Prey in some ways is more hardcore than System Shock 2, in some ways it's also more streamlined but really it's not far off.

If you like SS I'd definitely recommend it, although if you're still on the fence just wait a bit until the crack comes out to try it. It's not perfect, doing a "save everyone" playthrough can be a major pain in the ass because every character is just as much at the mercy of the game world as you are while onscreen and the Nightmare is just a boring waste of 3 minutes, but it has some of the best level design I've seen in ages and really scratched that SS itch in a way I didn't think I'd experience again.

Well that's the thing that makes Prey really different from the rest of the genre, this "Immersive Sims" or FPS-RPG thing.

Both Deus Ex and System Shock 2 make you insanely weak at the start, by the second act you're extremely powerful and by endgame you're pretty much invincible. Prey does not give you that relief.

And that'll be welcome relief to the people who complain System Shock 2 becomes pretty lousy once you escape the Von Braun. I agree with that but to be honest I do enjoy those end chapters where you just get to smash the trash mobs that you once had to hide from.

To be fair, if they'd had a Johnny Cash soundtrack, I would've bought it on sale, and for what it's worth the game looked as if it had some form of heavy enemies (That giant monster at the end of the trailer), so it would've been a couple of steps above the average shlock. Regenerating health is a colossal red flag for me, though. At the very least I hope somebody picks up the space bounty hunter idea and runs with it.

literally the first enemy you encounter, the mimic is the opposite of a braindead enemy, and makes you have to think about every room you enter, and look at the environment around you to figure out how to defeat them, and the later enemies get fucking crazy and have very diverse movesets and many ways to be defeated. playing the demo doesn't count for a criticism of the entire game
