The gameplay mechanics aren't rich enough to stay interesting throughout the game but they are decent enough to not get completely annoyed by them.

That's what I was thinking too. There are a bunch of Symphonia references in the game. Way more for Symphonia than any other game.

The expeditions have tons of Symphonia references about Symphonia's events either from the areas you travel to or the items you get from there. The characters also talk about Symphonia's story and describe it as if it was history and had happened in the past. Plus there are some casual namedrops of the Symphonia characters like Sheena, Colette, Martel, Ygddrasil, Mithos, and a couple of others I'm missing too.

The combat is pretty button mashy, the story and plot twist are easy to see coming and you pretty much know what 60% of the MC's motivation is as she screams it out through the game repeatedly.

In my opinion it would have ironed out quite a few story problems and would have allowed the game to avoid controversy.

If Mikleo was a girl from the start, even if they kept Alisha and still pushed her, the moment we found out about Mikleo or even just booted up the game, you'd know who the real heroine was.

There's also the fact that because Sorey's goal is centered around Mikleo, and is a character that has a big impact on the story, allowing Mikleo to both be a girl would make her the heroine and there would give more time to explore Sorey's character and goals.

Combat at the start is completely bare bones because you unlock more moves from Revelations, trainers, and so on as the game goes on. Yakuza 0 also has four distinct attack styles each with their own moves so it's the most fleshed out fighting system in the entire series. Looking at only the first 10 minutes is idiotic, but it's especially stupid because you're discrediting it completely based on one manner of the game when 70% of your playtime will be minigames and substories, not really the fighting.

Keep in mind that judging any Yakuza game based on the first 10 minutes is like judging something like Devil May Cry before you get any new weapons, or writing off an RPG within the first 10 minutes because you could just mash attack to beat an enemy right outside the main town.

I've tried many tales games, but Berseria was the only one I ever finished. Very fun cast of characters. Something a lot of RPGs can't do well nowadays.

I went and bought Zestria to catch up on the overarching story. 9 hours in and I can see why its not liked. Personally combat camera is utter shit and a big turnoff. I've grown to like Sorey and Mikleo, however if it weren't for the knowledge I know from Berseria I would've dropped this game by now.

Sorey needed to have more stand out moments in the game as well as a moment to show that he has a good point as well, it's just that it's not the new all end all. Besides that he's fine. Rose they needed to admit while she also has a good point, there is a serious hole in her logic, and it needed to be addressed. I think that the manga handled it best. Having her actually realize the hole in her logic from Cardinal Forton's situation and acknowledging that Lunarre has a point when he called her out, and taking it to heart. Just as she effects Sorey, Sorey needed to effect her.

Alisha to honest it makes sense that she isn't around to often, the story is about Sorey's journey and Alisha's story really doesn't have much to do with it. Alisha's problem is somethibg that traveling with Sorey could help with. She is by definition a side character, there's really no reason for her to have a lot screen time because she actually doesn't add much to b the story. The game's real failure with her is it's failure in conveying her flaws and the truth about her situation. Actually hearing about what was stated about her in her own manga and by the staff, I don't feel sorry for game Alisha anymore. But she's really just a side character character.
