It's very "new age difficult" where deaths come fast but you restart at a close checkpoint.
If you don't like that kind of thing then you probably won't like it.

Other than that, the game design is real good.
I especially like how the mandatory stuff is arranged in an easy to follow line with no backtracking and the optional content is all off of branching paths from the main route that aren't really a pain to return to because of fast travel and general ease of access.

Last time I checked people said its great. When I tried it I thought it was garbage, mediocre at best. At least it was cheap.

I don't know, Metroidvania is a pretty hard formula to fuck up. I don't think I've played a legit bad one.

Maybe Outland, because despite the aesthetic and story, nothing happens, all the music is ambient and it ended up boring the shit out of me.

By the way, indie devs. Regular devs. Inbetween devs. Next time you're doing a "dual" mechanic, maybe pass over light/dark or fire/ice. It's been done. You're not going to be the one to do it "right", it's just been done. It's not exciting. Move on to the next duality.

Does it even matter what explanation they choose to contextualize the mechanic? That was the least of Outland's problems. The bigger would be that it implemented it in a really boring shallow way without the good level design and scoring depth that Ikaruga had. Or how it's metroidvania game in the most technical way possible, the only exploration if you can even call it that is for some shitty collectibles.
