I mean, I went out of my ways to learn Nip primarily for video games, and I'm always willing to call shit localizations what they are, but it's really not an excuse, it's just sensible advice. There will always be a problem with localizations, so the best way to avoid that is to just learn Japanese and play them in Japanese. I don't really think comparing interpreting a language to someone applying electrical knowledge is quite valid.

I completely agree with that. Learning Japanese is a great way to avoid all the bullshit, but there isn't anything wrong with calling out shit localizations either.

I'd also like to add that it's not always the translator's fault, since the localizers are usually not the translators, I think. At least in video games and anime.

I learned Nip years ago and still point the finger at shitty localizations, and have given my thoughts to some of the people actually in the industry before. I'm a translator who has argued with his bosses over censorship in the past and have gotten them to stop being retarded (temporarily, anyway). Yet there being problems with localizations (and I'm not just talking about censorship and mistranslations. There are some mistakes that are made because the translators just don't have all the information they need at the time. It's shit, but it happens) remains a fact of life, and I am not leaving you to suffer because I point that fact out.

I'm not even sure what point you're trying to make about book and art translations, it seems completely random. I never supported random renaming of characters or anything.
