Makoto was fine, but she's pretty goddamn boring in her confidant. I get that they wanted to showcase what an upstanding person she is, but Eiko didn't even feel like she was even Makoto's friend. The whole thing felt like she just forced her way into a random slut's life to save her from her own stupidity. It feels so fucking weird and it's something that no human would ever do. Nobody's about to get involved with some random bitch that's just from the same school.

Why not just make the confidant about getting Makoto to be less of a robot? They had something going for that first part of the confidant.

Kaneshiro was from Makoto blackmail then under threat, Futaba was a personal request that wasn't to help society but to save them, Okumura was to save Haru and pressure from the polls, Sae was explicitly to save their own ass plus forced by Akechi, and they were also under threat of death if they didn't take care of Shido. They didn't go out of their way to shape society so much as save their own ass for a majority of the game.

I don't get how that's a criticism, but I had the thoughts of where the game would go while playing it because they start in media res. The OP is disappointing enough because it's way more rebellious and fun than the game is (like Yusuke doing grafitti), but everything about the casino and interrogation made me think the Phantom Thieves were a confident, big deal. They rub your face in how flashy Joker is being, in front of what seems to be all these witnesses, but turns out those aren't real but the police are.

There's also the Daybreakers anime that gave expecations on how involved the group got, and then they turned that into a sidequest with like 10 lines in the actual game and zero real life involvement.
