No not really, apart from the lack of singleplayer there was a complex armour system where you had to work your sword into the chinks of armour before they gutted it, crossbows had active reloading making it a risk vs reward factor when considering reloading the crossbow and hitting people with axes and hammers meant that you had to actually contact them with the head instead of Mount and Blade where you can be skullfucking the enemy but still hit them with the handle of the hammer doing full damage.

S2 Games bet was that given how huge DOTA was and how "cheap" the game was being sold initially it would help them boost the sales, and LoL was... shit.

LoL was FREE though. And kinda fun, below all that SHIT EVERYTHING it had on release. People doesn't remember how truly and for real shit it was.

But HoN had something that LoL didn't had, other than a price tag: entry barrier and a super toxic community. If HoN was made F2P from the beginning and sold cosmetics we wouldn't have LoL the monster they kept developing today because HoN was right off the bat, and still is, superior in engine and heroes to LoL even with Tencent behind. It was just good from the start.

But S2 Games were very shortsighted. Still it's playable and fun, it's just not as big.

HoN's main failure was lack of outreach. If you're not constantly getting newblood to join your game, you're going to frustrate anyone who doesn't have the time or dedication to go professional with it.

It's how most of the games in this thread died. The playerbase just wasn't big enough to start growing on its own. LoL, DotA2, and, let's say, Overwatch all had big communities to start with, and they keep attracting in more players, which means more fanart, which means more people interested in the game, which means more players.

Basically, you can tell if an online game is going to be successful by the amount of fanart (porn) it gets.

It always looked like brown and bloom shit, it had a virulently obnoxious community that spent half the time shitting on new players and the other half shitting on league, it had a price tag and their first big tournament was held in a poorly lit basketball court and got a maximum of 10k viewers. Not to mention that Maliken and the devs were massive assholes and not only were outright hostile to the community, they also did that hugely kiky thing of reducing the price of the game for a week before making it go f2p just cause they wanted a quick buck. It never had any chance.

It was big enough to sustain it's community and it's esport scene without having to force the developers to pump millions of dollars into it for several years for anyone to even be remotely interesting in competing it it. The basketball tournament was not even close to it's first one, considering that happened well after the game was already dead.

Also, the gameplay easily outshined every negative about that game, and were it better managed, it would still be alive and well today.

After the initial few weeks, there was only about one thread every 3 months going "w-w-why are you p-p-playing l-lol when t-this is s-s-superior" and every forum post "lmao fuck lol and riot we are so much better". I also had one retard friend who kept harking it (he was the asshole of the group, go figure) and I finally decided to play with him when it went free for a week and I found it to be ugly, clunky and the gameplay to be inferior to fucking dota allstars. Both MAG and Chromehounds of the seventh gen era need replacement games.

Really the only online games I can think of that there are not alternatives of. At least of games I played that I liked. I have tried lots of games that are meant to be similar but nothing is even close. MAG had large combat and team based squads down perfect. Chromehounds had squad based mech building and online map conquest pretty much exactly how it should be.

Im just stopping by to say that HoN engine (not sure about the name), being pretty much a polished carbon copy of W3 eng, is up to this day the best possible engine for any MOBA, greatly shitting on LoL's, or Source 2.
HoN was the first to do "vector skills" with the chipper ultimate, and soon it was copied to LoL (not sure if to dota 2, but i guess so).
On a technical and creative side, HoN was extremely better than any competitors. It was meh on balance, specially on the pro level(i remember people being super butthurt about silhouette having a super high skill cap), and completely sucked at marketing.

I started playing HoN in 2012, agter 2.0 was implemented. This is more or less what happened.

All the awful heroes that were on HoN and were redesigned were the Icefrog clones of DOTA

Thing is they didn't want to evolve the game and the super boring 3 passive characters were the ones that made it into DOTA2. IIRC after they went outside S2 they released Parasite, and the rest is history.

All the fun and interesting fast paced characters were post Icefrog. DOTA2 is a remake of DOTA1 and it's just slow and boring.

If anyone with a critical attitude played both you can definitely agree that HoN characters and pacing is much better than DOTA2 because HoN was trying to evolve and become a true DOTA sequel. But the DOTA name by itself is a brand and has recognition, and Valve knew this well. Icefrog Team wanted to remake DOTA1 anyways, so the opportunity was made in heaven for them.

With a giant like Valve behind DOTA2 it ws building hype by itself. But hype can get you only so much along the road. DOTA1 was clunky and slow because it was almost a prototype of a genre. Copypasting it just made most people realize it's not as fun as the other counterparts.

LoL on the other hand was on their own business and making what they wanted to; in their words, "a true evolution of the genre". They succeeded big time.

Paragon was just a massive ammount of plinko related stuff. Also there was an ascention thing that was their attemp at copying the compendium. I don't play dota2 so I can't tell exactly what are the similarities.
The de facto replacement for the war effort is the mastery system. Pretty big to explain briefly but it basicaly lets you grind heroes for rewards, including a bit of gold.

Combining the speed of a ganker, tankiness and stuns of a proper initiator and the pursuing power of a berserking hell galloping beast.

I loved that the E was an ammo based skillshot and the axes actually stick in the enemy's body. Also they deal decent damage over the fact that they slow, and then Moraxus rams them and pounds the enemy to the ground. Reflect damage with his Tower Shield was so satisfying when timed right. Holy fuck he does deal damage.

And somehow it's not overdesigned or broken. Certainly strong, though.
