I've been playing pic related: the Saturn port of Cleopatra Fortune.

The game is fun, and the music is 10/10*, but there are certain stretches where the blocks fall so fast that I am not sure how you are supposed to get through them without chancing your way through with luck. These typically happen right at the bottlenecks of level 19, 29, and 38-39 - there are 99 levels in total, so 39 is as far as I have gotten.

*some of the best puzzle music ever right here

I also picked up recently a really strange but addicting puzzler that was budget-released on the PS1 called Builder's Block (Landmaker in PAL).

The game hides its quality with the blandest and most lazily-designed cover ever, and a back-of-the-case description where the marketer visibly gives up trying to explain how the game works halfway through, making up words and catch-phrases in the process that make no sense ("the ultimate dash-and-gash game!").

Despite that, the game itself takes some tries to understand what the hell is going on, but once you play around with the puzzle mode, which has a chill soundtrack where you try to snap blocks together to create buildings, the larger the better, and destroy these block clusters to reveal items and bonuses.

After playing that mode, where you don't have the pressure of a constantly ticking clock, you can try out the arcade mode, which as pic-related shows, is a colorful sprite-based puzzle/battle game against anime opponents.

The game is simultaneously hard and easy, because while you are sometimes lucky in block arrangements and can snap together huge buildings to make your opponent's area smaller, it is so easy to get a block you don't want (different colored blocks change their adjacent blocks), or panic and shoot something where it ought not to be. It's hard to explain, but I would really recommend it - the game is on the Japanese PSN but it's not expensive to get. For a puzzle game it has a lot of content - the arcade mode with 8 characters, plus 2 unlockable characters, an unlockable different arcade mode, 16 different puzzle campaigns, and a versus mode. It really surprised me since i didn't know anything about the game other than it being made by Taito.

I mean shit, if they REALLY, REALLY want to keep the pun, they could always up the limit to 48.

24 can be read as "Puyo", or at least something very similar.
Puyo always has a 24 character limit as a result, which is why so many characters appear in PPT in the story mode only and why Chronicles forces like 8 characters into a singleplayer-only gamemode for the sake of keeping a pun going.

Go into Endless Mode and just play that for a couple hours, try to survive as long as possible while just doing very easy and simple chains, maybe 3-4 steps, nothing crazy. When you feel like you have a pretty good grasp of playing at the higher speed levels (maybe lv40+) and still coming up with and nailing your short chains you can move on to going through tutorials for your longer chains and set ups.
First I'd try and get down how to build 5-6 step chains until they become second nature, at this point you should be good to go online and shit on some of the worse players for a while, keep playing until your rating settles in somewhere and keep doing your 5-6 chains while having to deal with garbage and attacks.
All this is really your fundation that you will keep refining forever and ever more, just getting really fucking good at 5-6 steps and being able to play very quickly will get you pretty far.
If you aren't sick of Puyo by then and want to take it more seriously you can learn shit like the GTR and more situational connectors that let you chain multiple combos together to get those crazy 10+ step chains you will often see pros you. Getting good at this kinda stuff will take an absolutely agonizing amount of effort and dedication and isn't at all necessary if you just want to shit on your average randos though. Definitely get your fundamentals up to 11/10 before you even think about attempting to learn these things

I would say Qix qualifies. If you are looking for Qix but even fucking better, check out the PS1 budget release, Qix Neo. It's a straight-up port of the Qix sequel Volfied (which had a sorta-port to the Genesis as Mega Qix), but this one is the real deal, plus a mind-boggling arrange mode that loops its 16 stages like 5 times or something like that (how far can u get? r u tuff enuff?).

Qix Neo is so fucking good - you wouldn't think a game that has almost no music and 80s graphics to be that good, but it is damn hard and damn exciting. The new "Qix" bosses in each stage are really a treat. The game is dirt cheap, so I totally recommend it.

Good recommendation. The Volfied port is really fun and I don't think I ever would have known this game existed if you hadn't brought it up.

The fact that Arrange Mode looks and sounds worse than the 1989 original is pretty embarrassing, though.

As someone who likes those games it's a series for complete babies. Chains mainly come down to reaction speed rather than setup. It's very easy.

yeah arrange mode looks kinda dumb, but its draw is the ludicrous amount of stages.

I bet the graphics update was kind of a "we need to show off some X-TREME 32bit graphics!"
"well uh just, uh, draw some new backgrounds and make the sprites look muddy I guess"

Glad you like it though! It was a real treat discovering it a few months ago.

No, you need to setup if you want to make 5+ chains unless you get lucky raising the pile.

I'm playing Puyopuyo Tetris and it keeps telling me I've unlocked skins and greetings and to "view them in the customise menu" but I've yet to find this menu, am I just retarded?
>>
>>376445004
Purple button on the main menu
>>
>>376445004
I think skins mean the designs you can assign to puyos or tetriminos and greeting are the avatars, because I can't find anything else that would could be meant by those words
>>
Is there any list of competitive puzzle games? I love this genre but there are so many good obscure ones. I thought Magical Drop was good until I found out about Money Idol Exchanger.
>>
>>376445275
They aren't in the customization menu in options
>>376445453
Nope, I've unlocked loads of "skins" but still have the same amount of Puyo and Tetrimino designs I started with

I found the greetings in online, theres an option to pick a greeting when matchmaking. Still can't find the skins though

Is Puyo Puyo Tetris the best puzzle game ever made?

So far the only flaw I can find is the uneccesary Fusion mode but it's like a small thing otherwise tagged onto a masterpiece.
>>
>>376452206
No. Tetris vs. Puyo is inherently unbalanced, several great modes like Fever are missing and the 24 limit means some of Puyo's best established characters got left out in favor of five shitty Tetris OCs.
Still good, though.
>>
>>376449808
It wasnt as good as the snes one though

Not as bad as Puyo~n at least
>>
>>376452330
>Tetris vs. Puyo is inherently unbalanced

Which one is better?

I assume its tetris because the trash in tetris is way less invasive than the trash in puyo
>>
>>376452330
So what is the best puzzle game.

And do you think that tetris vs. puyo puyo would be more balanced if puyo had the instant drop like tetris has?
>>
>>376452652

Tetris is better. Granted, if you get a good enough Puyo Puyo player, they can make a killer combo that will destroy you instantly; but overall Tetris is the easier and more effective way to defeat your opponent.
>>
>>376452206
Puyo Puyo on its own is the second most famous puzzle video game series ever. Tetris being #1. Make a game with both and you get absolute mayhem.
>>
>>376452631
>low amount of attack, hurt, counter animations
This bugs me so much.
>>
>>376452652
Yeah, Tetris. Puyo players DO definitely have some ways of dealing with Tetris, but if we're talk completely perfect, frame-perfect, objective play here? Tetris would always win due to have fast you can set everything up compared to Puyo.
>>376452683
Honestly? No. I think giving Puyo fast drop would give us the exact opposite problem; high level puyo players could set up massive 5-6 chains before the tetris players could get off more than a t-spin or two.

As for the best, I'd have to say probably 20th from a gameplay standpoint, even if it still suffers from the 24 limit. TTGM3 is the best tetris game, thougj

Welcome to my world except I suck at Tetris.

Puyo you can afford to dump non matching colours to one side while focusing on a chain. Start off trying to create a chain from the first two and focus on that chain while dumping to the side.

On paper id imagine puyo is easier to improve in than tetris.

They aren't preventing it, that's just how the license arrangement works because The Tetris Company is full of retards. For unbelievably draconian reasons, TTC licenses out exclusive rights to Tetris to companies one at a time for several years at a time by region. In the west, Ubisoft has had a lockdown for the past few years and EA was before that, which is why we haven't actually had a good Tetris game in close to a decade. Thankfully Sega has the rights in Japan, but I don't doubt it took some serious mountain moving to get PPT released outside.

>>
>>376465265
Dr. Mario and Puyo are completely different.
I'd hardly make a comparison besides the fact that the pills drop in 2 colors like in Puyo. That's about it.

Viruses need to be cleared by matching 4 in a straight line, as opposed to puyo which can be any number 4 or greater that are touching.
There isn't any gravity in Mario until the pills break, unlike in Puyo where there is always gravity.
So far as I can tell, Dr. Mario isn't about setting up chains either. Just clearing viruses, which is a much different game than puyo.

>>
>>376467628
This so much. It really doesn't take much to learn basic patterns, and as you practice more you naturally stop thinking about them and just do them out of habit. Playing blindly and just hoping that you'll get better or discover adequate strategies on your own is wasting all the time and effort that players have put into perfecting those techniques over the years.
>>
>>376467986
So what I've been doing is doing endless Puyo, then throwing down a 5 or 6 chain of just sandwiches on the bottom row, trying to make sure my chain doesn't get eaten with the puyos that end up on top (pretty easy with sandwich) and then set it off.
Rinse and repeat.
I'm trying to get really fast at identifying what puyos are going to work with making a sandwich (breaking away from purely 211 for example, and creating something fucky like pic related) so that I don't have to worry about that in a match.
I've done that with stairs so it's pretty easy to make stairs, and then I'll do that with GTR. Then I'll toss it all together and hopefully be able to start working on my second floor (if I even need to).
Does this sound like a good way to practice?

yeah, the little extra features make me want to pick up a Japanese copy, though that would mean having to finally figure out how to mod my PS1 or PS2. You also get that nice semi-animated intro, and I'm a sucker for animated intros.

And hey who doesn't love a lady in white... I've got a thing for Druaga's Ki as well.

Druaga is one of the games that inspired Legend of Zelda, as it's one of the first action-adventure RPG-type games. Each floor of the tower out of 60 has monsters and a puzzle condition to reveal the treasure - and most of the treasures are required to beat the game (a small number, like 4 or 5, are fake or trap treasures that hurt or kill you). It's kinda like pacman with an RPG twist (being a Namco game).

The actual 1984 original is extremely dated, but it did get a remake for the PC Engine that's one of my favorite games - and it has an English translation patch so it's very approachable.

Swap is the best mode, followed by VS as long as both players are playing either Puyo or Tetris followed by Party.
Fusion fucking sucks but thankfully you don't need to play it much to finish the story mode.
>>
>>376481165
You'll have to get used to both, but if you wanna get good at online vs, get used to one and stick with it.
Tetris is overall better if you're good at it, but a good puyo player can knock enemies out in one good chain. Either way it's both about how fast you can build your board, and once you become a robot you'll live to see your name up on the regional tops.

I went from not being able to purposely pull off chains to getting kinda good at 3-4 chains and I'm still getting my ass kicked in chapter 4. I can't remember who I'm fighting but it's a puyo vs. tetris and this fucker just wipes the floor with me. I'm trying to set up chains and even going as fast as possible he slams power ups and garbage before I can actually pull it off. Then I get nervous and start haphazardly dropping puyo and restart. I know I can get better but goddamn sometimes this feels really unbalanced. Or I just suck shit, which is probably the case.
Also I feel like I'm missing something with tetris perfect clears. I can pull off the set up no problem but then I get pieces I can't do shit with and just waste time. I only pull it off like 1/10 times. I feel like such a brainlet.
