In SM64, upon visiting Jolly Roger's Bay for the first time, there's a thin layer of mist coating the ground and the water, but after getting the first star, it vanishes permanently. One of the levels (Jolly Roger, i think) has a chunk of terrain rendered outside the 'playable' area, being the only level that does this in the whole game.
