Instead of having consistent fully dyunamic lighting they went with the shitty middleground.
Some lighting looks brilliant and casts shadows, some is static and doesn't.
Even your flashlight doesn't cast shadows, a feature which was patched into Half-Life 2 around 2006.

It runs a whole lot better than most AAA titles though, that's the thing. And even if it's not a technical marvel, art direction is pretty much spot on (that said, I don't really like most creature designs) so it looks pretty impressive.

Most of the environment is static, but there's a lot of enemies and particles flying around. The game never skips a beat though.

This may seem like a normal thing and nothing to be excited about, but consider other console ports and how they run. Very ugly games like Automata have a lot of trouble.

I actually kinda dig that. Everything seems very mundane, which means I shit my fucking britches when the coffee mug tries to slap my dick. The whole place doesn't feel like a map that was built to be a horror game map, it feels like it's just a regular future space station and then shit went down. I usually hate horror games, but I really like this one because it builds tension really well without ever relying on the monster just looking horrifying or having jumpscares. You could argue that the mimics are jumpscares I guess, but the fact that if you're aware enough they'll never get you makes me feel like they're fair. And of course if you're constantly looking for them you end up deaf and half blind, constantly on edge.

I like this game, it's absolutely a worthy successor to system shock. Ever since bioshock 1 (despite the game being fine) I've been endlessly disappointing that they're just NOT the right kinda Shock that I want.

Eehhh at times i'll admit crysis 2 does look better in some regards,but nah for the most part id say doom (2017) looks a bit better for the most part,also the problem with that version of cryengine 3 back then,is a lot of the optimizations were rushed,so sadly till this day we still have a few bugs with the animations and the framerate,even on like my 970 SSC it still can easily drop down 40FPS at times,which lets be honest is kind of ridiculous anymore,as much i love crysis 2,it has some issues with the engine even if it is a technical marvel.

Wrong in the optimization part,most of the optimizations were already there back in the ID tech 5 days,all the engineers from crytek did is introduce a lot of shaders that john carmack basically avoided in ID tech 5,now i guess that's not say that the crytek guys did no improvements on the performance level,i mean yeah they did help out a bit with stuff like gpu accelerated particle effects,but the crytek guys mainly introduced better shaders.

Its the devs of dishonored. Its a mix, sometimes you have smaller hallways between connected rooms, but its very open level design, with ventilation, things hidden above the ceiling, things behind locked areas and you have to use creative ways of getting around. Like morphing into a binder and sliding under a door, or using the goo gun to climb walls. Stuff like that.

Elaborating, it never feels big for bigs sake, lots of items hidden that you can upgrade your stats with EVERYWHERE.

Its explore as much as you want.

Its not like Bioshock where its backtracking taht's mandatory. Its more like you have side tasks that you can do if you choose or not, and explore at your leisure. Exploring early gets you guns, items, etc. that you may not normally find until much later.

Everything is useful ebcause you can recycle anything for materials and make what you want. Ammo, guns, medkits; if you have the mats.

The only bad thing in that image is that light isn't being cast from actual light sources. Lighting goes a hell of a long way to making a game look good.
