Straightforward mechanics, yes. No aggravating faults? No. The writing is painful in how characters have incredibly jarring shifts in how functional they are with indepentant individual development and story development. Characters start to get over their faults and learn to talk through problems rather than bottling/minimizing/venting on others etc depending on the character.... and then go ahead and do exactly that when the main story demands it as if there was no point to tuning ever. Is yours? How is it an SRPG at all? Because battles take place on a grid? That's not how it works, you dumb shit. Trails in the Sky isn't an SRPG either.
Trillion's gameplay has 3 basic parts to it. The first is the raising part, and this is what you spend around 80% of your game time doing. You raise your girl by picking various tasks for them to do to raise their stats and you view event scenes related to them, similar to raising sims like Princess Maker. The second part is the dungeon crawling, which I say generously because there's literally one map and all you do is run through procedural variations of it that are extremely simplistic. The final part is the Trillion battle, which is the only other map where you fight the only boss on it. And both of those combat parts only have you ever using one character at once.

There is absolutely nothing about Trillion's gameplay that makes it an SRPG at all.

No, it really isn't. That you actually think that means that you clearly don't watch all that much anime. For example, this season we have SIN Nanatsu no Taizai and Sekai no Yami Zukan with different levels of crappy voice acting. Over the last years we've also had Spiritpact, Tiger Mask W, and Hitori no Shita with mediocre voice acting. An older example that comes to mind is Kitakubu Katsudou Kiroku, which had a bunch of newbie actors cast in it.
You can't appreciate good Japanese voice acting until you've heard crappy Japanese voice acting, and you clearly haven't.

The other part of the game flow is that each chapter you pick one girl to send against Trillion who you focus on for that chapter, then when they inevitably die the next girl inherits their stats to become stronger, until you eventually beat it. The problems with Trillion largely arise from how incredibly budget it is, even by Compile Heart's incredibly low standards. The artwork is "I can't believe it's not Harada!", there are only a handful of training events and after ten minutes with each girl you'll have seen them all and spend the rest of the time just repeating them constantly. The dungeon crawling is boring as fuck since it's so incredibly shallow as the combat system was made entirely to focus on Trillion, and the battles with Trillion are annoying as fuck because you spend most of the time watching his unskippable animations.
The story really should have shined with the whole sacrifice premise, but they were lazy about that too. The game splits you into phases, where in each phase you can pick from one of a few girls. So phase one you pick from girls A, B, and C, and phase two you pick from D and E, and so on. Despite this limitation on who can be sacrificed in each phase, they still couldn't be bothered having the game actually take that into account and have different scenes for it in each case, and instead you just get generic "oh no, our comrade is dead" and "we will never forget our comrade who we won't refer to by name" scenes, regardless of who is killed off, and it's only as the phase changes that they remember who died last time. The whole game is just incredibly lazy in all elements of its design and it ruins the potential of the premise entirely.
