I don't know what you mean by profound. It's a stylish action game and one of the best of its kind, the combat has incredible and unique depth and it's really satisfying and challenging. If you're expecting anything else, you're playing the wrong game.

I suppose one of its failings is not spelling out fundamental parts of gameplay, but at the same time you can find it just by messing around. Well up-dodge is straight forwward, the only tricky part is deducing whether to up-dodge, sidestep or backflip in any given situation.

sure, but you usually get either upper body or lower body invincibility.
the dodging doesn't avoid low kicks while jumping or backflipping doesn't avoid high kicks.

there are some fun moves where gene ducks to punch/kick so you can actually use a move to dodge and attack.
same with some jumping kicks.
