And the mobage is currently the big genre at the moment. It's the Pokemon Go, Fire Emblem Heroes, Granblue Fantasy, and so on. They're the micro mobile games which have you play a bit every day, and which offer you to pay to get more collectables. Expect Fate/Grand Order to be the next big one, what with a story attached to the whole thing.

Homeless simulators where you're actually a homeless person that has to either go beg for food (to survive) or you fight other bums for their cash and food.

Games where you're in a medieval setting and the world functions somewhat like EVE Online, where you can contribute in some way to establishing dominion and civilization, can choose factions of different positions like vikings, laplanders, cavemen, picts, visigoths, franks, huns, etc.

But that's just me wishing for a game that will never exist.

I'm not sure they were every really that popular, outside the 10-year-old kids who just wanted a free or dirt-cheap game to play on Steam. I can talk with people who regularly played MMOs, ASSFAGGOTS, and mobage games. I can't find people who regularly sat down to play DayZ or whatever other Minecraft zombie knockoff is currently popular.

You know, I don't think there will be another "big" popular new genre. The vidya industry is bigger than its ever been, and playing vidya has been normalized than its ever been. So the market is diverse enough to support walking simulators, fps, mobas, etc.

However I think that if anyone can make a genuinely 10/10 mobile game, then the market will get pulled even more in that direction.
