Unpopular opinion: HL2 is shit. It has very few enemies, which are the same across all levels. Its main draw is its engine first and story second instead of gameplay, which THE defining sign of a shit game. It has levels which are just long rides where nothing even happens. The characters are obnoxious, the story is horrible, and the gameplay is meh, even for an FPS.

>Chances are that HL3's story was probably already loosely put together. If you aren't a completely incompetent writer you know what is going to happen in a sequel.

You have it in reverse actually.

Writing a concept is the easiest part of the job. Making sure it adheres to all the lore, that you can write something engaging yet to the point, that can it be properly conveyed technically in-game and adjusting your story as the game evolves and environments materialize...That's the fucking real job.

Writing is a lot like your baby, you wouldn't leave it half finished. The fact is these games are long dead and this is the best evidence you could possibly ask for.

Both HL and HL2 aren't that great, they mostly got praise for being damn good for the time.

HL was amazing when it came out, with non-stop action and great AI. These days we know it's just one corridor after another and the AI can be beaten silly just by rushing at it. HL2 wowed people with the physics system and gravity gun, but these days it just feels generic as fuck.

As FPS games, both had major level design flaws that really dragged the game down. On A Rail in HL1 still makes some gamers want to vomit with rage to this day. And while somewhat fun the first time, who wants to play through the boat segment of HL2 again? Then there's Waste Disposal in HL1. Having to drive that buggy all across the world in HL2. Xen. The Citadel.

In retrospect, both games were 50% annoying bullshit sections and 50% enjoyable FPS action. Huh.
>>
>>376361376
What's a great FPS, in your mind?
>>
>>376361376
Yeah and in Super Mario you run to the right and win. And in Demon's Souls you run and don't die and win. And in Persona 5 you just press some buttons and win. Not at all impressive.

You can't reduce a game to it's bare bones and say "yeah it's bad in hindsight it doesn't deserve any praise anymore" you fucking idiot.
>>
>>376353710
>Writing is a lot like your baby, you wouldn't leave it half finished.
That explains why Tim Buckley is such a bad writer.
>>
>>376361621
I like both games, calm your tits.

>>376361554
Not much really. A few different enemies, a selection of weapons, and above all else, GOOD level design. That's one of the things about HL1 that makes me so sad. They can have great areas like Office Complex, or Forget About Freeman, but it also has crap like On A Rail, or Xen.
>>
>>376361376
>Both HL and HL2 aren't that great, they mostly got praise for being damn good for the time.
This is correct.

I didn't play the episodes but the series did deserve an ep3 as some kind of conclusion though.
>>
>>376361621
>You can't reduce a game to it's bare bones and say "yeah it's bad in hindsight it doesn't deserve any praise anymore"
He didn't. And even if he did, we can do it with other media such as movies and tv shows. Why should video games be exempt from critical retrospect?
>>
>>376362094
I mean, what game would you consider to be a great FPS?
>>
>>376362210
Oh, sorry. Misread. Unreal Tournament 1999 GOTY was pretty damn good. STALKER SoC and CoP are both pretty damn good. I'd bother naming some more, but I'm getting off work and gotta run to catch my bus.
>>
Half life was always a glorified tech demo, HL3 will come out when valve has new tech.
>>
>>376361621
Nigga, please. Half-life in its bare bones is game that hasunskippable in-game cutscenes involving barely interactive walking sequences and some levels that drag on for way too long. People don't like them in modern games and people didn't like them in older games. Half-life is no exception.

Both Marc Laidlaw and Erik Wolpaw left valve recently, safe to say no narrative drive game is being made.
Hell, even the Left 4 Dead 3 project seems to be dead as its been years since we heard anything about it.

Making games is hard and Valve makes fucktons of money from Steam. Half Life is dead.

>After the mess that was Half Life 2, I wouldn't mind some fresh writing talent to be honest.
Honestly this.
A sequel to a horror game that has barely anything in common with the prequel which starts after a time skip and end on a cliffhanger, twice, resolving shit all and explain shit anything.
Erik Wolpaw was the only real competent writer at valve, and even he became a victim of its god awful production cycle and even he didnt menage to clean up the mess hl2 lore and plot was.

HL3 will never be released.

Gabe has said, among others, several times that there is no drive within the company to make HL3. They have tried, MANY times to do it and it burns out. SInce people can leave projects on a whim, they get bored of making it and the project disolves.

No interest, no good game, Gabe cans attempt.
>>
>>376384120
If nobody has drive to make games, then what games are valve working on? Transitioning from new games to upkeeping their multiplayer games would make sense were it not for TF2 still having a skeleton crew.
>>
>>376384341
DOTA 2, CSGO and 3 VR games which are supposedly going to be proper full length games instead of this 30 minute experiment shit. And yeah technically TF2 but obviously, 14 people doesn't account for much even in a small company (in terms of number of employees) like valve.
>>
>>376384341
Aside from milking Dota and CSGO dry, they're working on three new games

All of which are VR
