Unless you learned Japanese from birth, you're not getting the full meaning anyway. Learning it later in life through the lens of English distorts it.

When it comes to having proficiency in Japanese language, there are two types of people: 1) Native born Japanese people, 2) Liars.

The more Japanese I study, the less it feels like I truly know.

I've been slamming Kanji in anki for about 2 months but seeing a lot of overlap in the structure of some kanji I feel like I shouldn't have taken the advice of a certain thread that's been split up over boards now and just have learned radicals

Man if you are at the point you already did all your mining deck and to do new words you actually have to mine them right away, then I'd assume it would be hard to find 20 new words a day.

Also, what manga are you reading? What VN?

Currently my mining deck is sitting at 3k mined and about 500 done, not sure how many mature but I'd guess less than 100.

Not true. Japs go absolutely fan girl mode when a Westerner is even know a little bit of Japanese. It's almost like they're happy that a barbarian has accepted how superior their language is.

On the other hand when I ran into a fellow American in Osaka, our English interaction actually drew a large number of onlookers.

Normally when I can't follow in Japanese, I have to speak slowly and with proper English for Japs. When I spoke normally with another American, apparently that was ALSO the coolest thing ever, and some girls were applauding after our conversation was over.... and then proceeded in wanting to have their pictures with like I was a novelty.

I can never tell if Japs think I'm cool or just a gross animal they wish to brag that they met.

The family I stayed with apparently loved me. The mother kept trying to set me up with her daughter.

They're separate tests. N5 is the easiest, N1 the hardest. You choose which test you want to take beforehand. Only N1 matters as far as actually working or doing anything Japan is concerned (f.ex. immigration agency gives you bonus points if you've cleared N1), though some unis taking exchange students set the bar lower and only except N2.

Nevertheless you should only ever take N1 if you plan on taking any of them. Others are basically an easy way to scam idiots out of their money so they get a good looking poster on their wall for knowing some basic Japanese.

As far as the tests themselves are concerned, they're actually pretty easy. Multiple choice questions only (though there's tons of them), mostly relating to understanding shit. This means it doesn't really gauge your production skills (speaking and writing), f.ex. I'm really shit at producing anything but I'm really proficient at reading, because I learned Japanese for video games. In fact there's many vidya and eroge that are much harder than N1 level shit.

N1 has three parts: grammar and readings + learning comprehension + listening comprehension. Every part has 60 point max, for a total of 180 points. Passing grade requires merely 19 points in each section, plus 100 points total.

Right now im reading イカ娘 manga and finished one route of flyable heart, halfway through another girls one. At the start it was rough but its getting much, much faster to read it unless I hit an unknown word.

I started learning japanese like 2 months and 2 weeks ago, so far i've learn hiragana, katakana, some grammar stuff, some vocabulary and something like 285 kanjis with some associated vocabulary (of course i don't know them absolutely perfectly, there's a lot of holes here and there that i gotta fill progressively.)

I've decided to take a kanji break to learn more grammar and learn to really get a grasp at those i already know, but i just ended up doing almost nothing for the last 2 weeks. Now when i'm procrastinating for everything, even for my univerity homework, i end up spending my days in front of my computer.

I need help please, i'm putting myself in desperate situations almost on purpose. Help me

Exactly. N1 just means you got the basic shit down (whereas lower levels are sub-basic shit) and can understand when spoken to and can read most daily life stuff you come across, but if you actually want it to grant you actual benefits in working life and such you also need to get good scores, and obviously need to trim up your production skills as well.

I myself took the test a few years ago and got nearly full points from learning comprehension, but less than optimal scores for other sections and still passed. N1 is more of a starting point than the goal like some beginners glorify it as. Though clearing N1 means you most likely have no issues consuming native media like vidya and other weebshit, which I wager is the main reason people decide to learn Japanese.

I was motivated to learn English mainly because of video games, and learned Japanese for the same reason.

I mean if you want to talk about actually "worthwhile" languages to learn, you only have
>Your mother tongue / the language that's used most in the country you live in
>English due to its global status in the civilized world
and that's pretty much it. Learning any other language whatsoever is inherently "worthless" and dependent entirely on your personal interests, or what type of work you plan on doing in the future.

You're a braindead cunt who is mistaking "more time wasted" for "better understanding". Recognition and reproduction are completely different skills using completely different areas of the brain, which is why you can write a word and know it looks "wrong" without knowing the right way to spell it.

You're taking way too long, you can always come back and learn autism order later if you seriously want to take the fucking Kanken.

Bilingual growing up, I actually used to have a really hard time translating between german and english - even though I spoke and understood both fluently. Like my brain didn't have the necessary connections in my head between the two languages.

I got better at it by practicing and thanks to english classes at school, so I no longer have that much of a problem these days - but it's still funny when my peers can find translations of words faster than me despite english being a foreign language to them, simply because they've actually “learned” it, whereas I grew up with it.

No.
I learned Japanese because I wanted to travel the country and actually be able to talk to people there, and also because I wanted to be able to read Japanese literature, which is often very tricky to translate, and many great books aren't translated at all.

That said, I failed on the second goal, because learning Japanese on a literary level turned out to incomparably harder than just learning enough to be able to converse or read light reading, and I eventually did not have enough time and will to invest.

I'm a massive weeboo, but I never gave two flying shits about Japanese games. Still don't. I enjoy some manga, very rarely anime, a lot of their cinema and A LOT of their books, but their games never fucking interested me, sans few very rare exceptions (Team Ico games, Silent Hill - nothing that would require you to know Japanese).

Japanese is generally really not worth learning unless you have an academic interest in their culture.

>>376311185
>When it comes to having proficiency in Japanese language, there are two types of people: 1) Native born Japanese people, 2) Liars.
Not true. It's hard, but it's not nearly impossible. Like every language, learning it in nuanced form is hard and generally requires to live there for a while, but it's nowhere near impossible. Most people I've seen claiming that they know Japanese did hugely overplay their proficiency (I guess it's kinda like people bragging about their IQ), but still, you are taking it too far in the opposite direction.

Piano. It's gonna take most time, but it's likely going to be most rewarding and certainly gets you highest score with the girls.

Drawing is nice if you really have creative urges, but it's a lot less time dependent and you can always go back to it later, which can't be said about piano.

Japanese is generally useless unless you have any kind of Japan-related academic or business plans that you seriously wish to go through.

It's context sensitive. If you are young and surrounded by young people, they might find it weirdly formal. But then again, in some cases they will find "boku" too childish, in other cases they will find "ore" too harsh and arrogant, so... really you would have to spend more time with them, see what the norm for that particular social group is.

Watashi is - at worst - a bit too formal, but never actually inappropriate. You'll never offend anyone with it. So if you are unsure of what the norm of that group is, just use that, unless somebody advices you to do otherwise for that particular context.

Speaking from experience (I know multiple languages), the ONLY contributing factor to how well you can learn a language in practice is your motivation. If you want to learn something, you will. If you don't, you won't. This is especially true for languages, because learning a language is equal to having motivation over a long period of time.

The moment you lose motivation, you stop learning. If you were “forced” to learn spanish at school like I was “forced” to learn french, you won't learn it at all. But if you learn something because you WANT to learn it, it will be easy.

Also, the most important step in language learning is practicing it. Find somebody who speaks that language and is willing to help you learn, and actually try conversing with them in that language from that point onwards. If you don't know something, ask or look it up. And have them point out your mistakes. If you know somebody like that and regularly practice with them, you will become fluent in no time. You won't learn a language by just reading textbooks about it.

I barely passed compulsory Swedish classes in high school and university, but learned both English and Japanese. Learning a language, or anything else for that matter is only about how motivated you are. Internet is full of learning material and guides so you have no excuses unless you're diagnosed with an actual physical or mental disability.

Don't be these faggots
>I wasn't good at drawing as a kid so I can never learn to draw!
>I'm just born fat and can't help that I'm overweight!
>I'm too stupid to learn mathematics!
>I can't learn any foreign languages!
These are people who only trick themselves into thinking they're inherently stupid or bad at something, because it's much, much easier for people to accept that they just "don't have what it takes" on genetic or some other level that they can't personally influence rather than accept the fact that they're pathetic losers because of their own laziness.

>I think getting good at drawing really is harder that getting good at piano and music.
Speaking from experience, it's not. The entry barrier into most musical instruments is far, far worse than for drawing. Especially piano, which is hard even by average musical instrument standards. It does, of course, depeneds also on one's innate talents (Some people will find music easier than others), but even the clumsiest person can learn to draw technically decent pictures with a hour of training a day, or maybe just going to a drawing lesson once a week. I'm not only not very gifted at drawing, I also suffer some mild neurological problems affecting eye-to-hand coordination, meaning that I can't draw a straight line to save my life, and I've still learned technically solid basics of illustration, by my own, within a couple of months.

Now find me a someone who can claim the same for piano. You'll need to practice tens of hours a week for several years, even if you have a good predisposition. It just requires far more delicate manual training and muscle memory.

I guess I would not use "Watashi" on 2chan, but outside of that, I personally always go for "Watashi" if I'm in any kind of doubt. Again: people might find it awkward at absolute worst, but you are guaranteed that they won't find it rude. Eventually you might get a bit more of an intuition for these kinds of things, but until that, really, just stick to Watashi.

And again, it might be context sensitive, and this probably does not apply for image boards or on-line multiplayer, but in a lot of online correspondence, Japs tend to still revert to what are the standards for actual correspondence, which means kicking up the politeness factor one notch up. In other words, in things like semi-business emails, you will frequently find them even addressing others as "sama" or using "watakushi" or "uchi" towards themselves.

>Depends what you call decent.
Not a complete eyesore.

By the way, again: Off-key tones are far more intruisive and jarring than almost anything you can fuck-up when drawing, which means that every single mistake you'll make while playing the piano will be immediately more noticeable, and will create even higher pressure and need for practice. While an illustrator can get away with a lot if he is not trying to present himself as professional, a piano playing person won't: people will forgive you awkwardly drawn hand on your character, but if you are playing off tune on piano, they will probably beat your ass after of few seconds having to listen to that.

Any games that haven't been released in English, that I'm also interested in, can be played without any difficulties if you just bother figuring out the menus and what not. Some games like shmups require even less than that.

Heck it even works with “again”, just adapt it to something like “using this you can ejaculate into tissues again and again”.

Well, yeah pronouns are generally omitted in Japanese (or replaced with any other possible noun), that is in no way special for watashi or any other one. It has fuck all to do with gender here though - male or female, you generally don't use pronouns if you can avoid it: overuse of pronouns looks childish or weirdly affectionate. It applies equally to women and men, and to all possible pronouns, first, second or third person alike.
There is nothing gay about using Watashi, 90% of Japanese mature men use that and only that outside of company of friends or crime syndicates. What makes you look foolish, regardless of which one you are using, is just that you are using it too often, when most of the time it could be omitted.
>>
>>376320592
Yeah, to me kanji is a pre-requisite to learning the vocab proper. Like learning the letters before you learn the language, y'know? I'm actually going through two anki decks at the same time right now, one for the vocabulary (kunyomi <-> meaning, jukugo <-> meaning) and one for the kanji itself (kanjidamage).

That said, kanjidamage also does a good job of including the various words that use a kanji, it just doesn't explicitly force you to learn them. What I sort of miss in other decks is the way kanjidamage will explain to you what words mean to actual people, rather than just what the dictionary says; and stuff like what words could be offensive or start a fight if you say them at the wrong time.
>>

DJT and fags on anonymous anime picture forums will tell you that it's a waste of time, but seriously, do Remembering the Kanji (RTK) or some equivalent method. If you do 25 new cards per day (should be less than an hour per day) you will be done in 3 months.

If you can, find a deck that provides example words that use the kanji, so that you won't end up mixing up stuff like 暖 熱 暑 that have approximately the same meanings.

t. did RTK and have never struggled with or mixed up kanji ever since.

I learned Japanese because I love learning about different cultures as I hope to travel someday.

I speak English, Spanish. A bit of French and Japanese.

I hope to learn more languages soon such as Arabic, Latin, and Italian.

Here's a tip for you guys: If you know English, as well as either Spanish, French, or Italian... You can easily learn another language with Latin roots

My first languages are English and Spanish, learning French was a breeze

I gotta agree with this dude. Spanish is my first tongue, learned Portuguese in over a month, and felt like I wasted my time and potential. If you're interested in becoming a linguaphile, don't learn the same etymology every time. Go for a different script. For every person who wants to learn every Kanji without forgetting anything anymore:

Read and learn the Kanji book of Heisig. He uses short stories to let you never forget a Kanji. If you know how to write Kanji and also learn Japanese a long time, but struggle with Kanji, you are able to remember forever over 2k kanji in under a month with ease.

But:
You need to follow his book. Accept how he wants you to remember Kanji. Don't question his book and don't try to change his stories! Every story is important to imagine as YOUR picture in YOUR head, but DON'T change his story, because you can get problems with Kanji because your story went too far and confuses Kanji.

If you want only a help for "hard" kanji his book isn't for you.

Thanks to Heisig I know every Kanji without even thinking. The story runs instantly in my head and the meaning. Btw. rip the little crying dog in the prison... he still gets raped by the 狼.

And if you don't know, Heisig is using the god tier methode to remember everything. He only uses this method for Kanji. I bet he comes from one of those schools where you learn the best remembering technique of the world.

Heisig even writes in his book that he learned ALL Kanji from zero in under a few months (and with the book you only need weeks).

Btw. Heisig is a Professor and the book isn't a scam or some random money grab. Thanks to this book I learned ALL Kanji perfectly in under three weeks (learning Japanese over 4 years, but had always problems with Kanji, but now I know all... I wasted fucking years of my life for Kanji... I regret not knowing about his book since the beginning T_T)

Nuance difference. What I found by quick google
http://chigai-allguide.com/%E4%B8%8A%E3%82%8B%E3%81%A8%E7%99%BB%E3%82%8B%E3%81%A8%E6%98%87%E3%82%8B/

上る - rise up (normal, general, used widely)
「話題に上る」 - becoming a topic
「食卓に上る」 - served at dining table
「百万人に上る」 - number of people rising up to million
「頭に血が上る」 - get angry, lose your cool (blood rises up to your head)

登る - "intentionally, exerting oneself to rise up to a high place", often used in kanji compound
「山に登る(登山)」 - climb a mountain
「頂上まで登る(登頂)」 - climb to the top
「マウンドに登る(登板)」 - taking the mound
「演壇に登る(登壇)」 - taking the podium

昇る - "rise up high into the air" is the basic nuance
「天に昇る」 - rise up to heaven
「日が昇る」 - sun rises
「煙が昇る」 - smoke rises
「神殿に昇る(昇殿)」 - entry into the sanctum of a shrine or temple; access to the imperial court
「地位が昇る(昇進)」 - PROMOTIONS!
but also more basic stuff like machines, especially as antonym to 「降りる」
「エレベーターで昇る」 - rise up using elevator
「エスカレーターで昇る」 - rise up using escalator

The article also mentions that when in doubt, it's safe to default to hiragana のぼる or kanji 上る. If you're just reading instead of producing yourself it's enough to know that they roughly mean the same thing, same goes for other weird "sameish" kanji you come across, you just keep seeing them used and gradually see a nuance difference pattern, not unlike words in any other language. Note that this was an article aimed at natives.
