Start with DoW Dark Crusade or Soulstorm. Move onto Dawn of War 2: Retribution.

The rest are good but only if you're interested in the story.

Yes, it does. It looks very distinct and has very good game-play. For one thing, the game-play you're going to get out of DoW 1 you'll never get from DoW 2 or DoW3.

DoW1 then winter assault, dark crusade/soulstorm are fun but follow a more "risk" campaign rather than a story driven one, you can play any of the races there though, then play DoW2 vanilla and chaos rising, you can skip retribution it has the weakest story.

Battlefleet gothic armada is great as well and if you are looking for a non RTS game I'd recommend Space Marine as well.

Space Marine is nice, kinda generic but it does the job well at what you want from it.

I don't feel dow3 is bad but not worth it's price that's for sure, just play it safe, wait for inevitable sale and expansion(s).
