Just beat this game, my first Serious Sam game. Very good, but absolutely not what i expected. I though it was going to be closer to doom without waves and stuff like that. Instead i get a first person bullet hell.
>>
And you know what: it's still probably the easiest and tamest one.
>>
That's Serious Sam in a nutshell pretty much. Like a first person shooter version of Dynasty Warriors.

Mod wise I recommend BFE Enhanced. You need the workshop resource packs but the whole thing makes BFE more akin to the old games in terms of insane enemy hordes, especially in early game. The suburbs for example will have some Zorgs around, beheaded bombers and firecrackers on rooftops harassing you and generally increased enemies. Ammo gets boosted too to compensate, with being able to get the Sniper Rifle and Lasgun without secret hunting.

Also keep an eye on Serious Sam Fusion, Croteam already has TFE and TSE HD on it, and they stated they're remaking SS2 to be less silly on the newer engine.

lame, its fine as it is, just needed a little more polish

Playing BFE with the Enhanced, Classic Rocketeer and Kamikaze stats, no reloading and projectile-shooting cloned trooper mods is pretty much the way to go after playing the two Encounter games.

On the plus side, the double ammo pickups and capacity makes some new things viable, like huddling in a corner when Marsh Frog rooms hit and crouch spraying the tommygun around. You'll actually have the ammo to take out the entire wave with simple spraying.

Played Serious Sam on 360 last year and it seriously sucked ass. The entire game was just running around with weak guns trying to kill literally infinite amounts of enemies. Man, they did so many things right and at the same time got so many things wrong
Why is there less enemy variety than previous games?
Why do you get the minigun a good chunk after the midway point?
Who asked for reloading the shotgun and ass rifle?
Why are the first several levels just small corridors with thousands of hitscan enemies?

Like seriously who asked for this
They took a look at first and second game and said "Yes, yes, this is good, we just need updated graphics, less weak baddies who shoot projectiles and more baddies that fire hitscan weapons, this will increase the fun. And don't forget to take away half of the weapons, can't have the player overpowered. And make the maps cluttered."
Still had lots of fun especially for a shooter released after 2007 but god damn, they took away the guys with green and red shirts, you can't have this type of game with majority of enemies doing hitscan.

You can replace any weapon. TFE is much more enjoyable when you replace Grenade Launcher with Sniper Rifle.
>>
>>376425230
The Mutilator is actually a handy way to deal with Kleer swarms. Each link causes the target to stagger, meaning you can wipe out entire squads of Kleers with just that.
>>
Serious Sam is a game that I started to absolutely love but as you go on get absolutely tired of. It especially becomes the case in Second Encounter when they really start to overuse the "Have all the enemies spawn run down this long ass corridor for twenty minutes".

>>
>>376425031
>Good, it makes it feel more special.
No? it's just a minigun. launch a wall of bullets at the enemy, except you don't have to reload every 5 seconds.
>Me, though I don't care about BFE's single shotgun, it's useless.
It slows down the gameplay. How is that good? I get the tactics part about having to watch your ammo but there's all those other games that have that, and SS had a rifle that's basically a slow minigun before anyway.
>They're not?
Maybe not the very first, but there are plenty like that. I just don't like this combined with the hitscan enemies, even if they do little damage.
Those are the reasons SS3 is the weakest. Basically the things that are killing vidya since 2007. Final levels are good, but anything before those had me wondering if I should just start TSE again.
>>
>>376425974
From what I've seen Superhot uses a teleport mechanic but works well with the gameplay and looks more fun then the main game.

Not sure if it's worth the price though.
>>
>>376426097
>will 4 have less bullshit?
I'm afraid that with the VR gimmick, they're gonna cram it full of bullshit like dark tunnels and jumpscares.
>>
>>376426035
Eh, I dunno. It's certainly impressive how many enemies they crammed in there, but the actual variety is pretty poor. Most of the time you're fighting two or three enemy types at best.
>>
>>376426035
BFE Final Level is actually pretty boring because there's like one instance of enemies spawning behind you (big spiders). Though Kleer+Khnum rush is pretty cool. Khnums are cool in general.

>>376426110
>No? it's just a minigun.
It also uses a special ammo so you can't just spam it for the rest of the game after you get it, like you do in TFE/TSE.
>It slows down the gameplay.
It differentiates the AR more from the minigun, making it feel less like a "slow minigun.
>Final levels are good
Final level is pretty awful, actually. The best BFE level is the first level from the DLC.
>>
>>376426321
>Most of the time you're fighting two or three enemy types at best.
This is true of pretty much every fight in the franchise. That's not a bad thing either - 2-3 enemy types can be an interesting combination without becoming just a blurry mess of everything the game can throw at you.
>>
>>376417913
>stated they're remaking SS2 to be less silly on the newer engine
Maybe it's better to forget about this mistake and make SS4 instead
>>

It is also GODtier against Khnums. When they are super close to you just tap them with it and they will stop for a sec thus making some space.

And this is good how? Besides in first two if you run out of bullets you're out of bullets, good luck dealing with a horde of kleer or harpies with a rocket launcher. You NEED to be careful about what you shoot and when, not just setting shotgun+ass rifle to quickswitch for 80% of the game.

>And this is good how?
Gee I don't know how it differentiating weapons a good thing. Like, why would you want your hitscan street sweeper+ to be any different from your regular hitscan street sweeper other than doing more damage? That's preposterous.
>Besides in first two if you run out of bullets
You just switch to the laser gun which is literally a non-hitscan minigun and I have no idea why you people want to have both it and the minigun in the same game. THEY'RE THE SAME FUCKING THING. Maybe if lasgun bolts could ricochet from the walls and floors, that would be pretty cool. As it stands, it's a boring gun.

Besides, RL is perfectly capable of handling most Kleer waves and the game (especially TSE) gives you a Serious pack before every major fight. So yeah, not much ammo management here.

>>376427081
I don't like Guardian of Time much myself, just saying that you don't need a dozen enemy types in a fight to make it meaningful.

>>376427084
Projectiles, though. Granted, you can shoot down a lot of them but when you're shooting down projectiles you aren't shooting down enemies. Kleer bolos in particular can kill you quite fast.

Just click-click-click to send a bunch of mines hopping into a kleer wall.
>that the weapon is basically the minigun except you reload every five seconds
And it does twice less damage per bullet. When you combine those factors, it's actually a very different weapon. It's not a crowd control weapon, minigun is, RL is, AR is not, AR is when enemies are attacking in smaller groups or are individually very weak. Also one thing I love about AR is that you can cancel a bit of reload animation, not sure if it gives you any actual advantage but it feels cool to do.

I absolutely hate people who claim Serious Sam and Painkiller play just like Doom and the like.

Classic 90's level design reminds me of dungeon crawlers, where you're looking for keys and secrets. Hell, Wolf 3D even had treasure to find. Combat encounters were mostly incidental and or ambushes.

Serious Sam and Painkiller level design is more linear, like an arcade game. Combat encounters are typically hordes, and in most cases, its required to kill everything in the room/arena in order to proceed further. Secrets are still a thing, but they're usually not too far from the beaten path, and big side paths are virtually non-existent.

Op here, i just thought it was going to be loke doom because i usually see the game described as "fast paced old school shooter", which probably reminds everyone of doom.

I remember the first half sucking, but the second half was great.

Did a run recently with this mod to alleviate enemy variety: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=266276003
Really makes the encounters feel different and unique, with some enemies only popping up once.

Didn't mind the concept of reloading weapons, but the animations are badly done and lack polish. Their balance is bad too. Either make them much quicker, or give more ammo per clip, especially on higher difficulties.

Also, didn't like a lot of the background music, especially compared to TFE or TSE. It just feels tiring to listen to for long stretches of time, which I never got from the other SS.
>>
>>376436754
You can still attach C4 on him like on normal Scrapjacks which does tons of damage and he goes down in a couple of charges.

Is hard mode the most fun to play? Hear me out here, Serious is great in how challenging it is, but it becomes too much of a tedious slog at times (and weirdly enough easier in some places).
>>
I guess i must be shit, but i got my ass fucked by the very last "wave" in BFE, the one with about 20 khnums and a million kleen, even on normal difficulty.

The rest of the game was easy, though.

Is TSE even winnable on Normal? From Courtyards onward I had to switch to Easy the game doesn't give enough ammo to deal with all these fucks.

>using shotgun when double barelled exists
>using tommy when minigun exists
>using grenade launcher ever
what's with the blatantly dog shit weapons in these games? Weapon progression my ass more like making one weapon completly obsolete within 20 minutes of aquiring it.
>>
>>376447793
shotgun is much much better and faster for enemies like Gnar, floating Gnar, kamikaze

Double barrel is good for kleer, bulls, pumpkin chainsaw dudes, scorpions and essentially anything that doesnt die from one hit of the normal shotgun
>>
>>376447793

Tommygun is also much more ammo efficient for frogs.

Grenade launcher can decimate kleer rushes especially the insane one in TFE
>>
>>376447793
Regular shotty reloads far faster and stuns faster than dual

Tommy has far more reliable one-shot-per-click measurement and shots come out instantly, making it great for kamikazes without wasting million bullets keeping the gun spinning and allows you to better line enemies up for the explosions

Grenade launcher doubles as a mine layer and a fully charged shot goes WAY faster than a rocket, getting rid of mechs far faster and overall being godly for werebulls and kleers far way without using up a ton of bullets

tl;dr go play on something other than easy, asshat. you'll learn how to use everything
>>
>>376448357
>go play on something other than easy, asshat. you'll learn how to use everything

This. If you dont play on serious then you're not playing the game the way it was designed.
>>
>>376447793
I honestly think that Grenade Launcher is far more better than Rocket Launcher. It just takes some time to get used it.
But yeah, I will say that Serious Sam 3 has some real fucking problems with gun balance. Devastator, Minigun, Sirian Mutilator, and Double Barrel shit all over the other guns in such a hilariously way.

Alright, I've bought the SS pack a while back and I have yet to start playing, which one's the best to start with, should I play them all or skip games? If so, which ones?
>>
>>376449347
Its free you idiot

>>376449392
Play them all, skipping is for pussies
>>
>>376449392
Work from TFE to BFE in order. Skip most spinoffs, but play Double D XXL
>>
>>376449392
the first encounter. Play on serious but make sure you get the secret tommygun behind the wall in the first room you encounter frogs in.

Then just play them in order. You can skip 2 if you want but its worth a playthrough i guess. Thats the only one i'd recommend a skip on.
>>
>>376449000
>Secrets: 34/71
So I'm no insane in thinking the game is balanced around secrets on Serious right?
It feels like you're expected to have double barrel and rocket launcher by the 2nd level.
>>
>>376449392
You can skip SS2 altough it's not as bad as some people say it just has retarded elementary school tier humor and like 20 second music tracks on loop.
>>
>>376449596

Don't listen to this guy, serious is impossible without knowing where certain secret items are.

Fucking casuals. They're supposed to be hitscan. You can evade all of their damage by cleverly staying out of their los.
>>
>>376449831
its really not. Only that first tommygun is really necessary.

Did my first playthrough of all games on serious
>>
Do you get double ammo on Serious in TSE HD or did they remove it? I kinda wanna finally play the game seriously.
>>
>>376421871
I wish one day it somehow gets ported to PC.
>>
>>376449930
It's not, but even level 2 on TFE has several "this is stupid with pistols and a single shotgun" encounters. TSE (save for gimmick rooms) and BFE I had no problems playing on serious the first time however, so I recommend TFE Normal then the rest in release order Serious.
Note 2 had several spawn issues for me, and can be skipped, recommend trying it regardless.

TSE isn't in Egypt.
I'm guessing you are playing these games in chronological order.
>>
>>376455191
Only 1 and BFE are Egypt. BFE is in Egypt because that's where the timelock is. A nice lil tidbit is that if you get high and look around during the fight with Ugh Zan IV, you can spot the ruins of Haesphut in the distance, that being the first level of TFE.

>>
>>376455191
BFE and TFE are the only ones in Egypt. And its because Egypt was a theme and setting that wasnt used in an FPS yet. It also probably was a choice since it allows for big open desert levels to show off the Serious Engines ability to have huge draw distance and loads of enemies without dropping frames
>>
>>376417471
What's the best way to play 3?

I just bought 1 and 2 recently
>>
>>376457649
what do you mean? If you mean difficulty then serious. All should be played on Serious
>>
>>376457649
If you want chaos on the level of the originals, get the BFE Enhanced mod (will need to DL the resource packs from Workshop as well). Beefs up enemy counts (and ammo) and lets you get the Sniper and Lasgun in normal play. They still exist in secrets though.

A change that makes it hectic is the Major mech bossfight now has firecrackers and beheaded troops harassing you, meaning that you can't hide in the center mosque the entire fight and have to duck and weave through the outer arena pillars.
>>
>>376426920
Why are skeleton enemies always the most annoying?
