id go for it because all the faulty ones have already died.
>>
>>376439997
>How common are YLOD or other issues with these PS3's?
Fat PS3s have an extremely high failure rating.

The reason we didn't know this at the time of release is that unlike the first model Xbox 360s before the zypher GPU chip was introduced, which also had an extremely high failure rating, the amount of time it would take for fat PS3s to get the YLOD was much longer, sometimes years.
At this point in time, most fat PS3s, or SPIDERSTATION 3s as some call them, are dead.
If you're in the market for a PS3, don't buy a used far one. Go for the slim model. Not the super slim, as that also has problems, just the slim.
>>

Mine YLOD'd after like 3-4 years, but I was a poorfag who needed to play his cawadooty online with his friends, so I figured out a fix
>Disassemble down to the motherboard
>Take heat gun at about 400 Fahrenheit
>Reset the solder in the motherboard by heating it up for about 5 minutes
>Let cool
>Reassemble, using good heatsink compound (Silver bullet from radioshack was the best)
>Fixed
Unfortunately this is only a temporary fix, it'll die again in about a week, but you can do it again. It was a lengthy process and I was doing it about once a week for a year.

I was about 15 when I was doing it weekly, it sucks the first couple of times but you can do it in about 30 minutes once you get good at it.
Whatever you do though, do not fuck with the cd drive more than necessary without knowing exactly what you're doing, I fucked mine up pretty good trying to get the disc out without starting the ps3 and it took me a week to figure out how to fix it.
>>
>>376445020
3 years ago my firstwave wii stopped reading discs. It turns on fine tho. But with the store deactivated (didnt have anygames on my hd) And couldnt put my games in i was left with just a glowing rectangular box
>>
>>376445181
From the videos I've seen it seemed strenuous, they cleaned the CPU and heated it in the oven and a bunch of shit as well though

I'll do it eventually when I get a better screwdriver I guess
>>376445225
It's only worth as much hassle you're willing to put up with imo, you can always buy PS1s and 2s still so it's not that much of a blow really
>>
>>376445513
I think that you can mod it without a functioning optical drive.

What did folding@home really do? I remember it being something like lending your ps3's processing power to medical places that could decrypt proteins or something? I would use it pretty often when I wasn't home, probably a mistake in hindsight with the failure rate being kinda high with the fat PS3.
Did anything come of it?

A 60GB PS3FAT is the only way I can play Tales of Vesperia translated so it better last goddamn forever. The one I got was barely used though, I had to update it's firmware to 3.55 to mod it even
>>
>>376443718
80gb isnt the original backwards compatible, the 60gb is. you have the software compatible one. also dont bother as it will just happen again. you need a reball, not a reflow or else its just stixky taping the issue

>>376444630
only due to defect during manufacturing or disgusting keeping conditions

>>376444858
thats not how it works, opening it up wont crack the solder at all and you cant reflow whats not broken. again reflow isnt a permanent fix anyway
>>
>>376445997
it's okay, PS3 emulation been making serious progress

just need to last a few more years
>>
>>376445598
Thankfully I have a ps2 and a ps4 so if it dies someday i can just worry about getting a slim. There are still so many games I want to play on my ps3 though, Im gonna but an hour or two into overhauling it and hope I can continue to play it for years to come.
>>
>>376445687
I feel you anon. There was so much trial and error involved, after a while I stopped even reassembling it fully, just the ps3 barebones running in open air. I got pretty comfortable and borderline reckless with it towards the end of its run.
Also at one point I had a ps3 that failed but the disc drive still worked, and another ps3 that had a failed disc drive. Exact same model but for whatever reason Sony made disc drives that could only be used with the ps3 it came with, I don't know why they did this.
>>
I went through 2 Xboxes that RROD'd on me twice. I said fuck that afterwards and got a PS3, which was around 2009 or so. My PS3 is still going strong and has never had any problems. Fuck Kikerosoft.

>>
>>376445881
Not only can you mod it, it's also the easiest console to mod.
>>
>>376446124
Thought about doing this with two Dreamcasts that I have. The restriction is probably just to deter hackers/modders from doing unofficial things. Stupid, but I guess it's understandable.
>>
How do you replace a launch ps3s blu ray drive?
>>
>>376445881
It's super easy to mod and tutorials are out there. As far as I know you just need a USB drive and a memory stick for games.
>>
>>376446121
If you don't want to do all the work yourself but still want a decent job done you could just drop it off at a PC repair shop you know

I'm too lazy to do even that though so I guess I'm fucked
I already have a slim, I just have one particular game I want to play that can't be emulated and can't be played on my old model PS2 so basically I have the worst luck
>>
>>376446438
you'll first need a human skull and fresh blood from a virgin
>>
>>376446438
If you can install CFW, your PS3 doesn't need a working blu-ray drive.
>>
>>376446438
unscrew and put in. cfw is needed for certain models

>>376446289
3.55 ps3 is easier, and then handhelds are way easier
>>
>>376445816
It's as you said. It ran simulations of protein chains to try to see if there's a causal relationship between them and various diseases.

I don't know if anything immediately useful has come from it yet, but I do remember reading that, while it was live, PS3s ran more simulations than all other sources combined.

Not at all.
You just need a 2.5 sata HDD, they made it really easy you just pop off a cover and put in a new HDD.

Course the system will format the HDD but hey a SDD might work(though ps3 use sata1 not 3 so sdd may be slower than it would be i n a new pc)
>>

The console the first and second version of the fat PS3 had this huge design flaw. Both the CPU and GPU where both sandwiched between the power supply hottest component. Creating a huge hot spot on the other side of the heatsink. After a while the tashers on the solder joints of the GPU and CPU become brittle. Overtime they may break under heat.

They're Technics that allow to re melt the copper in the PCB but it's very much duck tape to the problem

It's only common if you don't take care of your shit (dusty vents and interior, dried up thermal paste, and shoved into the corner of your room with hardly any airflow)

Personally I would get a slim over a fat. Fats use up too much power which means more heat and louder fans. You lose native PS2 support but slim can do PS2 emulation with cobra which works well for some games.
