It has the potential to. A company could, for instance, sign an exclusivity deal with Microsoft thus not allowing Sony and Nintendo consoles to play online, and they could probably get away with it since ISPs are a cartel, but that's all hypothetical of course.

>>
>>376408025
yes. because then Riot for example could pay for ISP to give a higher priority to League of Legends over Dota or other MOBA games, which could possibly mean less latency for LoL but more for competing MOBA games.

Same can be done with Steam/Origin/GoG. Gaben can pay to slow down Origin and speed up Steam.
>>
>>376408025
yes. Either by locking the "gamer ping" behind a 30$ extra, or simply blocking Steam from the standard package and also asking for a 30$ per month to just connect.
Also forget non DRM gaming platform, they would work on an IP whitelist.

>>
>>376408103
It would mean ISPs and corporations could charge more or less against whoever they want. And considering that ISPs operate in monopolies, this would be ruinous for consumers.

So in example instead of paying a monthly bill for your internet, you would pay for your internet, as well as having to pay more if you wanted faster speeds for certain websites, and faster speeds for games, or certain games, better speeds during peak hours, ect

It basically lets ISPs discriminate on their networks on who gets what. It also lets ISPs choke the fuck out of corporations as well.

Netflix not playing nice with an ISP? Well then they could force Netflix to pay insane costs just to use the ISPs network. Considering ISPs work in monopolies, particularly in the US, you have no choice here as a consumer and those costs would fall back on you.
>>
>>376408772

So you either pay a premium for a "Neutral" net, or get an internet funded by some corporation where its content is sped up but competitors content is slowed down. thats how the free market will react.

>If your ISP costs too much, just get a different one.
There's only one choice for broadband where I live.

Also its not an issue of cost. If my ISP decides that they're going to have different tiers of connection that different sites or online services would have to pay it could essentially shut down competitors. It will also be even harder for new players to compete against the established businesses.

Steam for instance is big enough they could probably pay for paid prioritization, but GoG probably wouldn't be.
Not to mention if the ISP decides to only sell a limited number you could face a situation where Microsoft buys that up and you're then stuck with the Windows Store as the only option even if you avoid 10 S.
>>
>>376408745

lil late for that, the "no we're actually fucked" turning point was in like 2015 iirc
>>
>>376408667
Some places only offer one ISP option. Currently, people that subscribe to their service don't have any other options in terms of pricing, but they at least have uninhibited access to the whole internet. Without net neutrality, those same people will not only have zero options when it comes to pricing, they'll have zero choices when it comes to what internet access "package" they will receive. Sounds like less freedom to me, almost like being forced to buy into one universal healthcare provider.

Mergers is the big reasons. But also agreements between different IPS to not compete against each other. So you only see 1 or 2 ISP per area when other countries has 10 or more. So not only are we in the US pay more but we also get less. When a new ISP does pop up the big guys go out of it's way to lobby it out of existance. Just read up on Google Fiber and all the weird things they have to deal with to try to be a provider.

>Have RCN and paying $60
>Could upgrade to 330 Mbps for an extra $20

Imagine I'm your ISP, and for some reason I don't like 4Chan. Maybe it's one of my competitors, or Facebook is paying me a lot of money to fuck with them. I could block your access to 4Chan entirely, or I could make your connection speeds painfully slow to discourage you from using it. Net neutrality is intended to prevent companies from doing shitty things like this.
>>
>>376409765
It is 100% illegal but since it's all informal they either can't or won't prosecute
>>
>>376408667
>government regulation is bad even when it ensures that everyone is able to access all data on the internet at the same speed, without bullshit throttling and discrimination against things your ISP doesn't like

maybe you just like giving up your extra money and freedoms to corporate overlords? is that a fetish I'm not aware of?
>>
>>376409448
net neutrality means that you pay to access the enternet as a whole, and can use that access to reach any IP you like.
Without it, ISP can decide to cut the content of what you can access for the money you pay. Typically you'd get a "standard pack" to go on facebook, twitter, amazon, then a "video pack" where you may more to access streaming sites, and another "gaming pack" to access game sites with a decent ping.
It's not just fear fanfics, ISP have tried to pass just that over the past years now. Some even tried to do it illegally, by reducing the bandwidth allocated to streaming sites if you didn't pay for their deluxe package (that only includes more hardware)

All meme.

Everything they understand is skin deep at most.
>>
>>376408025
Basically, yes. Without net neutrality, ISPs can charge a premium to carry what they identify as "gamer packets", or gaming streams

Such as the case of Time Warner Cable being sued for refusing to provide their basic service unless Riot games paid them an extra fee. Customers playing League of Legends got inexplicable spikes in ping and bottlenecks, simply because TWC was refusing to lift a finger and treat LoL traffic like everyone else's until Riot paid extra. TWC knew that Riot was entirely dependent on the internet for their business, hence them charging a "just because" fee.

Cable companies know that the internet is eating away at their marketshare, and they want to gatekeep it the same way they gatekeep cable television. Net neutrality ensures that internet is treated like a utility, where customers pay for speed and bandwidth.
>>
>>376409765
And whose going to stop them? Those politicians who get paid to support them?

ISPs are utter fucking cancer. But at the same time government control of it would also be fucking cancer.

Its a lose-lose no matter what you do.

During the 90's big companies where able to legally make it so internet isn't the same as phones or tv lines. And so they made it so they didn't have to provide to everyone. Not only that but when there were a few smaller companies providing internet services they all started to merge so you got even less choices over time. And it's worse how every president put people in charge of the FCC that were connected to the those big corporations like Version and Comcast.

The government doesn't need to control the internet. All they need to do is pass down basic rules that ISPs have to adhere to. Super simple things that everyone can agree on, such as; don't sell out your consumer's browsing habits, don't favor certain content over others, and monopolistic practices will not be tolerated.

You're severely underestimating space if you think putting more money into NASA is going to do anything. Until some miraculous breakthrough in physics occurs that makes near lightspeed travel a safe possibility there's no way we can even reach the nearest star, much less the nearest potential livable planet. Absolutely. There is no reason for the ISPs to have taken the FCC to court and fought this hard and spent this much money to inact their will, unless they plan to capitalize the shit out of it. Ajit Pai's only fucking defense against this is "well that's just hypothetical tho", like the companies have fought tooth and nail to put themselves in this position just because, no worries, they won't fuck over one of the greatest creations in human history so they can squeeze money out of every company they feel like, no worries lol, hasn't happened yet with all these regulations stopping it from happening that will now be gone, no worries LMAO, it's not like he previously worked for Verizon and stands to make a huge profit off this himself, no FUCKING worries.

It's going to absolutely ruin innovation on the internet. It's going to neuter this beautiful accidental creation into a deliciously profitable cable 2.0.

This would make sense if there was a wide variety of ISP choice.

As it is, some people have no choice at all. In an ideal world you'd remove the regulation and let people pick and choose, but in a world where there's such limited ISP choice all you're doing is enabling a monopoly.

It could, in theory.

The problem with all this bullshit isn't really net neutrality per se, it's that ISPs have, by and large, been moving into areas that don't involve the providing of internet services and are brushing up against conflicts of interest.

tl;dr: if you mandate the split of service providers from content providers this problem will cease to exist.

Yep. Exactly. If people had at minimum a choice between like five or six different providers, you'd end up with free market competition in a deregulated environment.

I think it probably comes from local culture. Very left leaning city, so the only people who are going to cry out that they're vegans are going to be the insufferable pricks who want attention while the people that aren't terrible people just get on with their lives. Extremes breed opposite extremes, but neutrality does the same with people acting as far out as they can for the attention they believe isn't being given to their cause, even though the neutrality is bred from a quiet acceptance of "do your own shit man".

Highly doubtful. Overpopulation stops being an issue as countries develop more, even China's birthrate has rapidly declined since the 80's and is only now starting to pick back up. Developing said countries would be easy enough but would go against the ideals of capitalism so it doesn't get done. Ironically at the same time something on the scale of colonizing another planet would require capitalism to be thrown out the window, at least temporarily, but no one seems to give a shit because of euphoric reasons.

What stops people from getting a VPN or using TOR to mantain net neutrality? Isn't the content of the data encrypted in that case, making it impossible to discriminate?

The problem isn't necessarily overpopulation, but what a population consumes. If we could figure out ways to live more sustainable, the Earth could easily accommodate more people. Worst case, we may end up having Japan's population problem.

you already pay for their healthcare, its called insurance. The money you pay to the insurance company doesnt go in a little fund for you, its spent by the company on care/expenses/wages for other people and then when you get sick those other peoples payments help cover you.

Paying for other people's healthcare is literally the only system that works and is used by 100% of first world countries in some form.

>HOW THE FUCK IS GOING TO THE DOCTOR GOING TO HELP THEM LOSE WEIGHT?
(yeah, I took out "for a cold" because you're being a little baby - Fight me)

Because part of being a doctor is patient care.

Part of patient care is ensuring/encouraging healthy weight and lifestyle choices.

Part of patient care is assisting a patient who is having health issues, which obesity is, with resolving those issue.

Part of patient care is that they can do so by helping the patient take classes offered by the hospital/medical program to teach the patient how to live a healthier lifestyle in affordable/time managed ways.

Part of patient care also includes determining if there are compounded medical reasons for the obesity, drug reactions/interactions, etc.

Part of all that patient care is to also offer resolution assistance (such as various form of surgical treatment) should the obesity NOT be just "poor lifestyle choices", and/or if further treatment beyond healthy diet and regular exercise is required to treat their patient.

>before recently, healthy people could pool their own money to reduce costs

Thats true to some extent, but with a few of caveats. Number one is that even if the pool is smaller it is notable that you were still paying for other peoples healthcare. Even in the most unregulated version of an insurance system, it is integral to the very concept itself that you are paying for other people. You can make distinctions about sicker and poorer or whatever but when all is said and done there is no system where you wont pay for someone else's healthcare and they dont pay for yours.

Secondly there were still tons and tons of sick people in the insurance pool, it's just that they got sick after they entered. Sure those with dreaded pre-existing conditions couldn't get help (which is kind of fucked in and of itself but thats a different conversation) but you personally helped pay for plenty of intense very expensive surgeries on very sick people

Thirdly, insurance companies were and still are regarded as some of the most unscrupulous organizations on the planet and their profit margins show it. Theres nothing wrong with an industry making a healthy profit, but when that same industry regularly refuses service to its own paying customers (just about everyone has a story of an insurance company refusing to cover something or passing on an insane amount of hte cost to you directly), while still collecting their checks and making record profits, thats pretty bad and might be a sign that some regulation is in order

This is exactly it. The bigger ISP providers in some other countries (I think India was one of major ones) were trying to push laws to increase barriers to entry so that they could form US-esque cartels. They said that having more than two ISPs lowers efficiency and confuses consumers or some shit because a smaller ISP came in with more consumer friendly practices and stole loads of their users.

No. All it would realisitcally do is make companies play favorites.. which they already do anyway.

People think they have true anonymity on the internet. They don't. They've been giving away their entire online history and will continue to do so. They actually believe the government isn't getting the same data from Windows out of all other operating systems. They're phones can be globally located at all times. You literally can't turn GPS off. You can't. You'd hace to remove it which would brick the phone. Shopping habits. Eating habits. All of these things are kept track of. They think this a fucking Bond film. They know the locks to the secret doors. Problem is those doors don't fucking exist. Oh but they have a VPN... which logs all of their information and can't even run as a company with out government involvement.. but proxies.. which never did what people thought they did but that's OK. What's really funny is they'll rely on the but hackers fallback which is dumb because every hacker that has done something of actual value has been caught. Every single one. 80% of these types of people literally don't have friends. So they didn't get snitched on.. which leaves them being found and they're really good at not being found.. yet they are.

Just like all other form of politics the people screaming about the bad generally have no fucking clue what they're talking about. It's gonna happen other countries already have or will adopt it. Get over it. This is a world were data is worth more than the finest diamonds. You aren't off the radar. You can't be. That isn't how life works in 2017. But you'll believe you can because freedom or whatever else.. ignoring the fact that nothing in life is free no matter what it is so pay up or kill yourself. Because that's the only way out.

Literally nothing to do with net neutrality. Privacy is an equally important, but separate matter entirely.

I appreciate you looking at things openly while still defending your point in our argument.

Hey buddy I think you've got the wrong door. The private information thread is two doors down.
>>
>>376411795
wouldn't that take tens of millions of years though

Life?
Probably, but healing the atmosphere not so much.

>look at this perfectly fine 6-lane road that can fit everyone
>nope, everyone will have to use that 1-lane barely maintained road unless they pay $50 extra
>but wait, that car you're driving is not manufactured by one of our sponsors
>guess that's another $50 you have to pay buddy
>>
So what are the arguments FOR Net Neutrality?
>>
>>376419173
I want to make more money, goyim.

Its interesting to see how the cult of personality around him has grown. He's kinda like Ceaser in New Vegas. No one cares what he does so long as he's the one doing it.

They think giving government officials broad power over communication will make the internet a better place, lol.

4chan is the direct result of market freedom. reddit is the direct result of a system that "ensures neutrality".

>look at this perfectly fine 6-lane road that can fit everyone
>that can fit everyone

Ha ha ha; where the fuck do you live.
And I wish I paid $100 for roads, anon.
>>

Basically the argument is:

Money > Desires of individuals.

Doesn't matter though. The wild west days of the internet couldn't last forever

>how do I into analogies help
>>
>>376419173
Do you like the fact that you can access and shitpost on 4chan without paying extra to your ISP on top of paying for your internet subsciption? Then you love Net Neutrality.
>>
>>376419526

When you analogy is inaccurate on one hand and actually better than our current situation on the other it's a pretty shit analogy.

It's a bogey man that isn't half as awful as people make it out and would actually benefit the consumer but some full blown retard on YouTube (which receives millions and millions from Cable/Internet providers) or a late-night show which is owned and ran by a tv company told them it's bad.. meanwhile the tv companies are the ones that want to do it... huh.. isn't that odd. It's almost like those really bad people whom could literally censor any form of bad criticism aren't worried about it. Could it be that.. It's not really that bad? No. It has to be greedy and evil.

You don't know what net-neutrality is. Dont get your answers from a personality. Look it up. Find the text. It's free to read. Actually read it.

You're focused on shit that doesn't matter meanwhile they're passing legislation that actually effects us all in a legitimate way. But you keep worrying about them making you pay for fourchins dot org.

>They think giving government officials broad power over communication will make the internet a better place, lol.
just saying that means you have no concept of how the internet functions and what is even being talked about. Telling ISP's they cant pay favorites for profit doesn't somehow put the content and function of the internet under the control of congress.

>would actually benefit the consumer
Fuck off Time Whiner

What company gives your your mobile data? They're not on our premium so they get 56k upload speed. If they, and eventually you pay a premium you get 72k, which is a thing we just made up. Premium and get more.
>>
Guys, I know how we can fix everything. We just need to elect representatives that are even MORE corrupt than the current ones, who'll try to get more money out of lobbyist bribes. Eventually, it'll be so costly they'll either take big losses or stop all together
