Oh, are you the guy from a few days ago ? The beggining are always a bit rought since you don't have many skills at your disposition. The game'll become easier and easier.

Don't hesitate to use skills on normal encounters. Even if you don't reach a shortcut before retreating you'll still gain exp and moneys.
