You don't want art direction to high or you delve into shitty indie game territory. You don't want story over gameplay or you get a shitty walking simulator.

Do you know why Platinum action games are so highly praised? It's because of the animation, visual qeues and sound design during combat, not the raw mechanics.
Visuals contribute a huge amount to how a enjoyable a game can be.
