This might be bait but it's really apples to oranges. Banjo Kazooie and Mario 64 both had different, very deliberate design decisions. It's like comparing DKC to SMW. Sure, DKC is "slower" than SMW, is less technical, but these were all for good reasons. BK focused more on exploring, and Super Mario 64 is more focused on objectives. Notice that even BK, that has smaller worlds than BT, has much larger worlds by at least a factor of 2 than SM64? Notice that the puzzles in BK are a lot less technical and require a lot more thinking than Mario 64 puzzles?
Your same logic can be applies to Super Mario 64.

Yeah I never really liked it either, even as a kid.

Then again, I found Mario 64 to be lackluster as well. 3D platformers without any motivation to do anything besides collecting stars just feel lifeless to me. That's why I really enjoyed the first Jak and Daxter game (2 was shit, and 3 I never finished), and all the Sly Cooper games. These games had some kind of story, and the characters themselves actually had some personality. Sly in particular reminded me of the Saturday morning cartoons I used to watch in the 90s...

it's a great series and I hope that movie they were making turns out good.

Banjo was always good and so is Yooka-Laylee.

Banjo is a 3D Platformer with a different focus. A focus on exploration. That's all. It's not bad, it's different. I can get why people prefer SM64 over it (heck I prefer SM64 over it) but Banjo Kazooie is alright. It has a lot of things going for it.

Besides I'm pretty sure anyone who has an extremely high preference for SM64, would still prefer 3D platformers like Banjo as opposed to "linear," ones in comparison.
