He'd probably have a lot of issues about being unwanted or discarded. Nobody believing his innocence, branding him as a criminal for trying to be a good person, and his own parents approving him being sent away would damage any teenager. I could see him being terrified that with one wrong move, one he thinks to be natural and just, all of his new friends and confidants might shut him out and send him away again.

If not just the Velvet Room, maybe all of the city as a prison, the people he knows as flighty, restless visitors, and his treasure room as a solitary confinement cell.
