What are some decent visual novels that don't have sex scenes in them?
Bonus points for things that are in English without patching or mods.
Yes, I am aware you can avoid the smut. I just want to find more "clean" options. Adult themes are OK, just no sex scenes please.
> Ones I have played
> Va-11 Hall-A
Bartending simulator. Some adult situations (ex: one of your clients is a prostitute and another has alcoholism) but no actual porn.
> Hatuful Boyfriend
Pigeons! Ok, this thing is actually science fiction with straight up horror on some paths, but still no porn for obvious reasons.
> I haven't played but have heard of...
Doko he iku no, ano hi
Ever17: The Out of Infinity
Remember11
Umineko no Naku Koro ni
>>376348335
>Hatuful Boyfriend
>no porn for obvious reasons.
It's Japan, there are no obvious reasons.
>>376348335
House in Fata Morgana is a pretty solid gothic romance/tragedy VN
Nice soundtrack too
>>376348335
I just finished VA-11 HALL-A and while it was good, thought-provoking, and emotionally moving with a good message it really left me unfulfilled because I never got theDorothy sex sceneI didn't know I wanted when I started the game
Akai Ito and Aoishiro are shining examples. Great production values, branching story, great music.
>>376348335
Ever17 is definitely amazingif you can suffer through the boring middle section
Also look into the Zero Escape trilogy.
DanganRonpa
The Silver Case
>>376348636
Rule 34 makes porn out of everything. No exceptions. In-game the reasoning for lack of sex scnes is obvious: they're birds and you are a female human. It doesn't work that way.
Now, the reason it's a pigeonpost-apocalypseis harder to fathom. I know, I knowbird flubut still... pigeons... so silly!
World End Economica
written by Spice & Wolf Author, its fucking good
I'm reading Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni right now and it's entertaining, if a little slow to start. Has anyone here read all fourteen arcs? Is it worth it?
>>376349350
how's the remake compared to the original?
>>376349635
>14
Only the 8 main ones are worth reading
>>376349635
Don't expect the other arcs to play out like the first. They're much more different.
>>376349407
>they're birds and you are a female human. It doesn't work that way.
It's Japan.
>>376348335
There are shit tons of otome games on the ps vita.
>>376349661
Way better since you can understand what the characters are saying although there's one instance of the old pic being better and actual framerate when walking around. I'm trying to find the original PS1/comparison
Steins;Gate is one of my favorite works of fiction. Haven't played thekind ofsequel, Steins;Gate 0 though, so I can't speak for that.

Narcissu then growing a pair and getting into VNs proper.
Look at 999 and that series, especially if you liked Ever17 or Remember11.
After that I don't think higurashi has porn, just tons of violence and horrible art with a fun story. There is some unspoken rule that vlVNs with time travel make them better than usual.
Check out nonporn tags on vndb, then when you can stomach porn I subject the utsuge genre.

VA-11 Hall-A? There's no demo so you're best off stalking Gog.com where you can find it on sale sometimes. If you're really broke get a friend to split the cost: Gog doesn't use DRM so you can share a game with friends. No crap like Steam revoking keys.
I know Hatuful Boyfriend has a demo. It's also on sale at Gog a lot more often than Va-ll Hall-A. I got my copy for less than five bucks.
Anyway, demo link: http://clione.halfmoon.jp/hatoful-boyfriend/english.html
>>376354387
>waiting for a sale for a $15 game
lol
If $15 is too much for someone they should just pirate.
Does any of this weeb garbage reach the fun and creativity of the original Phoenix Wright games?
>>376354387
There is a demo and a free prologue that were remade in main game
Great games that are basically VN:
Hotel Dusk
Phoenix Wright Trilogy
Actual VN:
Zero Escape series (999; Virtue's Last Reward; and Zero Time Dilemma)
Umineko
Time Hollow
>>376354498
I like to encourage people to actually buy things to support smaller creators. Yes, the debate rages on piracy but that's how I feel. Besides, sharing games with friends is fun! You can talk about the game and help each other out if you get stuck. Gaming is more fun with friends.
>>376354556
Well, derp. I couldn't find the link. Link?
>>376354516
You know Phoenix Wright was also made in Japan..... right?
>>376354914
I agree about supporting developers, my point is $15 is so little it's silly to wait for a sale.
>>376355106
Answer the question, weeb.
Are there VNs that go beyond waifu simulator + abrupt gore
>>376355106
You don't understand.

Weebs are my enemies, weebshit is satan with pantsu, are you saying that I like satan and make love with my enemies, weebshit?
>>376354914
apparently the download links have disappeared from the internet
>>376355651

>>376355947
Yeah... maybe the demo is still on torrent somewhere? Still, it's a pretty decent game for $15 (or less on sale).
Steins;Gate and S;G 0 are great
>>376356272
>, it's a pretty decent game for $15
It's fucking good for 15$.
>>376348335
Zero Escape series is basically half VN half puzzle. Same thing with Ace Attorney, and to a lesser extent Danganronpa.
Umineko is good but REALLY fucking long. Eight parts and they're what, ~20 hours each? I didn't exactly keep track. Just know that it's an ordeal.
>>376356746
>Danganronpa
Which Danganronpa is the best?

Nah, in order would be best. I say unpopular opinion because most people like 2 over 1 but I still prefer the first one.

>>376356338
I've never really cared for Steins;Gate, its a good enough VN but it takes ages to really ramp up into what the game is known for.
I would argue that Telltale games are technically visual novels.
Holy shit this thread. /v/'s taste is pathetic. It better not be the same posters complaining about low effort Japanese-style games while buying this trash.
If you like Phoenix Wright, I'm sure you'll like this.
>>376359957
I enjoyed the slice of life and characters in the beginning

>>376359957
I'm on like chapter 5 now and even if it's slow the character interactions are still fun. Seeing the different ways people respond to Okarin is pretty great.
>>376360029
It's funny but they don't have enough game in them to be considered fully fledged visual novels. A trait of VNs is branching paths based on your choices through the game. Telltale games are like bad kinetic VNs that try to pretend they have choices but the actual consequences are largely cosmetic and there's a single fixed path regardless of what you do.
>>376348335
Root double, shocked no one has mentioned it
>>376348335

>>376364536
Is this a joke about hand holding or are you misinformed?
>>376364412
For me it was the characters.
>>376364412
Characterization.
Each character is based loosely on a copywritten character. For example: Dorothy the robot = Dorothy Wrainwright from The Big 0. Now, they took that character and spun it around until it's it's own entity but knowing the originals makes it somehow more interesting and complex.
Even if you don't recognize where a character comes from. they are still engaging and relatable. You'll find someone you like before the end. You can count on it.
>>376364602
Misinformed I guess? Clannad keeps coming up as "adult content" (aka "has sex scenes") on most lists I have seen.

>>376360398
Why are kinetic novels not visual novels? The /vg/ recommendations thread includes a bunch of kinetic/non-choice VNs. Hell, Phoenix Wright only has a strict linear path outside of fail states. Wolf Among Us hits that same criteria.

I think I'm about halfway through it, and man, Root B is just exhausting. I feel like I'm kind of understanding where the game's going, and I don't know if I'm gonna be interested enough to finish it. Playing too many games concurrently.
>>376365538
>Why are kinetic novels not visual novels?
Kinetic VNs are kinetic VNs. Non-kinetic VNs are just VNs. Not sure what the confusion is here.
>Phoenix Wright
Is actually an adventure game, and follows the same general game flow as the average western adventure game. You have one path, but in order to progress you need to speak to the right people, click on the right pixel to get the right item and show it to the right person or use it at the right place.
>>376365628
Ahh, so misinformed. Gotcha!
>>376365902
I think it's that people ignore kinietic VNs saying they aren't VNs at all despite the fact that it's right there in the name. Yeah, some of them are adventure games in disguise (ex: Tales from the Borderlands) but others aren't.
Are there any good kinetic VNs not made by telltale, BTW? Clean ones because the the thread says so.

It's a decent visual novel with a top tier rhythm mini game. A few songs that are all great. I go back every now and then just to play the minigame. Really recommend

If you get past the "no sex" thing, you should really get Swan Song.
There's sex, but it's a story you should read.

This was my first recommendation until he said no sex. It's a fucking gem, it might be a bit wordy for some people in the sense there are very few pics and often entire pages of dialogue but god damn is it good. The regular ending is better than the true ending though, fuck that everyone has to be happy shit.
