Runescape's quests felt like a lot of old point and click adventure games where you had to do puzzles, there was great writing and characters with actually funny writing and because of that Runescape probably has the best quests out of any MMO I've ever played and absolutely blows WoW out of the water.

Runescape was/is the only MMO where the quests actually feel like quests and not menial tasks. They have actual storylines, puzzles and RPG elements (e.g. needing certain skills/items to overcome obstacles) and don't spoonfeed you the objectives.

The problem is the absurdly tedious grinding between the quests.
>>
>>376286030
Yeah, it had surprisingly strong characterization for an MMO too. Some of the lines the player character has is hilarious such as during the My Arm quest where you watch a cutscene of a person being cooked by a troll and you try and pick up the expensive, dragon equipment on the ground. The troll who is telling you the story scolds you and tells you to stop being so distracted.

Talking to random NPCs in Runescape is so great

Andrew Gower:
I wanted to get myself in a position where...I could still...advise Jagex, and still, you know, I loved RuneScape. I absolutely wanted to keep working on it, but I didn't want the responsibility and the stress, um, of being in charge of something so big an so important. So I started looking at selling my remaining stake in Jagex. But it wasn't meant to be a radical shift, it was just meant to be a way I didn't have to be a director of a huge company.

Whilst I'd been quite stressed being in charge, I suddenly realized that, when I wasn't in charge, all of a sudden what I had to say didn't matter so much. And you know, people were doing things not the way I wanted them to do them. And, that was the whole point, of course. The whole point was I didn't want to be responsible, and, uh, you know, I just wanted to be able to advise and help, and...and...and, you know, nurture the game I've made without having to be so responsible. But as soon as that responsibility was taken away, I, I realized...oh dear. Um...you can't have it...you can't have it both ways. Without responsibility, you also don't have the authority. You can't...and...and you know, you can't have one without the other. And by trying to make myself less stressed and reduce the responsibility, I'd also reduced the authority. And all of a sudden I'd found that...you know...uh...I didn't have the final say on things, and other-you know-other people had the final say on things, and...I'd made a mistake, quite frankly. Eventually it just reached the point where I just wasn't doing anything for Jagex anymore. But there was no sort of date where I left. I didn't have a sort of leaving due, or anything like that. It just sort of faded away.

I think I actually left the company...when they, um, started introducing, um...microtransactions to the Wheel of-Squeal of Fortune. Because...one thing which we'd always publicly said to the players was the we wouldn't, um...start, um...(sob?)...selling microtransactions. So...by them doing that, if I was still involved with the company, it sort of felt like that made me into a liar. I sort of said we'd never do that and we did.

A couple of somebodies (with at least one inside man) bought a ton of boots before an update that split the boots into 75k store/45k alch +2 str boots and 12 gp store +0 everything boots, with the reason given that 'rune boots have +2 str too, and they're worth a lot!'
Said somebodies made a lot of gp with little effort, pures and <40/60 defense people got shafted.

Skip to post-EoC and they're still 75k, despite their only stats being 5 defence (fucking nothing), while rune boots are ~7k.

IVPex is a fucking disgrace.

The Chinese investing in Runescape wasn't all bad...

It did cause Jagex to start creating content geared towards the East. So now there is a Katana set, Samurai armor, and a whole region based on Chinese architecture.

Also there is a nine-tailed fox pet. So there's that.

This game was my fucking life when I was younger. It pains me to see where it's headed, but it was bound to happen eventually. Back in '09, they finally caught me for botting like three years before then, and temp banned me. Rolled my stats back, and couldn't bring myself to do it again. So, I stayed in Barrows Brothers. Every day for hours in Clan Chat, made more money than I knew what to do with and started giving barrows armour away for cheap. Runescape is 99% grind. The only parts that aren't are quests which are great (but require you to have grinded your skills to certain points to start) and some actually fun minigames like the PVP CTF game castle wars (which all have their own forms of grind to go with them)

Just find the soundtrack on youtube and listen to that. It'll be faster, easier and work just as well.

Also, Jagex has made a mess of OSRS. It's essentially RS3 with shitty graphics and the old combat system (which you can have in RS3 anyway)

I honestly do think RS3 is better than OSRS. Mechanically. Content-ally. But it's no secret that the game has had to go through its fair share of dark ages and rough patches to come to this point. Sometimes I do resent modern Jagex a little bit for it.

Still, some things are better than they used to be. I legitimately believe this.

~Combat now compared to combat pre-eoc is considerably more entertaining and engaging, and allows for a lot more flexibility than it used to, even if the number rolling of EoC at launch was dogshit. Revolution really does make all the difference here, giving me a good middle-ground between the click-and-wait comfort of old RuneScape, and the more active combat of something like WoW for example. I enjoy how different offhands provide vastly different playstyles (personally I'm quite partial to how flexible defenders make me). I enjoy how I'm constantly adjusting my action bar slightly to make it a bit more efficient for Revolution, or if I want to time something manually.

~There are some genuinely great quests following 2007. That said, I do admittedly believe that they were too eager and too hasty to get into the god stuff following the beginning of the Sixth Age, and lingered in got politics for far too long. Unfortunately there were also some truly terrible quests following 2007. The Mighty Fall being one such example. Oh, Zanik. You didn't deserve that. To have your fate so undermined by events outside of your own quest series. The World Events as a whole were also handled terribly.

~The new skills, Divination and Invention, are good skills. I especially enjoy the precedent Invention sets as an "elite skill". It seems as though it's planned to plug into every other skill in some way or another eventually, and if that is going to be the case, then I eagerly anticipate their next elite skill. I just hope it releases in a more complete state than Invention did.

Oh you poor fucking thing.
Compfags got most of the original plan for invention scrapped initially, some of the shit, like portables, turned into MTX.
Then the remade invention's batch two was cancelled as well for some reason.

I'd like to believe something will be done with it, but I honestly have lost the ability to feel hope.

I don't remember it being canceled. We've got a tonne of new gadgets a few months back, the task system was completely reworked, you could augment more stuff along the line, we've got fucking augmented tinderboxes and... fletching knives, I want to say, though I don't think I've made one yet. Several new perks here and there.

I made tons of invention xp on my way to 99 mining off arc rock crabs because of my augmented crystal pick (I should have waited so I could truly enjoy the Mining Rework when it dropped.)

>>376293426
When World Event 2: Armadyl vs Bandos happened, and Bandos lost, Zanik got fucked in the ass. Hard.

The final quest involving her was a half-assed quest basically just made out of reused assets and combat encounters just so they could finally shelf her and say "Yeeeaaa it's done!"
>>
>>376293426
Bandos possessed her in the chosen commander, then everything was fine for ages.
Then when the guy who made the barrows brothers killed guthix and started the next god wars, and armadyl killed bandos, she started dying because her soul was leaking or something, but the remaining forces of bandos want to hold a tourney for some reason, during the quest you have the choice to kill her or let her live and send her off into the unknown so she might find a way not to die.
At this point she looks like a gypsy prune, one of the worst graphical updates in runegame history.

And then the next quest, which is when they bring nomad back, AGAIN (he gets brought back around 4-5 times, twice in once quest) she turns not ugly but it's a massive fuck you because she died anyway and you couldn't do a thing about it and your choice didn't even matter.
And then at the end, death and the desert dog god let you make her the host of soul wars, as if that solves everything.
>>
>>376292956
Revolution is identical to pre-EoC if the special attack bar filled up faster. You click, wait, and occasionally click a button to do more damage, then go back to waiting. Also, maybe it's just me, but I felt like melee was sucking dick. 99 attack and strength was barely passable as far as killing things went, and being able to kite enemies is essential for some bosses which is just a fantastic mechanic to put in a game with 0.6 seconds of input lag at the least. There's also little reason to adjust your bar once you get the max deeps rotation set up.

Every quest past WGS and The Chosen Commander has been imperfect.

Divination is Fishing 2. Locate and click node, wait to gather resource, click different more noticeable node on occasion. The upside is you never need to bank, with the downside of it being tedious as all hell, which would be fine if they didn't stick it in as a requirement for a couple of quests.

Prif provided everything u culd evr need, making vast amounts of the game world obsolete if you had the skills to take advantage of it, ensuring the server would be dead as fuck outside of prif since everyone and their dog is there.

Haven't done any Arc shit so I can't bitch too much, but it looks like more solo content for max exp gainz. Just remove the in-game chat at this point.

>>376293426
Grafix'd into a horrific abomination, got her shit tied to Bandos the big high jobber god, died (and you can choose to kill her because FUCK EVERYTHING), then came back as a qt for a bit.
>>
I truly hate that dungeoneering is a skill. Truly would have been better as a minigame.

Boring to level up and tedious and i have never leveled it up. It sucks because some good stuff is locked behind tokens
>>
>>376293737
The original invention plans were machines and shit, like construction but useful, as well as incredibly strong custom weapons and shit.
And an actual use for the invention guild besides a neat room.

Invention batch two was supposed to be the high tier content of invention, so actual benefits to leveling up a weapon past twelve, new shit and perks past 99. Was supposed to come out like 2 months after the batch 1.
>>
>>376293737
>>376293426
And her appearance in Nomad's elegy (where you get to meet a lot of dead characters again - yes, she died offscreen no matter what you chose) wasn't any better, either, reduced to a green, pointy-eared anime gnome.

Her goblin heritage was completely lost. And to think I found her somewhat cute pre-rework despite being a blurry jumble of triangles, but a well-written quest like The Chosen Commander will do that for you I suppose.

>>376293887
I can only manage to do it in bursts.

I have always sort of liked it in a... almost Binding of Isaac sort of way. Almost. But it really did get tedious when you were forced to do it for a skill, and there wasn't nearly enough variation between instances to make it truly enjoyable.

I hope they give the skill a hard rework someday, make it feel more like an arcade survival roguelike with getting ridiculous abilities and such as you progress floor by floor until you die.

It feels like that, because there's a lot of shit that doesn't make sense unless it is, like the fuckhuge mutator bar, the fact that it tells you a new objective each floor despite the fact that there's currently only one thing to do, the fact they've introduced a new baddie trying to screw up shit, but they might just forget it exists.
ATM it's very grindy and can take a fair bit of gitgud to do anything at higher tiers.

Don't tell me they got rid of castle wars, that shit was fantastic, I loved how even though it was a combat based minigame you could still contribute if you were low level thanks to shit like barricades and blasting potions. Minigames are just dead as all fuck because no playerbase besides people who want to grind.
Also, on castle wars in particular, the first guy, a massive fucking autist, to get completionist cape convinced jagex to make an insanely ridiculous amount of hours in castle wars a req for the cape.
As a result, when it's not dead, it's filled exclusively with leechers.
>>
>>376295062
Probably more at that no one plays them. There's a requirement for the comp(?) cape where you have to play so many Castle Wars games, so maxedfags just sit around in them for weeks at a time.

>>
>>376295062
Nobody plays them because, between bonus xp and an ever growing number of ways to achieve extremely high xp rate, there's very little value to be found in playing minigames for kind of ass slightly cosmetic gear with shit xp rates, whereas long ago the minigames were valued because xp rates on everything were so shit and leveling was so tedious that the provided a welcome alternative.

Even the Spotlight system that Jagex introduced has only caused more problems, as since it's based on time present, people just afk to get Thaler, which lets them get some rewards from other minigames without having to directly play them.

It's barely better on RS3, only because of the larger amount of quest content does it have more questfags.
Too many people used to shit like wow just spacebar/click through all the quests ignoring everything and using guides.
>>
>>376295696
>osrsfags don't care about quests at all.
Oh, good. I was actually considering checking it out because I imagine Guthix isn't dead anymore over there, but I've been struggling with the knowledge that a lot of the original content it's spawned is of complete dogshit quality (Zeah, Necromancy), but really, spending time among people who don't enjoy Runescape's greatest quality is the final straw. Fuck that, even if it does somehow have a larger playerbase than RS3, I can at least still enjoy what decent lore there is and some quests now and then. If there's something nuJagex doesn't fuck up TOO bad, it's that.

Literally why fucking play RuneScape if you're not going to play for the quests? I mean admittedly the merchanteering aspect and being able to skill in things that aren't strictly combat are both appealing, but the grand exchange really fucks any kind of deep merchanteering aspect in the ass and generally speaking skills are kind of grindy.
>>
I really dislike the new quests in RS3. The shift of an every day adventure to a diety slaying World Guardian really fucked everything.

That is to say, if their Menaphos dev diaries are to be trusted in the slightest.

Some time ago, I wrote up a suggestion on how to rework Runecrafting because the idea of using a minigame to train it without touching the skill proper is fucking offensive to me. The general idea was that you could tie the elemental altar dimensions proper to the Rune Essence Mine via the Abyss (after a world event involving fighting off the abyss that invades by tracing people through their use of teleportation spells and ending in striking a deal with the cthonian demons).

There would be two primary ways of training. One would have you sacrificing a portion of runes you gain to have the travel through the abyss shortened so you could focus on PURE EFFICIENT XP, and the other would have you keeping the runes but having to take a longer path to go back and forth between the essence mine and the altars.

The Great Orb Project would play into this by offering you various benefits for while you're training runecrafting. Obviously there'd be the teletabs, but also there'd be buffs you could buy that affect rune gain multipliers or abyss cost reduction for a limited time, as well as the runecrafting clothes having an actual benefit for runecrafting.
