Is it me, or am I realizing that I'm potentially donating loads of money for a game that, if it even gets made at all, doesn't mean it will be good?

It's like we spent all that effort and waiting and hype for a game that came and went, just like that. Like Mighty Number 9, which played like a particularly bad Megaman game, in a series that isn't consistently good. Or Yooka-Layle, in a series that died for a reason. And even Bloodstained looks to be another Castlevania, in a series that is good, but nothing fantastic.

It's like there's all this hype and it makes you feel like it's a big thing, but come to think of it, most modern AAA titles already do the job better.

It's like throwing money at a dead genre, that died precisely because new games did it better.

Megaman 9 and 10 were received well, Mighty No. 9 is just garbage that looked horribly unfinished. Banjo Kazooie and Tooie were received well, thing is, the devs went over to Microsoft who made them turn a racing game into Nuts & Bolts at the last minute and they have't done anything with the IP since besides cameos and re-releases of the old games. Yooka-Laylee being an effort done by only some of the staff that made the originals, it's like a Beatles reunion today despite 2 of its members being dead.

Most Kickstarters intentionally underproject how much they claim they'll need, knowing backers will be more likely to donate. If they said they'd need a million from the beginning, there would probably be a lot more hesitation from people who like to "wait and see" how much momentum the project actually gets. If you look at how much of the base game's content was locked behind stretch goals (and how much still wasn't fulfilled) you'll definitely see the devs were fully expecting to reach a certain minimum amount over what they claimed.

Personally I think it's mostly to do with bad design. The game is decent but a lot of it's features are hampered by the bad level layouts and balancing.

It was a mediocre retread of Tooie that compounded the problems with that game instead of correcting them or even going back to Kazooie.

It lacks the heart of the Banjo games because pretty much everything is a dumb riff on something, it's too meta, even for a Rare game.

The character designs are bad except for Yooka and Capital B.

They created a controversy by pissing off the unduly massive fanbase of a self-hating Arabic immigrant white supremacist to make themselves look good.
