Not OP, but back when the DotA2 beta was new, I had gotten into it and had an inventory of maybe $20 worth of items. I wasn't crazy into the game, or steam that much. I'm tech savvy, a geek, whatever you want to call it. I didn't download any dodgy software, i wasn't looking to buy any shit online, wasn't trying to bet, never tried to sell items for real money. nothing like that. I also didn't have many steam friends and any randoms that sent me a request were usually ignored.

About a few months after playing, I stopped for quite a while. i think maybe a year or so later I logged back in to play again. To my surprise my inventory had been cleaned out. I was still fairly new to the whole steam market at this time so wasn't sure what happened and thought it may have been a bug from DotA2 coming out of beta, or something similar. I waited about a week and it didn't "fix" so i had a look around online and realized it wasn't a bug.

My first thought was "oh hey, my good friend used my account one time, maybe he took them." if he did take them, it wasn't malicious like "heh kid got ur shit lol haxed!" but he said he didn't and hadn't logged into my account since I gave him permission to. So I was like okay this is getting weird... I figured out how to check my trade history and there was a trade of all my items to some random account. i went on that accounts profile and some person was saying on it "hey I didn't hack your accounts or steal your items, if you check my inventory I have nothing and mine have been taken to" and his profile was littered with comments like "fuck u hacker gimme back items!"
so after seeing this I was like what the fuck and messaged steam support. About a day later they replied saying they had restored my inventory but in future i should take more care of my personal details and gave me a typical rundown on internet safety. I sent another email back saying thanks and also stating that I knew it was 100% not my fault
>>

it wasn't him that took the items it was a random accoutn that was hacked, had the items traded to it, then traded from that random account to another.

>this is your last (you)
YOU CAN'T CUT ME OFF MAN! YOU'RE FUCKING KILLING ME!
>>
>>376410393
No, you're likely lonely for thinking that giving away your password to a computer program for video games is some automatically some moronic issue. when i know the passwords to like 8 of his accounts on different games from the past 20 years. He is like a brother to me as we've known each other that long. It just wouldn't happen. I can and do trust him with more than my $20 in-game item inventory, you fucking friendless retard.

Also, another thing worth noting is that since the steam guard and mobile thing were implemented, this hasn't happened since. Not only that, but my friend has logged onto my account recently, after I texted him my steam mobile guard code. I have an inventory of maybe a $100-$200 of tradable shit in multiple games now and nothing has gone missing.
>>
>>376410409

>>376410671
Like, I get it's a funny joke.

But I'm just telling you he 100% had nothing to do with it. a years time from now I'll post the same story and omit the part about my friend so that I can get a real discussion on it though, don't worry. Just be dismissive like the steam support jews and become what you hate. not my issue.
>>
>>376410253

Your friend either gave away your password or it was something basic.
>>
>>376409770
Most probable explanation is using the same password in multiple places and the account details leaking from one of those sites.
>>
>>376411158
Not basic. He didn't give it away. He only used my account once and it was to play dawn of war 2 the last stand. He didn't use betting sites/trading sites, doesn't today. I know what you guys mean, like he entered it in some dodgy steannconnunity(dot)combaloo electricboogaloo or a dodgy betting site, or a dodgy trading site etc. I've got those scammer messages before, we both have, we've both been using computers long enough to spot that shit from a mile away and not fall for it. He flat out did not do it and I understand where you are all coming from, because at first I assumed the same thing as there was no other explanation. But after speaking to him, it was very clear he didn't. This isn't some teenager friendship. this is like best-man at each others wedding. He moved to a different country recently and we are still in contact everyday. I understand what you guys are saying, but it's not what happened.
>>
>>376411247
I am guilty of doing that, but my steam password was different, also more complex, because at the time of using it I was paranoid about using my card online so i made it a different password.
>>
>>376411593
Maybe he was infected by a keylogger when logging into your account
>>
>>376410832
>friend takes advantage of you
>people on /v/ try to warn you
>you start throwing a bitchfit and crying

You're like a beaten housewife who tells everyone her husband "isn't like that" and "he loves me deep down". Learn to stand up for yourself you spineless cuck
>>
>>376411796
Actually... I never thought of that (stupidly) and I think that's the most likely thing at the moment. I know for fact it wasn't me who had it on my PC, as I virus scanned and all that and I'm too many Computer big smarts to let shit like that onto my PC. Though at the same time, I feel the same about my friend. He's not the type of person who would have that software on his PC, though it's believable and the most likely scenario.

I'm standing up for myself right now by telling all you guys you aren't right. I love /v/ but the information you have is twisted because you dont understand how close me and my friend are. But yes, i know I sound like a cucked housewife.

The thing that caught my attention the most, was that it was during my hiatus from steam. I figured "well if I knew how to "hack" other peoples steam accounts, id do it to accounts that aren't in use so when/if they find out, it's hopefully too late" This was also like months after my friend had logged into my account. not sure if that makes any difference to your perceptions.

>>376412043
It's pretty unlikely that his friend did anything with malicious intent considering the rest of his story. If there were multiple people who got their stuff stolen the same way, then that friend of his would've had to have done the same thing with multiple other people. Another alternative would be him selling the account details to people who do that stuff, but that's just as unlikely.

If using the same password in multiple places and it leaking from one of those places is ruled out, the next most likely scenarios are phishing sites and then keyloggers. Phishing sites can be quite clever sometimes by actually redirecting you to the real site after getting your login, making you think you just typed your password wrong, and leaving no lasting impression of having your details stolen. With keyloggers, you would often have things other than your steam stuff stolen, which makes it a bit less likely, but still possible.
>>
>>376412748
I have irl friends too, they don't steal my shit though and if they did I'd drop them like a hot potato. You clearly just have no respect for yourself
>>
>>376412672

no i'm omitting the piece of story, because there are too many autistic teenagers on this board to read that it happened to multiple other accounts from the rest of the world, meaning that my friend is apparently running some steam scam syndicate
>>376412824
yeah same goes with my mate.
>>
>>376413090
That's true but Steam is pretty damn retard proof. Like holy shit it's so retard proof that I consider it jumping through hoops to do basic functions like selling stuff on the Steam marketplace.

Maybe it's because I played Runescape in 2004 where there was no safety nets at all but Steam to me has so much safety nets that I'm surprised that it isn't retard proof
>>

Well that's what I'm thinking now, but it still seems unlikely, he's too smart to accidentally download that shit. We both went through similar shit in the WC3 days when we had someone in our clan give us a "program he made" for voice chat, which also doubled as a keylogger. This was when we were like 12. we're 25 now. So it's not like we are normies and this shit is foreign ground to us.

and again, this was before the steam guard/mobile/email authentications and shit.
>>
Do people usually just store their credit card details on Steam? I remember that being a big deal when the bug happened where you got logged into a random account
